PS3 controller does not work when wireless

My ps3 controller used to work wirelessly, but now if I unhook it from the charging cable, it automatically turns off. I can still play when it's connected through the wire, but unhooking it means the controller stops working. Even pressing the PS button does not turn any lights on the controller.

I tried resetting the controller by pressing down on that reset button in the back of the controller and the lights turned off, but when I pulled the controller from the cable, it didn't do anything yet again.

I checked the charge on the controller after unplugging and plugging it back in to see if the battery was just completely dead, but the charge still showed complete after doing so.

I don't know what else to try, does anyone have any idea?

I have one with the same problem.
My guess is i left it unhook (when my first Ps3 YLOD on me) too much, and now the battery works only if it's directly hooked in.

That's what I was thinking, is there a way to test that besides how I tried to do? If it's really shot, is there a way to buy the battery on the cheap instead of a new DS3?

I was gone for 3 weeks and didn't use the PS3 in the meantime, one of my controllers still work just fine and the other one has this issue.

Sounds like a battery issue. My PS3 likes to skip when I'm watching blu-rays. Every Sony console I have has had a disk reading problem at some point. Except my PS2 slim which I bought recently after my PS2 wouldn't read disks at all anymore.

Def sounds like your battery is dead. I've yet to run into guides for replacing them that sounded worth it against buying a new controller.

Try to reconnect Bluetooth device from the main menu.

Reconnect bluetooth, maybe turn off other signals you may have recently turned on causing interference... Most likely, especially if it's an early SIXAXIS, the battery can't hold a charge, in which case you are stuck with wired, until you buy a new controller (or replace the battery).

I've had an issue pop up from time to time where there'll be serious controller lag when it's wireless. Switching my wireless router off and on or plugging the controller into the PS3 seems to fix it. Anyone know why this happens?

It's under the main menu on System ->Accessories -> Manage Bluetooth devices.

No. The controller just lost it's connection. It has to be done anytime you have a new controller you have to sync it up.

This will even happen to me sometimes if my power switch dies and the PS3 gets shut off improperly. But every time without fail all I've had to do is plug in the controller and it re-syncs without issue.

The suggestions are sound. Re-pair the controller with blutooth (might have lost the pair somewhere along the lines) or perhaps you have a faulty usb cable. I had a move wand I thought I was dead because it would only work while plugged in. But it turns out it just wasn't charging (even though it said it was). I replaced the cable and it started taking a charge again.

I think if this was simply a matter of a lost bluetooth connection, pressing the PS button without being plugged in would make the four LEDs flash indefinitely.

Faulty battery, it happens. Happened to me.

You batterie is dead.

And thanks for sharing this because I was wondering if those contollers could work even when the batterie is dead. Looks like I know the answer now and thank God its yes!
