ps3video9 problems

Hey all (i posted this in off-topic , but am reposting in here because its ps3 related =P )

Been ****in around with trying to convert videos through ps3video9

and i have 2 problems, wondering if someone can help me out??

(for ps3)

I have mkv files and avi files.

I have a rather large MKV file, which works if i convert it,but it takes forever.

ive heard of passthroughs , changing containers etc.

when i do mkv passthrough option , it goes in for 2 secs, says conversion complete and it just doesnt produce a file at all. Does this feature not work yet or am i doing something wrong?

2 is, i had a queue of 23 avi files to convert. They all converted fine , but half of them, when openeed with quicktime give me a bad particle movie atom or something error (2202 i beleive) but will work in VLC no problems. Is there a quick fix for this?

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

I find it's easier to not use ps3video9 for .mkv files, as the passthrough never works.

Demuxing the .mkv, reencoding the audio file to LC AAC & then remuxing into .mp4s also works, as long as the original video codec was something supported by the ps3. Fortunately FW1.82 included h264 support :]

You'll be wanting something like yamb (with mp4box) and nero reencode for the audio files (this too is free).

If it's got subtitles, the best thing to do is reencode using something like alltoavi and the quantisizer option (keeps a high bitrate, expect huge files). Then using ps3video9 to convert the .avi to .mp4. Do be aware that alltoavi stuffs up the file length timing though, so ps3video9 will sit on 100% while it completes the last 1/3 of the file.
Don't worry it ends up perfectly playable on the PS3.

Apparently megui is really good, but I haven't yet got my head around the configuration :/ So I use this clunky method of dealing with them.

Finally, in my experience, the more files you have queued with ps3video9, the worse the bitrate and overall quality gets. I only queue up about 3 hours worth of video at any one time.

Get mkvtoolnix and mkvextract GUI (you use mkvextract GUI to demux, you could simply use mkvextract contained in mkvtoolnix, which is required for the GUI to work, but then you'd have to write command lines to do it, so with the gui it is easier).
If the H.264 encode is level 5.1 or higher (like unrestricted level) then you need a program called h264info to change the level (it is still in alpha/beta, but it works well).
Then get mp4box and, if you hate command lines, YAMB (a gui for mp4box) with whoch you'll make the mp4 to give to your PS3.
Naturally, you'll also need something to encode to AAC LC. Get Nero Digital Audio, it's a good free AAC encoder. You'll need a GUI to use it with if you don't want to feed the program command lines, but for that I can't help you too much, I use foobar2000. There's many GUI for it so just give it a look around.
Once you have the RAW h264 stream (with corrected level if it needed correction) and the AAC LC audio, simply mux them with YAMB and feed the resulting MP$ to your PS3. if everything was done right, it'll play.

Oh, and like the other poster said, MeGUI is good, I use it usually. You could use it to actually make the AAC LC audio and mux to MP4 (and convert videos into H264) without needing YAMB (but, if you can, I'd say to use the still beta YAMB, since it should let you also set the FPS for the mp4, while the 1.6 version of YAMB makes them automatically 25FPS which isn't excatly what you'd want).

I posted the same question on many forums about PSPVideo9 and mkv.

Do a google search and you will see many people having conversion problems with mkv files.

Why the F**K are people ripping to mkv files all of a sudden?

Then they tell me get a third party progam to seperate the audio from the video then get another thrid party program to combine them back into avi then use my normal program to
convert to mp4.

Mux, demux, flux capacitor, etc. WTF? I wanna burn music vids or DVD's I wanna hit copy and let it rip like PSP Video 9 and DVD Shrink. I dont wanna have to do 10 steps and reverse engineering.

JUST RIP THE F**KING VIDEO TO AVI IN THE FIRST PLACE PEOPLE.

PS3Video9 is a finicky bitch at the best of times. It has a problem handling AC3 streams that are encoded at certain bitrates. If it sees one it'll just baulk and stop processing the file, which sounds like what you're experiencing.

Since the PS3 now supports AVCHD it might be worth waiting for someone to write a suitable multiplexer for that, given it can properly contain AC3 streams.

There's also a bit of development here for getting AVC+AC3 streams working in VOB/M2TS containers with the PS3:

Of course, it would help a great deal if the PS3 would playback 5.1 audio.

Sorry but .AVI is a shit container, especially because it doesn't support H264 without hacks.
Plus you don't need to turn anything from .MKV to .AVI to make an .MP4.
You simply need to demux the stuff contained into it and remux it into a .MP4 container, and only do conversion if what was in it isn't supported by the .MP4 specs.
.MKV is the best container there is right now, anything can be inserted into it and is the way most will go if they don't want to use .MP4 because it allows people to do alot of awesome stuff with it that other containers simply don't.

Whether or not AVI is a sh!t container is not the issue. The issue is most converting programs people use work well with converting avi to mp4, etc. Why rip to mkv if you know 99% of the population who use the normal programs to convert avi. etc. now cannot because you are using some new fangled "container. Every board I frequent has people who are used to dropping a avi, etc into a program(especially) one they paid for complaining that they now cannot convert mk4 to mp4 or if they do they have sync issues. Like I said I wanna drag, drop & convert. Not use 3 different programs or 3 different functions to convert one fracking file.

With that said, does anyone out there know of a drag n drop program that converts Mkv files and syncs correctly.

Because the people releasing encodes really don't care about those that want to convert from a container to another.
What matters to them is that people can play their encode, and that the encode doesn't have to go through some hacks to have it work with a specific container (.AVI doesn't support H264, a hack is required to have it work with it, and it breaks a few things in regards to the video encode when doing it).
That's why H264 encodes are released mostly into .MKV containers, sometimes into .MP4 containers (official container for MPEG4 AVC, but lacks many features that .MKV has), and only in some rare case are released into .AVI containers.

That said, I don't know of any other program except ps3video9 that can do the conversion easily. The only other way I know is through different steps like shown here.
