PS3 @ E3: 1080p / HDMI *only* (confirm/deny?)

But for a TV to understand the signal that is outputted by the PS3, TV manufacturers have to know what they can expect, don't they? If the industry also hasn't even decided wether to use 1080p/60 or even 50, it wouldn't be very smart to go ahead with your own standard.

Also, my initial interpetation of there not being a standard, was that manufacturers haven't come to a unified language in which a high bandwith signal like this is going to be transmitted. Again, this is from the eyes of a layman.;)

Nah, it's all settled, there just aren't hardly any sets out there. 1080/60p is a done deal, and within a couple of years all the big sets will support it as an input. It is standardized.

ok... Link?

I think they are just talking about trailers and demonstration resolutions. They did the same kind of thing at E3. All trailers were running 1080p on that giant screen IIRC. The same with MGS4 and Project Force images later on. They were released at 1080p despite it being abundantly clear that the native resolution was 720p. I think it's just for display purposes, and not indicative of game engine requirements. PEACE.

You missed the point completely.

1. According ot ths fishy article - Sony simply wants 3rd parties to connect to HD sets with HDMI and play stuff at 1080p. That's the part that won't fly.
To clarify again, this is not an article... it's simply a memo from Sony to third party companies.

And yes, as others have pointed out, this is for E3 ONLY. It should not have ever been taken as indicative of PS3 requirements for actual product. As such, this is pretty unsurprising. As noted earlier, it makes sense that Sony would want to advertise the fact that games on their system are being displayed in 1080p, regardless of a game's true resolution.

HD is all the buzz right now, Sony knows this, and you can bet they'll be making a big deal about how its capabilities compare to the X360 (1080p vs. 720p, Blu-ray vs. DVD, etc.).

In the end, I don't really care all that much. Just show me some good games.

Same is true of HD-DVD tho', right? It's a Hollywood thing.

Yep. Lawyers.

And again, this is problematic for 3rd parties not just because of frame rates etc., but because finding 1080p sets to rent for E3 will be a humongous clusterfuck.

Well, the HDMI site disagrees..

..though the 1080p/60 demo at CES was using two cables. Perhaps that's a good reason for dual-video out ;)

The current HDMI standard doesn't have enough bandwidth for a 1080p60 video signal and more advanced audio specs. Hence the need to make the HDMI spec faster so enough bandwidth exists for both the most demanding video and audio standards outputting at the same time.

I don't have a link to the info, but if I remember correctly 1080p60 takes up almost all the bandwidth available on the current HDMI standard. Obviously this is a problem because people expect bleeding edge sound technology to go along with their movie video signal.

Well if they're specifying HDMI only, then maybe it's because they're supplying the monitors themselves? Would make sense if they're pushing Sony 1080p sets as well.

I can see the bandwidth issue being another delay reason too. Does 1.3 up the cable bandwidth spec?

Well, at least this almost confirms that there is a possibility of playable code or new videos in E3. Which is good, it would have sucked to see the same ones for the fourth time.

How is an email from some dude's friend a confirmation of anything whatsoever?

I've already said that this came directly from SCEA. I understand what you're trying to say here (I wouldn't make that assumption either), but let's please get past this just being an email from the friend of some dude (me). It was originally, but that was put to rest a short time after this was posted.

Maybe at their booths, they require that spec.

At least from what I heard with other publishers so far, they aren't showing PS3 stuff on 1080p monitors at their booths. That may have changed, who knows.

Sony Ruby

Sony Qualia 004 R2

HP 1080p DLP

All will accept/display 1080p/60fps image via HDMI

BTW, Samsung BD player has been upgrated to 1080p/60 too....so that along with PS3, Pioneer Elite Blu Ray player and Sony stand alone Blu ray player will output 1080p/60 :)

Quick note, there are a few games that have native 1080p modes being worked on for PS3.

*shakes head* Then this is going to get just as silly as the 'varying performance in different output resolutions' problems we've seen in a handful of 360 games.

ONE RESOLUTION FUTURE!

You couldn't be more wrong:

HDMI has *ALWAYS* had enough bandwidth for 1080p/60 (only 148.5MHz is needed for this) since HDMI version 1.0

Dont believe the FUD :)

EDIT: Nevermind....you were saying 1080p/60+advanced sound algos (DD+, DTHD, dts-HD)

Yes, for this HDMI 1.3 is needed but I wanted to clearify HDMI has always been 1080p/60 on the video side, which was all HDMI was used for in the early days :)

In the most recent podcast of Major Nelson, Hryb interviews one of the people responsible for the whole HD development in Microsoft. He says that current cables can't handle the bandwith of 1080p. According to him HDMI can't relay the signal because sound also takes up a big piece of the bandwith.

Secondly, he said that there is no 1080p/60 standard yet. I guess it is a bit dangerous of Sony to go ahead with 1080p/60 while there is no concensus regarding the standard.

Rendering or outputting in 1080p/60, I doubt the PS3 is going to that by digital means.

Major Nelson is wrong, 1080p/60 has been part of the HDMI standard since day one, check out the HDMI site for info

from posts on some of the Audio Video forums out there of people mastering both HD and Blu Ray discs, not all the movies out there will have this flag, it seems to be on a studio to studio and movie to movie basis on which ones have the flag and which dont

That is correct, if a movie has the ICT flag it must be clearly shown on the packeging of an HD-DVD or Blu-ray case...

Not all movies will have ICT, so you can vote with your wallet, if you wish :)

of topic but which format are you pushing for?

I'm gonna guess Blu-ray

Yeah, I am pro Blu-ray....

They have all the Hollywood studio support sans Universal....and I am getting a PS3 anyway....that is my main reason...

But that is besides the point, ICT refers to both HD-DVD and Blu-ray....no difference there...
