PS2/Xbox at $100. When? (never?)

$100 bucks is all I'm willing to spend on the cost of a game console. Gaming has fallen way down on my list of priorities at this point in my life. It's worth that much to me, and not a penny more. I bought a Gamecube when it hit $100, and I will re-buy a PS2 and possibly an Xbox when they hit this price as well.

Trouble is, looking at the past for insight, at this point in the PS One's life it had hit $100 with a new hardware revision, and the PS2 had just come out. Will the PS2 ever drop to $100 now? With Microsoft keeping the price of the Xbox at $150 even after its successor has been released, and with the "value" addition of DVD playback in this generation of consoles, is the $100 price point seen as unneeded by the console companies? Is $150 the new $100? I hope not.

I would have thought Sony would have dropped the price of the PS2 this holiday season.

Never.

My guess...

$100 PS2 - next holiday season
$100 Xbox - never, it will quietly disappear off store shelves at the current price point once 360 gets better established

i already have a ps2, but i have been wanting the new slimmer one, besides the fact that my current ps2 makes weird noises. I might just give in and buy the 150 one this christmas. wish me luck on finding one.

I keep hearing rumors that the PS2 price point is going to drop any day. I bet it will drop to 129.99 after Christmas and down to 100 when the PS3 comes out. I bet the XBOX will never drop in price. In fact, I saw new ones at Gamestop yesterday for 179.99. I guess Forza is packed in the box but still, thats a price hike in my book. Forza is a good game but if its packed in with the system, it should be free.

I think they'll both drop when its 'economically wise' to do so. Sony doesn't have much reason to drop the price since its still selling well so they can just use its "additional price" to offset some of the loss they are going to endure on PS3 launch.

It will never be economically wise for Microsoft, however, which is why everyone is suggesting that it will simply disappear from retail at its current price. They are losing money on the hardware still today...

Yeah, Im goin g with never on Xbox. MS is just going to shut down production, and the last units will sell themselves at $150.

As for Sony... I thought for sure wed see $129 this christmas. I guess thats coming Febuary/March? Sales ARE dropping, so they'll have to do something.

I see a $129.99 PS2 in the coming months or a bundle-pak w/ the usual advertisement blitz. It will be inevitable that sales start to decline continuously, especially w/ the looming PS3/Rev info marked for the coming expo shows.

The thing is that Sony has wiggle room, because the slim PS2 hardware certainly doesn't cost them $150 to make. On the other hand, though, the Xbox is a profit sieve at $150 because the price of key components was sealed up under contract with the producers.
