PS3/PSN Port Forwarding Guide/Networking Tips & Tricks

Having troubles staying connected to the PSN? Slow download speeds? Try this guide. It may help solve your PSN connection problems.

I was constantly getting disconnected from the PSN, getting slow download speeds, friends list wouldn't load, I couldn't even send psn messages at one point. After a bit of searching, I found this guide and it fixed the problem for me.

****This guide isn't mine. I did not make it. Just thought I would post it here to help others with their PSN connection/download speed problems.****

Port Forwarding Guide:

1. First follow this guide to setup a static IP address for your PS3.

2. After following the Static IP guide from step #1, go to http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm and look for the name brand and model number of your router. Usually the name/model number of your router is on the bottom of it.

3. After finding your router, click on 'PlayStation Network', then follow the instructions on how to forward the ports for your router.

4.(optional) Enable DMZ "demilitarized zone" for the static IP you gave your PS3 in step #1. How do I enable DMZ for my router? Usually it's under the Advanced Settings or Firewall settings page in your router's web interface. Check your router's company website/FAQ for more details.

If anyone else has any other tips or tricks that helped you out with PSN connection/download speed issues, post them here and I will add them to the OP.

Has anyone else tried and tested it ?

I did this a few years ago and it's been working for me ever since.
I also did this for my friend who recently got a PS3. He had a NAT3, connection and kept having connection problems with CODMW3. After I configured his PS3 and router using this guide he now has NAT2 and no more connection problems.

From what I understand, all you're basically doing is just opening the ports of your router so it can communicate with the Playstation Network better.

What's the point of port forwarding if you're just going to put it in a DMZ anyways? For what it's worth, I wouldn't use DMZ. Use upnp if your router supports it, otherwise forward the ports manually.

As long as you're NAT1 or NAT2 you're good. Some router will also just need some convenient ports open. (I suppose the list in the tutorial up there?)

For Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising you HAVE to forward port 9106/UDP from your router to your PS3. Otherwise player connections won't work in case you are the host.

Took ages to figure that out. manual doesn't specify anything. Plenty of people say that "noone would join them", but actually connections to their game just won't work.

This info may also be true for Operation Flashpoint: Red River. I'm unsure about that because I never removed the port configuration. Online worked for that game as well w/o problems.

I personally think this whole port fowarding stuff is a bunch of bull shit. As someone who cant even play tekken tag 2 cause of my nat3 setup, ive done everything possible to change it and nothing works. Ive got some good knowledge on how to work around network configurations and still cant get it to work, so i can only imagine those people who have no idea why they cant play and have to knowledge on how to change the settings.
