PS3 owners ... has anyone messed around with the custom resolution output mode?

All I know is, my LCD TV supports resolutions up to 1366x768, and the PS3 outputs a 750p signal for me (in the XMB, web browsing, and Playstation Store). Very nice.

Haven't played any games on it yet but I suspect I'll be forced to choose 720p or one of the "standard" resolutions for actual game playing.

750p is the Japanese version of 720p. It actually is not 750p though. It has its roots in the predecessor to Digital Hi-Vision, which was the short lived Hi-Vision analog Hi-Def standard aka MUSE. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sub-nyquist_sampling_Encoding_system

You won't have to do anything special.

Details, please. Can you select any resolution up to 1080p, basically? Manually enter dimensions?
You can either select the maximum supported resolution of your set (and the PS3 will assume everything listed above your choice is also supported):

Or, if you select Custom, it simply allows you to manually select which resolutions are supported from the list:

Note that these are with a Component/D-Video cable. I don't know if the options are different for HDMI.

Oh....

I thought custom would let me set 1152 x 648 like my HTPC lets me :(

Not that it probably makes a difference since my set just downsamples the image to that rez anyhow.

According to the screenshot, component cable doesn't allow 1080p?

That's an overscan issue, though. I assume you are using HDMI? The TV will take various PC resolutions and find the nearest HDTV standard resolution match. The TV will view 1152x648 as 1280x720p, but many of those pixels around the sides will not be rendered as Windows is only sending that many pixels to the display. It's still using the 720p display mode, however.

You can adjust your TV via service mode to remove overscan and view the entire picture, but the side effect of doing that is the introduction of larger black bars framing PS2 titles (which lack overscan).
