PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

So, we are approaching the week marker of the official PS4 launch, and I thought it would be fun to share some mini reviews, tips, complaints, tricks, etc. pertaining to the launch games we've played so far for the PS4. It can be as broad as you'd like (all the games are crap) or as specific as you want (Rumbler in KZSF is op). I welcome reviews (feel free to use a 5 or 10 point scale) as well. I don't trust the big vg sites for reviews other than to read one person's opinion on a game, so I want to read your thoughts and impressions on the PS4 launch titles.

As for me, I'm having a blast with pretty much all of the games I've played. I have KZ, BF4, Ghosts, ACIV, and NBA 2k as well as Resogun.

My current ranked order would be:
ACIV 9/10
Resogun 9/10
KZ multiplayer (GAF games only) 8/10
NBA 2k 8/10
BF4 7.5/10
Ghosts 7/10

I'd give that launch lineup as a whole, a solid 8/10. I'm having a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to playing a lot more of the KZ and AC story mode. BF and Ghosts have pretty fun campaigns as well, but I bought those two to play online and so far it's been going well. I do need to add more gaffers who play those two, though, as I'm tired of being a lone wolf when I play those. KZ-GAF has spoiled me :)

Feel free to share your thoughts on the launch lineup thus far, and share some tips, too! This is the first true AC game I play, and I am really enjoying it. I might try going for the platinum trophy on it, depending on how hard that proves to be, heh. Going to shoot for Resogun platinum, too. I have Knack as well, but it's still in the shrink wrapping, so I'm likely gonna trade it for NFS Rivals as the DriveClub delay really left a whole in the launch lineup.

Edit: no shills allowed. ;)

I'll use the Skip, Rent, Buy scale on my short list.

Killzone - Rent
Assassin's Creed IV - Buy
Resogun - Buy (even if you got it on PS+)

Killzone just isn't grabbing me. Resogun and ACIV on the other hand have been great so far.

Bolder games are the ones I'm done with so review is final:

ACIV = 9/10
Knack = 7/10
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes = 8/10
NBA 2K14 = 7.5/10
Killzone = 8/10
Battlefield 4 = 1/10 (until patch because I can't even play for more than a few rounds without crashing)
COD: Ghosts = 8/10
Injustice = 8/10
Resogun = 10/10
Contrast = 7/10
Flower = 8/10
NFS: Rivals (unknown since I'm still waiting)

Resogun: 8.5
Addicting gameplay, supplemented by insane visuals and soundtrack.

Killzone: 6.5
Beautiful showcase title that fails with ho-hum gameplay. Chapter 8 turned me off the game completely.

Knack: 7
Charming visuals. Simple, but rewarding gameplay.

Just started up Assassin's Creed.

I'll just post impressions since I haven't finished anything yet:

Resogun: Amazing, no reason to not play it since it's free with PS+.
Assassins Creed: I love the setting, My favorite AC since brotherhood. If you want a game to really sink time into this will be what you're looking for. If you don't like AC this probably won't change your mind.
Killzone: Gorgeous but ultimately average FPS. Gameplay is fine but nothing really elevates it above anything else.
Battlefield 4: LOL wish I could actually play it.

Ac4- arrrrrr maateys its a grand ole time
Resogun- shoot shoot shoot dodge and more shooting, love it
Ghosts- run , die, run, die, kill, die, fun, fast, good pick up,
Killzone-lighting is precious but boooooring...
Nba- 5 star dunk baby

AC4 9
KZ - seems awesome but haven't played enough
Knack 7 (bump up a point or two if you love old school 3d platformer/brawlers)
NBA 2k14 - 7 (insanely uneven... great gameplay/graphics though)
BF4 - Broken
Resogun - 9 (will be the launch game we still care about next year)
CoD - 6 (not a huge cod fan though)
NFS Rivals - 7 (some great ideas but feels rushed)
Warframe - 7 (fun with friends... havent felt the need to spend a cent yet)
Injustice Ultimate Edition - 8 (never played it before now so it's like a new game to me)
FIFA - 8
Madden - 5
Contrast - 6
Flower - 7 (game is a 10 but I already played it so I'm not going to go nuts over it all over again)

And while not games, per se, playroom makes my wife laugh like a maniac... and twitch integration is HUGELY awesome. UI needs some streamlining in design, but it's fast and that's my primary concern. PS camera is solid but underutilized.

Killzone: Beautiful, but boring (both SP and MP)
CoD: CoD (SP and MP)
Battlefield: awful (SP), unplayable (MP)
AC IV: AMAZING

I'm still really far behind on my 6 games (not including PS+ and F2P games) thanks to my first PS4 being delayed from Friday to Monday and then when it died on Wednesday I had to wait until today to start playing again.

That being said I've played about half of Knack and I would give it a 6.5/10 so far. People keep saying it doesn't really change much so that's what my final score will probably be in that case. It's a decent launch game.

I've played a few hours of AC4 as well but I haven't gotten nearly far enough in yet to give any kind of score. I haven't even reached the pirate stuff yet.

Knack - 7/10 with kids, 1/10 without kids
Killzone - 2/10
Madden - 7/10
NBA Live - 0/10
FIFA - 8/10
BF4 - 1/10 currently, 10/10 when it's working
AC4 - 7/10
Resogun - 9/10
Lego Marvel - 8/10
Contrast - 6/10

Man I've played a lot of games for a console launch!

Using a non-ridiculously inflated scoring system...

Killzone 6/10
Knack 6.5/10
Resogun 6.5/10

But if I was using the average journalists scoring system you may as well add a point or so on those. Knack is way underrated. It's repetitive but the controls are incredibly tight and the combat just works well. I enjoyed it more than Killzone, overall.

ACIV: 9/10
Killzone Shadow Fall: 8/10
NBA 2k14: 9/10
COD Ghosts: 6/10
Battlefield 4: 4/10 (Only because of all the crashing issues. Once fixed, 8/10)
Knack: 6/10
Resogun: 9/10

Still waiting for the UK-Store to launch, not bought much on US-Store

COD: Ghosts 6/10 - Story was okay, could tell its 1080p and some good action, but wasnt "amazing" - textures were a little flat, basically can tell its a 10year Old engine..... Multiplayer, definately better looking that PS3/360 but its COD, bored of it. I am going to trade in. (Only disc based game available in UK, until tomorrow)

Flower: 8-9/10 (So far) Absolutely stunning game, so colourful and happy joy joy... looking forward to delving deeper.

Warframe: 7/10 Pretty good so far, have only scratched the surface, so hopefully that score will go up, Good fun CO-OP game play. (is this game ONLY Co-op? Only a few missions in, decent visuals)

Fifa 14: 7/10 - Not much of a next gen leap, looks noticably sharper in 1080p, but not really pushing much extra visually, some better animations and crowd effects.

- Still to play a few more titles (available to me to judge a bit better)

Killzone--6
Knack--5.5
bf4--7(9 when they fix conquest)
ghosts--7.5
ac4--8
Contrast--5.5(amazing idea, setting, and overall art direction, really bad execution).

KZ - 8 - bumped up for multiplayer, hated single player
Knack - 6
BF4 - can't rate it until you can play it...
Resogun - 9 - needs tutorial or instructions, a ton of fun though
NFS Rivals - 7 - freezes on me more than any other game
Contrast - 5 - premise is neat, camera ruins the fun

Knack - 7/10 with kids, 1/10 without kids
Killzone - 2/10
Madden - 7/10
NBA Live - 0/10
FIFA - 8/10
BF4 - 1/10 currently, 10/10 when it's working
AC4 - 7/10
Resogun - 9/10
Lego Marvel - 8/10
Contrast - 6/10

Man I've played a lot of games for a console launch!

Really, Killzone 2/10 ?

Btw is Lego Marvel, worth a Next Gen purchase? (For an Adult)

Based on very early impressions. I haven't spent nearly enough time with any of these titles:

  1. Resogun - It is awesome and easily the game I spent the most time with.
  2. Call of Duty: Ghosts - Only because it is playable and what I've played of the MP isn't boring so far.
  3. Killzone: Shadow Fall - Very pretty but early moments of the campaign is a drag thus far.
  4. Battlefield 4 - This thing shouldn't even be on the list with all the issues surrounding it.

ACIV : 9
Knack : 7
NFS : 8
Killzone : 7
Resogun : 9.5

And yes, ACIV is that good. AC III was a turd, but Ubi's redeemed themselves with Black Flag, it's great.

The first few hours aren't I can say that much. But like I said I really need to get to the pirate stuff first.

Yeah it's still very much a hand-hold-y Ubisoft game. But once you get a few hours in and things open up it's really quite awesome.

Though I didn't hate the early stuff... which says something as well. Most AC games I never actually make it out of that 2-3 hour tutorial.

Resogun - 9
Contrast - 8
Knack - 8
KZ SF - 7.5
Lego Marvel - 5.5
Flower - 9
BF4 - 7.5 (could be higher later on)

AC IV is by far the best game I've played on this system, and probably my #2 game this year. Unfortunate it's not an exclusive, but it sure does look pretty on the PS4.

Killzone - 7/10
NBA2K14-8/10
BF4- EA can go fuck themselves/10

Killzone is beautiful, but like everyone else says really nothing special. 2K14 is amazing looking, and seemingly pretty deep, I'm awful at it currently, look forward to spending more time with it and figuring out how to be better.

Battlefield 4, bought it solely for 64 player carnage. I have not experienced any. Easily the most broken console game I have ever bought. I really hope BF4 does not mark a trend that it is acceptable to release a game on consoles in that state.

So far I have Killzone, Knack, Assassin's Creed IV, and Resogun.

I beat Killzone, and while it had some insanely frustrating moments, I think it was worth playing. There were some very cool moments in the campaign. Haven't played much multi yet.

I'm only on chapter 4 in Knack, but I'm definitely glad I picked it up. I'm having a lot of fun on Normal difficulty, and really enjoy the challenging combat scenarios. It's not a complicated game, but I think it's definitely worth playing for anyone who likes polished action gameplay. It kind of reminds me of a 3D version of old combat action platformers from the 8-bit and 16-bit days.

I've played ACIV the least (was waiting for the 1080p patch), but it seems really good. Looks brilliant, too. So far, it seems like they have already fixed a lot of my issues from ACIII.

Resogun is pretty awesome, too. I admit that this type of game is not something I spent a lot of time on, but I find myself booting it up frequently for quick play sessions.

Overall, I think all of the launch games I picked up are quite good, and I'm very satisfied with the initial lineup. I wouldn't say any of them are absolute must-plays, but if you want something to play on your new PS4, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. If I were to rate them using a scale where 5 is "OK," and anything above 6 is "good," I'd say they all range from 6 to 7, with ACIV possibly being higher depending on how it plays out.

Killzone campaign - 5/10 ( i really enjoyed previous killzone campaigns but this one is just horrid, confusing mess, tries to be like COD and falls right on its face)

Killzone Multiplayer - 9/10 ( really good fun, the idea of the challenges being like your level is refreshing, feels a lot like kz2 multiplayer which in my opinion is fantastic )

Resogun - 9.5/10 - Simply fantastic and i'm not even very good at it.

Contrast - 6/10 - good game but I find it tries too hard.

havent bought AC4 yet but looking forward to playing.

So far, i've only played Killzone SF, but today i'm starting AC: Black Flag.

KillzoneSF: 8 - SP is disappointing but MP is awesome!

Hate scores so I'm just gonna give impressions:

Contrast: Fun but not great. Not a huge platforming fan but it's interesting enough to keep me going.

Resogun: Was not expecting this game to be as fun as it is. Almost feel criminal that I didn't pay for it.

Battlefield 4: Servers are broke for conquest and it's d/c city, but hopefully that's temporary. No party based matchmaking system with no ability to host your own games is really a big minus. As for the gameplay: Playing Obliteration is a blast. Games can last as long as 90 minutes(Seriously, they need to make a time limit) going back and forth, huge amount of strategic combat, going through vehicles, driving the bomber all the way to the target point, it's all fun which makes the Server problem really tragic.

Killzone SF: Mostly done the Multiplayer, but the single player is not bad as far as shooters go so far. The Multiplayer feels like Battlefield without vehicles and more impressive abilities. The biggest minus here is that the game usually devolves into one team camping the other team's 3 spawn exits. Hilariously enough, I actually like Killzone Mercenary's(Vita) online better than shadow fall's as things stand. Another minus is that the join with party system is pretty silly, a 30 second window to join with your party is far from ideal. What really ticks me off though is that there's no in game chat, so if you're going in with randoms there's no way to communicate in a very objective based game. This is extremely obnoxious when you're going against a team that's obviously fully premade when you're going it alone.

ACIV = 9/10
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes = 8.5/10
NBA 2K14 = 8/10
Killzone = 8/10
Battlefield 4 = haven't played it yet.
COD: Ghosts = 5/10
Resogun = 8/10
Contrast = 7.5/10
Flower = 8/10
NFS: Rivals haven't played it as well.
