PS3 Video Thread

Suikoguy

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
While we wait for the linux programming crew to work with the PS3, and for Sony to ship additional systems so the LPC can work with it, the ps3 does have some video support, without the need for any special version of windows.

Software Tools:

PS3 Video 9
File Server for PS3

http://www.redkawa.com/ Has Video and Server tools out for PS3 (they are buggy however)

As previously mentioned, both programs were seemingly tossed together, and both have bugs.. so tread lightly. One in particular effects the File Server;

You CAN set the default directory for the File Server, but you have to do it in the settings file located in C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\File Server\core\settings.txt
Edit the start directory to this format

StartDirectory=C\:\\MyVideo\\

Leave it blank if you want a drive selection as your default.

I was able to use this to put a converted MP4 File from PS3 Video 9. I'm still experimenting with the settings of PS3 Video 9, which does not seem to like custom profiles yet...
Seems the only files it will transfer are files the PS3 browser is set to accept, such as MP4 files. I'll try it with music in a while, but it seems to me that the best option for Music and Images would be a portable device or memory stick, and using the PS3 to copy them all at once.

Transfer speed IS fast though, so it is good for big MP4 files.

I'll keep this updated with any useful information. I'll also try to keep up with the linux crews to see how video tools are coming along.

Does anyone know what file formats you can 'stream' via the PS3 web browser?

Not in relation to this software, but in general?

Not in relation to this software, but in general?

I updated the main topic with more information about compatible formats:

I would assume if it falls into any of those categories, it should allow you to download it off your computer via the PS3 Server software. I've only tested it so far with MP4s

I copied a video converted by PS3 Video 9 to a memory stick duo and it cannot find the video on PS3. Does it have to be in a certain directory?

nm, got it

Suikoguy, after setting up my default folder, on the PS3 I need to enter the ip address: port number of my pc?

Also is there a converter for H264 mov files to AVC?

Wario, try the "Display All Files" option.

H.264 and AVC are different names for the exact same codec.
ahhh reading up on all these formats is making my head go dizzy.

I tried some freeware mov to avi converters and they're giving me error. :/

I'm asking if anyone knows what codecs you can stream from a website ... any website ...

... not copy using this software.

MOV and AVI are just containers :P Yea, video formats can get confusing.

seems the ps3 is almost as picky with video formats as the psp right now. I encoded a movie using ps3 video 9, set the resolution to 720p, everything else default, and put it on mpeg4 AVC @ 768.

Does anybody know what supported settings in ps3 video 9 will work? :X

I did some tests yesterday so I could encode some 720p stuff for you guys on playsyde, but it seems like the bitrate is stuck to 768! Needless to say a 720p video with that bitrate looks terrible.

What other settings did you use to get it running on the ps3? Its not working for me, even at 768 bitrate it says unsupported mp4 file. :(

Well I didn't even try it on the PS3, since mine if faulty.

Thats odd then, you can set the bitrate much higher in the program than 768, atleast in my ps3 video 9. Theres a drop down menu that goes much higher in the profiles.

There are downloadable HD trailers on the PLAYSTATION(R)Store, right? Someone should download one of those, then analyse it in Linux using something like MediaInfo to determine what bitrate/format/etcetera are acceptable.

I'd like some info on how to deal with other containers.

There seems to be a fair bit of content around in the right codecs but wrong containers.

eg .MKV containers with 720p h264 video. .ts files with ac3 audio (so needs changing to a .ps file)

The .ts/ps stuff is handled pretty well by VLC - just use the wizard with no transcoding to change to a ps format file and name it .mpg - PS3 will play it fine.

But .movs and .mkvs are a PITA. Is there any app that will just change the container to .mp4 without transcoding (which will take ages)?

PS3 video encoding is driving me nuts. It's really super choosy. What happened to KK's idea of PS3 "ripening" my video? Also, I just swtiched over to Ubuntu and it's very frustrating find no simple transcoder w/ gui besides vlc. Please let me know if you know any that's still simple but w/ more options.

Anyway, I tried PS3 Video9 on windows and couldn't get any video to work.

Following are my results using VLC under ubuntu with video set to h.264 and audio set to mpeg4 unless noted otherwise.
- xvid - bad
- wmv - bad
- reencode mkv that's already encoded in h.264, aac - bad
- stream copy above file to mp4 container without reencoding - bad
- renaming above file to .mp4 - bad
- old 320x240 mov - good!
- gametrailers Mass Effect X06 h.264 mov video/audio reencode - bad
- above file stream copy video/audio - bad
- above file reencode video, stream copy audio - good!
- gametrailers ipod mp4 straight up - bad, didn't bother to reencode
- apple 1080p Batman Begins mov stream copy - good!
- 1upshow - bad

The way to deal with this without re-encoding is to demux the audio and video streams from the MKV (using something like mkvtools for example) and then remux them into an MP4 container (using something like mp4box or similar). Unfortunately these tools typically aren't very user friendly, so you'll have to fiddle around with them until you can get them to do what you want.

Yeah, I just gave up too
Don't even think about trying to convert over a MKV to anything the PS3 likes either..

I had more luck with the PSP with video.

I think there might be some sort of max bitrate it takes, but i've already spent entirely too many hours this weekend on it, so it will have to wait till next week. Which by then, with Yellow Dog, we might not need to care anymore.

I used the first profile, AAC or whatever, and it worked. My videos look like shit...but then again, the videos weren't exactly the best quality to begin with, but looked lke crap on the PS3 still

Try Avidemux, grab it either in Synaptic or you can download it here assuming you are running Edgy otherwise here for Dapper .

Hope it helps.

Alright so I've been messing with video 9 for a bit. I raised the bitrate on AVC and it played in the ps3 no problem. Now that I can get movies converted, sending them to the ps3 in a easy fashion is needed.

I'm messing with the File Server, but when I check the black webpage on the ps3 browser, and click a mp4 or mp3 file it says "This page cannot be displayed". I'm thinking it may be something with the router or one of the settings in the program? If I can get the file server working and sending files to the ps3 I'll be good to go. :D no more carrying the memory stick back and forth between the computer and ps3.

edit:
nevermind, I got it working. had to change "AllowedFolders=" to the specific folder.
works perfect now, this is great. :D

Would you please share your video9 setting that works?

Any mac tools made available yet?

There are plenty of tools on the Mac for converting video over to MPEG4 h.264/AVC, or just standard MPEG4. For h.264, two I use the most are QuickTime Player Pro, and MPEG Streamclip (an awesome piece of software if you ever work with video). If you're going just regular MPEG4, Apple's MPEG4 exporter sucks ass, so I use iSquint (made for getting video on the iPod, but if you use the advanced settings, it'll export out the nice big movie files just fine).

If anybody uses QuickTime Player to export files ready for the PS3, please speak up. I sent a test video to a friend who has a PS3, but he says he was getting an odd band of green pixels on the video when playing it on the PS3.

I used the default settings for AVC, but i went to settings and changed the bitrate to the highest, which was 4096 I think. (I guess that will do for now :p)

Anyways, Now that I got everything working, this is simply awesome. I can encode a video file, set it to encode to a specific folder, and I dont have to be on the computer to download it to the ps3 when it finishes (since I have the file server setup to that same folder). I encoded a sample file of a hdtv episode and it looks great dispite the file being 1080p for my tv. As a positive the file size actually went down a little when converting to AVC without much quality downgrade.

As a negative, I dont think the 60gb will do for the ps3, I'm already down to 43GB. I'm thinking about asking "santa" for one of these for christmas...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136025
500GB should do. :) and with the file server I can download files directly to the external harddrive without using the ps3 space (which I will use for games and playstation store stuff).

I think these two programs just made me 10x happier with my ps3. :D

I'm on a Mac and I was using QTPro and it was driving me crazy. The quality of the MP4 clips wasn't that great and some of them weren't being recognized by the PS3.

I found a program called VisualHub which I loved using so much that I actually bought it. I've been using their iPod setting and choosing the Optimize for TV option and it makes great looking videos for me. (Couldn't figure out the MP4 setting)

Alright, this one is for BlimBlim (and anyone else looking to get past the bitrate limit).

In the folder:
C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Video Converter\Profiles\Video
theres a PS3.xml file for your profiles.
Change the vbitrate="____" to your desired bitrate and the new bitrate should show up in the drop down menu, and also show the bitrate when encoding on the left side of the program.

file size will be larger of course with higher bitrates, press the select button when playing the file in the ps3 to see if it works. I'm using default AVC profile settings with the custom bitrate edit above, works great and quality is much better. :D

edit: well im dumb, Evilore brings to my attention you can actually just type the bitrate in the drop down menu. :lol I'm not sure if it saves the bitrate when you restart the program but I suppose both ways should work. :)

Total Video Converter seems to work well for WM9 files (like IGN's MGS4 HD trailers). The unregistered version leaves a small watermark in the top left hand corner but is otherwise fully functional. This is useful since PS3 Video 9, at least for now, doesn't seem to handle these files directly, and autogk etc. don't seem to like them either. Nasty Microsoft etc. ;b

I just did a test run using IGN's GC MGS4 trailer. With Total Video Converter I selected h.264, high quality, 10000kbps video, 48000 audio sampling rate. Then put that into PS3 Video 9 and selected mpeg4 avc, 10000kbps video, 48000 audio sampling rate.

Yeah, it was double transcoded and you might think "ack!" but the resulting file is pretty fine, works on the ps3 and looks absolutely gorgeous on my bravia ;b

Oh, and I've been hearing that setting the audio to 48000 can prevent some playback problems on the ps3.

Well it seems this quicktime doesnt want to work with me. I got quicktime (7.3 I think). Got the 300 1080 trailer downloaded, plays fine on my computer but doesnt want to encode. Tried Total Video Converter (the trial version) and PS3 Video 9, both give me errors or end up with 0kb files. Weird because other mov files seem to work fine. Maybe I did something wrong when downloading the trailer?

I had tried playing directly with the ffmpeg version bundled with the PS3Video GUI and encoded some videos without the 768k bitrate limit, but for some reason it didn't work. I guess I had missed a switch or something.
Evillore: A very recent version of ffmpeg should be able to read directly from a WMV file without the need for a dual transcoding. That or using mencoder.
I'll try writing a tutorial as soon as I have a working PS3.

If you picked up quicktime pro, you should be able to use it to export .mov to an .avi format and then put it through PS3 Video 9. If that doesn't work, try autogk, I think that handles QT files too.

The GC 2006 MGS4 720p IGN trailer is 11,000kbps, and the E3 720p one is 10,000kbps.

Yea, but those weren't encoded with AVC. AVC is a much more efficient codec, you shouldn't need 10Mbit/s for 720p content (i'd say 4-6Mbit/s).

Not familar with ffmpeg but custom bitrates in Video 9 & Total Video Converter are working fine it seems.

Yeah, I see it but for some reason the export option is taking forever. It's at like 20% and its been going for like 15 minutes. Is that supposed to happen? I have autoGK, I'll try that.

edit: odd, put it in AutoGK, and it says "unsupported file type." I'll try redownloading the file.

edit2: think I got it working, redownloaded and exporting is going much faster.

Video 9 is simply a front-end for ffmpeg. If you activate the console you can see the command line it uses for the encoding.

Ah, I'm not sure then. Did you try the PS3.xml file edit?

I'm at work right now, so I can't try it.
I totally believe you btw, it's just that my testing (all 10 minutes of it before the PS3 crashed) using ffmpeg directly didn't work. But it was without a doubt my fault ;)
