Also, the Blu-Ray in the PS3 is update-compatible, or so I hear. Truths, or filthy lies?

The PS3 has all the hardware required to support the Blu-Ray standard up through Profile 2.0 (online interactivity) with the correct firmware update. It's currently updated to Profile 1.1

It's a powerful enough machine to probably incorporate any other future profile changes in software making it, by far, the most future-proofed Blu-Ray player on the market.

No mention of Everyday Shooter? When I get a PS3, that and SSHD will likely be the first purchases.

Very true. Everyday Shooter is the best original downloadable budget priced game I've played so far, even ahead of Pac-man CE and Super Stardust HD in my opinion.

Hmm, neat, neat. And what of the HDMI? I hear that it is one cable that does both sound and sight. Does the PS3 support the latest iteration of that, the, umm, 1.3?

yes to all (although the ps3 also supports optical digital which is more useful for hooking up to hifi equipment).

Yes, so you can run one HDMI cable to the receiver, and one out of it to the HDTV. Hopefully you're receiver supports Lossless audio and so you can take advantage of one of the most overlooked PS3 advantages.

what is the advantage of runing two HDMI cables, rather than just the one to the reciever?

The second cable delivers the digital picture signal to the tv.

It's also nice that you can have one cable running to the TV (where wires are harder to cover up sometimes if you do the wall-mount way) if you have multiple devices. They all go into the receiver which handles the sound, and passes through the video to the TV.

Oh.

So, let me get this straight: HDMI goes from TV to PS3, and from PS3 to sound output device. Thus, two cables, but without the need to connect from TV to sound device directly, avoiding another cable.

My family has speakers that are probably older than you guys (including the 20+ year olds). How can you tell they support Lossless in the new speakers at the store?

Not quite. The PS3 has only one HDMI port on it.

The PS3 can send both sound and picture data over one cable to a compatible HDMI audio receiver which removes and outputs the sound signal. It passes the video information through a second HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.

Speakers are analogue. Lossless only applies to digital information being stored and/or transmitted. The lossless digital signal is converted to analogue electrical impulses before it reaches your speakers and any degradation in signal quality will be due to good old fashioned interference and impedance.

What device with HDMI can't do this? (assuming that you have the proper reciever)

PS3 --HDMI--> Receiver --HDMI--> TV.

It's the receiver that would support lossless audio forms. You'd have to ask a clerk (good luck with that one), look at the box/owners manual, or research it online. You can throw just about whatever speakers you wish at the receiver just so they'll handle the wattage put out by the receiver and have an usable ohm rating (which really isn't an issue these days as it's generally covered). Uncompressed Audio/LPCM/PCM are usually the features you're looking for if you want to take advantage of the games/movies better soundtracks.

oh yeah!

Used PS3 came without a USB cable for the controller (I think)

can I use any old USB cable (with the proper ends, of course) or is there something special about the ones branded for PS3?

I should have a PS3 by mid -to-late Feb, sooner if I'm lucky. =)

Absolutely not. HDMI transmits information digitally. So either the 1s and 0s went from one device to another perfectly or the cable is broken. There's no such thing as a 'noisy' 0. Don't buy one that fell off the back of a truck but a reasonably priced cable online should be just fine.

The PS3 uses standard A to Mini-B USB cables.

I have a feeling I'll be looking at picking one up by the end of the year, but I definitely want to see what kind of new configurations and price drops, as well as actual game release dates for the "anticipated" list, are going to happen before I do.

Honestly, it just seems to me like a pretty lame time to buy in.

With the 80Gig on the way out, you just know somethin's a brewin'.

And that somethin' will probably come to fruition before any notable games drop, disappointment or no. Might as well at least wait it out and see.

"Keepin it real" line-up for me, though? $300 price tag, white hardware, dual shock pack-in, and Metal Gear 4, Tekken 6, and White Knight on the shelf would probably be a go.

It could happen, but I doubt it. I have a feeling that both "whites" will be a letdown for this plan (IE - no release on WKS and no White consoles for NA). Price is a pretty safe bet by Christmas, however, if you ask me.

...then again, I might just wait for FFXIII. Dunno. I'll have to see.

I don't see why Sony would waste time submitting the white PS3 to the FCC and have no plans to release it here. Unfortunately, according to the user's manual they submitted, it's just 40GB and doesn't have DualShock 3 either.

I'm -still- holding out, although I was hoping Sony would at least announce the white one or a replacement for the 80GB today; but they did nothing. I really hope I don't have to wait until the GDC for them to announce something. Ugh.

Honestly, it's fear of what they might do that drove me to buying it now.

Hardware BC for me.

Can anybody give me an idea of what PS3's online is like? For instance:

1.) How is it like/not like Xbox Live?

2.) What hardware do you need (ie; modems, headsets)

3.) What is the online community like (Live's is stereotypically made up of asshole teenagers)

4.) How does downloading work?

1.) How is it like/not like Xbox Live? Its Free. No Cross game invites or messaging.. yet. No Gamerscore. Does have buddy list. Expect a massive change when Home is finally released.

2.) What hardware do you need (ie; modems, headsets) You can connect through Ethernet or through a wireless router. Almost any USB or Bluetooth Headset will do.

3.) What is the online community like (Live's is stereotypically made up of asshole teenagers) Really cool. Of course theres occasional shit talkers but nowhere near as much as Live, and i havent heard any racial slurs at all... and i play COD4, Resistance, Tekken online, and Warhawk regularly.

4.) How does downloading work? You can download things from the store or through the browser. You can pause and resume. It automatically stops downloading when you're playing online. you can queue up to 10 (might be more, never tested) downloads at a time.

Much appreciated. Sounds good TBH. Not as integrated as Live, but that is a good thing in some ways.

I wish we could get definitive news on what new SKUs are coming. There's apparently a 120g which will probably not have BC, but probably will have DS3. And there may very well be a redesign coming by Fall. Rumors. You know how that goes.

I'd like some damn confirmation at least.

The 40gb Uncharted + Ratchet + Additional Sixaxis + Pirates 3 Blu-ray(Huh) bundle is now on sale in Finland for 530€. Pretty damn good deal, considering the 40gb alone is 470€. Actually, that is just fucking ridiculous. Might have to bite now. I wasn't sure before because there's no rumble, but today I tried playing my Ps2 with rumble turned off. Didn't bother me a bit. I think I'll still hold out until GDC though, in case they announce a SKU with BC. I'd also like a Resistance 2 trailer to motivate me. :D

Well, apparently Sony will soon be unveiling a 120GB-160GB PS3 with Dual Shock 3 to take the place of the 80GB. It seems the mole has been accurate before, so I'll be holding off on my purchase until further details emerge.
This is the kind of thing I'm waiting for. Let's just hope it has backwards compatibility like the 60 GB version.

Backwards compatibility, maybe.

Backwards compatibility like the 60 gig model for the USA and Japan that has the EE+GS, absolutely not.

You can queue up to 16 downloads at time plus 1 additional download which they won't let you background download.

In another words it's a total of 17 downloads but out of the 17 only 16 goes into the queue.

Shorter answer: No, not worth it.
Long answer: Compare.
*6.5ft 1.3 Category 2-compliant PLAYSTATION®3 HDMI Cable for $59.99
OR one of these:
*6ft 1.3a Category 2 Certified Monoprice.com HDMI Cable for $5.24
*10ft 1.3a Category 2 Certified Monoprice.com HDMI Cable for $5.79
*15ft Monoprice.com HDMI Cable for $6.52 (These are the ones that I purchased, work great.)
Pretty big price difference, huh? The monoprice cables are just fine, the only small hassle that you might run into is the fact that they may be back-ordered from time to time, but they are great about notifying you when they are restocked.

I've been a PS3 owner since July, but I have a quick hardware related question and didn't think it was necessary to start a thread so this seems about as good a place to ask as any.

I need one of those PS3 PSOne/PS2 memory card adapters to transfer over my save game files from my old memory cards to the PS3 HDD. I'm in the UK and I've never seen the official adapter in the flesh, but there are plenty of unofficial ones around which are significantly cheaper than what the official one is online.

Although historically in terms of save games I've always gone official with memory cards etc. I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with using an unofficial adapter?

I didn't really want to pay over the odds for an official adapter when it's something I'm only going to use once provided that an unofficial one will work fine...

Question:

I just received my tax rebate and, along with some spending cash I've been saving, I've had my eyes set on the PS3. The only thing is, I don't have a HD television set nor do I have a reliable Internet connection. Should I even bother for right now? I've also been meaning to get a PSP. Should I just settle for that right now if the PS3 option isn't a smart one?

700 bucks

Strictly for entertainment purposes. Of course, I could always save it, but everyone's entitled to a hobby, even one as expensive as gaming.

Do you expect to have any other disposable income in the near future?

I'd almost recomend getting a PSP, and an affordable HDTV right now, and then getting the PS3 later.

Not that you an't use the PSP without those things, but if all three are things you want, then I'd go for two rather than one.

I personnaly bought the official one since when I needed it (at launch :P), the only non official one was only 3€ cheaper here (France). I know guys that had corrupt files problems with one model. Sorry but don't remember the brand :/
Other people I know that bought another non official one were fine.

I'd go PS3/HDTV. Depending on which SKU you get, you should be able to find an 20-30" HDTV with in the $3-400 range.

Why would you recommend a PSP? He want's a PS3....

I'd get the psp. At least you can buy some games while saving up to get a decent hdtv. The TV is going to cost you and you dont want to get a cheap piece of crap that you will have to replace later on. Or get a ps3 and play your games on you computer moniter.

Does anyone know if there's been any new information (last few weeks) on upcoming SKUs or sales?

Pretty much nothing, except some speculation about a silver model dropping in Japan, and people hopeful it will come with the white to N.A. & Europe.

No news on a price drop or new sku at all.

Should I go for it? If you get a Sony Card today (not sure for how long) you get $100 off a SonyStyle online purchase. They have 80gigs in stock too. So tempting.

Any new skews that come down the line probably wont be enough better to justify waiting at this point. Dual Shock 3 is the only reason for waiting IMO anyway.

i just purchase a ps3 with my tax return and I have to say I'm really happy with my purchase. I bought Uncharted "AWESOME", R&C Tools of Destruction, COD4 "own it on 360" and just picked up last night Warhawk "w/bluetooth headset" and I'm happy with what I got and currently I have my PS3 connected to a 21" Gateway LCD Monitor via DVI/HDMI Adapter and works perfect and looks clean. Ordering a HDMI cable for my Philips LCD thru monoprice.com so you can't go wrong in getting a ps3 just remember you have some triple A titles heading to the ps3 way.

Now I have to say with online chat like in COD4 on PS3 is a lot more boring on the Xbox 360 just because everyone usually has there Mic connected on the Xbox 360 and on the PS3 you don't and the most annoying thing is since everyone is using different headsets it could be a pain cause at times I could hear everything. But other than that it is awesome.

Well worth my purchase.

Are there any good dust covers out there specifically made for the PS3?
I don't really use mine right now outside of an occasional movie. I just wanted to grab a 60 gig before they disappeared. I plan to buy Burnout and some other games once Sony implements the in game soundtracks.

I don't know where else to put this but I was at Target last night and Resistance and Warhawk (w/headset) were 39.99. So anyone Prospective buyers of those games should go there to get them.
