PS3 soon to support Xvid and Divx (Possibly for HOME?)

PS3 soon to support Xvid and Divx
Link: PSU.com

Since the latest firmware 2.0 update, Xvid and Divx files can now be detected as video options on the PS3.

Now the files still won't work on the PlayStation 3, but this new find may lead us to believe Sony is planning to support both Xvid and Divx files in the future. My guess is that Sony may be doing this so that when Home is launched, users can convert their files to Divx (for smaller file sizes) and use them to display in their Home studios.

Divx is well known in the internet world for its ability to compress lengthy video to smaller storage sizes, without losing visual quality. Xvid (Divx spelled backwards) is a direct competitor to Divx, providing similar compression features and supporting MPEG 4 and H.263 video formats.

If Sony plans to fully support these video formats, this will help when importing videos into your PlayStation Home as they will upload faster without losing quality.

So basically you can now import all your porn easier...lol

mkv is NOT a format. It's a CONTAINER. It's just a way to join a video and audio file together, like a DIVX file and an MP3 or an Xvid and an AAC.

Divx and Xvid are the largest used formats for illegal torrents and porn. Once Home hits....I wonder what Sony will do to stop people from playing movies like Spider-man 4 TSRePack.Xvid.mpg in their home for their friends....lol

DivX and XviD, awesome! I encode pretty much all my work in those formats (and Quicktime, but I doubt we'll see that for a while...).

Sorry if this is a noob question...but what format is .mkv?

mkv isn't a format it's a container just like avi. But scene releases of 720p x264 is in mkv containers so that why people want support for it.

Who uses divx anymore? Even the pirates abandoned that four years ago.

depends on what youre talking about.
divx3.11 is dead, yeah. and sony wont support it as its a hacked ms mpeg4 codec.

divx4/5/6 are all mpeg4 asp. same as xvid. only thing different is the fourcc code in the file header.

Don't give me that 'piracy' bullshit. It's used because it's the most popular and most file efficient.

Do you say the same about mp3 support?

But the bonus of licensing divx 6 is that it will decode divx 3 files, regardless of their legality.

Shouldn't PSU.com be banned already?

Conversion to DivX is very unlikely to be supported, while importing these older files into H.264 is not so unlikely.

Given that people are actually playing it now, it's hardly a broken promise.

Is that the beta that that Kaz has thrown back to the designers saying he wasn't happy with it?

For all this talk about penis and porn everytime something like this gets mentioned (camera, user generated stuff etc) I've yet to encounter it on either platform.

Do it Sony!

Whilst XBMC has done me well as a Media Center due to it's awesome format support, I'd like to see both the 360 and PS3 be able to support these ubiquitous formats, avoiding the need for re-encoding, or stuff like Transcode / TVersity.

Interesting that the rumour of Xvid in the 360 fall update was laughed at, but the PS3 supporting it isn't...

Personally I don't think we are likely to see either support it.

Why not? So far Sony has tried to be as open as possible supporting a bunch of stuff.

Any webcam, keyboard, mouse, headset, memory card, hard drive.
They don't force atrac or their own formats.
They could have made you buy some media streaming program, but instead adopted the DLNA standard for videos.

I'd say the chances are better than Microsoft and the Proprietary-360.

There is no such format as DiVX or XVid. Both are implementations of MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) video encoding with maybe some extensions. Calling it DiVX makes it sound like your asking for something proprietary and drags all the baggage of DiVX into the conversation such as it being strongly associated with movie piracy.

So what people should be asking Sony for is a proper implementation of the MPEG-4 ASP standard preferably supporting avi (in addition to mp4) containers. It would be no big deal if it was .mp4 only since tools exist to move the data from one container to another in a few minutes.

Supporting ASP would be incredibly awesome and really would make the PS3 a multimedia center.

Technically, would this allow the PS3 to play ripped HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies?

blu-ray and hddvd are either vc1 or h264.
ps3 does already play h264.

if you by rip, you mean a reencode to mpeg4asp, then... eh... yes.

I don't understand the "reducing storage without reducing quality". If you want to use the best codec available you encode using H.264, not xvid or divx. This is just a matter of compatibility, and has nothing to do with home, but with improving PS3 as media center.

I'm sure we will see eventually a download in the PS Store to enable divx playback, since we have to pay the royalties to do so. And I'm also sure that will come before home.

So perhaps then they should just release it now even in a state they actually aren't happy with just to prove to people it isn't broken promise.

eh, not really news ever since the little divx watermark in previous home demonstrations, but cool nonetheless.

I hope they support both but frankly I can't see them doing it. Sony, the most notoriously controlling company when it comes to media formats (second only to Apple) now support the two formats used with piracy.
Sorry I don't buy it.
but I will buy one if this is true and the Microsoft's fall/winter update doesn't add these formats

PS3 Linux already does it, and without the fruity avatars and "personal spaces".

So I wouldn't have to live with Linux; I'd just have to put up with all the Home bs in it's stead. :\

I don't care which console supports it first, just do it. I'd LOVE to retire my modded Xbox to the bedroom or something and free that space in my entertainment center, but until one of the other consoles supports these formats directly I'm not going to do that. (I never could get the transcoding in TVersity to work)
