Ok, so my 2+ year old, out of warranty PS3 slim blu ray drive randomly makes the rattling noise heard in the video below when playing games. It's very random, not every game, not all the time, but it's happening more and more lately.

The fix is a new bluray drive.

I've seen tutorials on how to replace a Slim's bluray drive and im sure i can handle it, but does anyone know a reputible site where i can get one and how much the drive costs? I live in the U.S., and would like to buy one from someplace in the US to save on shipping, etc....

I just swapped out a laser and that fixed my issue. For the part on eBay cheap and saw some Blu-Ray drives on there too. If I remember correctly, the drives were around $50-75.

I can understand the hesitation with eBay but my experience was pretty good, got the laser in 4 days and shipping was included in the price! (USA seller)

I have a 60GB Phat backwards compatible PS3 that works great but the drive is busted, not just the lazer. A replacement for this model is 100+

my friend's ps3 slim's bluray drive or laser is broken. You put in a disc and it makes some noise and doesn't read the disc.
First he got a local place to take a look at it. I think they they tried swapping a different drive and it wouldnt read still, so he left.
Another friend said to just replace the laser, so he ordered a new laser, replaced it and it still doesn't work.

Since i was in the neigbourhood, I dropped by the local placed and asked about it. I asked about just replacing the drive, and he said that the ps3 are locked with the corresponding bluray drive and cannot be replaced (or something along those lines).
Which is weird because why would they try swapping the drive in the first place if they knew it wouldn't work.
My concern is that since we replaced the laser and it still doesn't work, did the guy they took a look at at the local place somehow fucked it up?

If we replaced the laser and it doesn't work and the local place swapped drives and it still doesn't work, that means the ps3 is totally fucked.
My first suggestion was to replace the entire drive, but from the sound of things it will not work.

My ps3 blueray start to get errors in the middle of games but play bluray movies fine. And is fine too with download games. Is a problem with the reader even if work with movies?

I reckon you should hardware hack it with the E3 downgrader, play games from HDD and USB and negate any future headaches regarding drive failure.

i asked him before to put a dvd in, and he says it does the same thing

Mine does the clicking and not loading thing but the tilt method works. I don't really understand why tilting the system makes the disc read. DVDs work fine.
