PS4 always boots to "Checking storage status"

My buddy needs help. Every time he boots up his PS4 it starts in the "Checking storage status" screen and tells him to reinstall the first firmware update, and then restarts with the same message all over again after the firmware is done reinstalling. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix?

Stuff tried so far:
Reinstalling firmware
System restore
Rebuilding database
Wipe and install from USB
Safe mode options 5, 6, and 7

Maybe reinstall firmware?

Right, sorry, should have been clearer. The firmware downloads and reinstalls, then the next time he boots it up the whole song and dance begins again.

Get him to download the firmware from the Sony website, stick it on USB (Formatted to FAT32) and then go into the safe mode options on PS4 (holding the power button on until you hear two beeps) then installing firmware from USB stick.

This will wipe the PS4 mind, but it might correct the issue.

Not sure if this is necessarily the case, but just trying to be helpful... I know when I got my PS4 I kept shutting it down by holding down the power button, not realizing that the only safe way to turn off my PS4 is via the on-screen menus. Every time you hold it down, the PS4 recognizes it as an improper shut down and will go ahead and check its drives. Let him know he can only put his PS4 to rest via the face buttons, if that's possibly the case... Did the firmware notice go away AFTER he updated...?

About 50% of the time I use the console buttons to turn off my PS4. If you have rest mode activated you have to hold it down until you hear two beeps and then it'll fully shut down. If you press the button once it'll shut down into rest mode.

I've never had a problem using the buttons. I wonder if what you described is a bug?

I've had this for months now and haven't found a solution. Also restmode doesn't seem to work properly. I think it's an error with the HDD... Is the HDD in the PS4 replaced by the 2tb seagate?

I had this upon updated 3.50, it wouldnt install. Replaced hdd, no joy. Firmware would never, ever install. Not off internet, usb, nothing. Literally nothing ever worked and the ps4 finally bricked itself after. I found it utterly unfixable and I tried everything. Had to get a new one.

Does he use the standby mode instead of shutting it off? I know the only time I've had problems was when using "Rest" mode instead of shutting it off fully. Have your friend try always shutting down instead. Using the on screen menu of course.

I'm no PS4 expert, but if this were a PC I'd guess an issue with the HDD or motherboard. Personally, I'd give Sony support a call

Yeah I'll tell him to try replacing his hdd if he has a spare lying around. I'll also tell him to call Sony.
Thanks for all of the answers guys.
