PS3 Remote Play-Play PS3 Games on PSP! (Unfortunately, the first one is LAIR)

belvedere

When stumbling upon this on the Playstation.com boards, I just had to try it for myself. To my surprise, it worked...

Original post.

So you can play Lair on your PSP using Remote Play. The first time you launch it you will receive a timeout error (at least I did). I reconnected and then it launched, starting from the THX demo.

You fly with the analog nub. It stutters sometimes but is definitely playable. The resolution isn't bad either.

I've only tried it via ad-hoc with both my PSP and PS3 on the same WLAN. Maybe someone could try it outside of their own network.

My quick/horrible pics.

Is this something built into the game or could it possibly work with any ps3 game?
Games have to be specifically coded to do this.

So far Manichi no Isso and this one, I guess, are the only two.

No other games I have work. I've only tried Warhawk today, but in the past R6:V, Resistance and Motorstorm didn't work. It seems like the functionality is there if devs want to support it. Maybe this was something enabled in the recent SDKs.

Interesting that it works with a graphically demanding game like Lair, I honestly only expected this to work on games like SPF2, SSD etc.

So the devs don't mind you playing with an analog stick after all :lol

How many games support this? What does the game look like on PSP? This boggles my mind.

When you think about it, it makes sense.

All the PS3 is doing is sending the information it would normally send to a TV, to the PSP screen. The only issue would be latency.

how is it bullshit? do you think it is running on the PSP?

Remote Play is basically like the PSP being the controller and screen for the PS3, but the actual game is being played on the PSP.

every RPG for the PS3 needs to have this feature.

This is the only one, and its very possible that it's just a glitch. Still awesome though.

The local connection doesn't have any latency at all, which is weird since the XMB even lags a bit on the PSP. I haven't tried through the internet though.

This shit is amazing despite it being for a crappy game like Lair.
Just imagine being able to play little big planet on your psp while away from home.
This stuff just boggles my mind.

Did you try it too chubs?

I may have to go to Starbucks down the road and try it from outside the WLAN.

Rawr, I should get some credit for posting it here on GAF first :p

Just kidding. That's some seriously awesome stuff though. Has anyone tried it outside of their local network?

So now you can play LAIR without the tilt controls?

That solves like 90% of critics' complaints.

No, alot of the controls don't work because of the lack of buttons/funtionality..

You can't boost mid air, you can't do a 180 turn, you can't stop mid air, you can't really do any up close battles and you can't land your dragon on the ground.

Yeah, I got a connection has timed out message.. Might just be my internet though

I'd love to try it, to see for myself.

I'd almost hope any remotely latency tolerant game would be useable like this, PSN games particularly. Add the ability to remotely power on and off your PS3, and you could have a nice little collection of PS3 games available on your PSP wherever you go.

WTF.

Crazy.

This is pretty damn cool actually. How do you play this game on PSP though? No motion support, can't control dragon??

How much of the controls work when using the a USB pad?

how the fvck is this even possible?

Dude all it is doing is compressing the output of the PS3 sending it to the PSP and translating PSP butting mashing back to the PS3. It's not that controversial or complicated. :lol

Lair is actually ideal for this because of their "dynamic LOD" system. They ramp down the LOD a lot, compress, and send to the PSP, so the overhead from compressing isn't too painful probably. The SPUs can do seriously crazy fast streaming compression anyhow.

I havent tried but I'd imagine it's the same..

Stopping your dragon is done by L2/R2, as is landing - the PSP has no such buttons
Doing a 180 turn is done but moving the Sixaxis upwards, and speeding up is done by moving it downwards.

Otherwise you simply control the dragon as you would with an analog stick, using the analog nub on the PSP. It works fine, just a shame you can't do all the other neat stuff.

*EDIT* Tried it over the internet again and got "A connection error has occurred. The connection with the PS3 system has timed out".

Holy crap, Sony delivers!

Imagine having this in GT5 and being able to play it anywhere you have a network connection...

I sence that some people are thinking the psp is rendering the game itself :lol

I would think the ps3 is playing the game like normal but the visuals are sent to the psp and displayed constantly so you can play the game on another screen, basicly like holding your tv with built in controls.

It's pretty nice tho, a good use for the psp in the bathroom.

Phoning home to your PS3 in a hotel room could be even cooler with the AV-out functionality on the new PSPs. Play your PS3 games on your TV via your PSP. Ditto for showing photos etc., you can basically share your PS3 with others away from Home on their TV (if there's wifi around at least!).

I'm at a loss for words.
