PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

So the combo of SSHD and 7200rpm sounds like the fastest possible loafing times you can get on the PS4...really a shame that 750GB is as big as it gets.

The best solution would probably be a fast SSD with a large external USB 3.0 HDD. If only Sony would add support for the latter... :-/

If I had to bet, I'd expect support for external drives earlier than 2TB SSDs/SSHDs.

I can say I noticed a huge difference with zone changes in FFXIV on PS4 when I swapped in the Samsung 256GB SSD. The downside is, I will have to rotate out which digital games I have loaded often, but the loadtime difference is pretty notable.

SO the benchmark that was posted.... what I got from it is that the Samsung Spinpoint M9T which is found in Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB, is faster then the stock-drive...correct?

Can someone tell me roughly how much faster? I'm just happy it is just as fast as the stock-drive and has 2TB, however any improvements over the stock one is always welcome.

Benchmark: http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_spinpoint_m9t_hard_drive_review

I have this drive and just loaded up the last of us remastered at the Safehouse section and it took 36 seconds. Extrapolate that however compared to everyone else's load times. This was the PSN version, BTW.

As I noted in the previous page, I noticed a speed increase in icons loading in the OS as well as general OS use compared to the PS4s stock drive. Can't say a whole lot for load times between games since I've only really played the last of us so far and I never played that on my stock hard drive.

The Momentus XL is the 2nd fastest on average to the Samsung Evo despite the strange results for TLOU. It's just that the XL is hard to find, still around $140. While the Evo is around $430. You'll pay more for that extra 5 to 20 seconds load install times. Both are great drives. 3rd place is the Hitachi Travelstar 7k1000 HDD. It's great because it's only $70 and relatively fast.

The 5400 RPM Samsung Spinpont m9t was the slowest compared to the 7200 RPM drives it was benched marked against. They didn't benchmark it against a stock HDD 5400 RPM drive. So, I don't know how they compare. I'd say on par with each other. If space is what you need, then the 2TB is the way to go. But it is one of the slowest drives.

Here's the link. But you can't get it until 4 days from now.

What do you think is faster between the 7200 Travelstar HDD and the 5400 Seagate 1TB SSHD?

I'd say it depends on how many games you play at once. If you like to bounce back and forth a lot I'd recommend the Travelstar. Otherwise you'll never really take advantage of the 8GB cache. I bounce around with my titles and did the tests early on. It works wonders if you stick to one or two titles.

That sounds pretty good, as long as it is on par with the stock PS4 drive, however I don't doubt this drive is a bit faster, I will do some tests when it arrives.

Yeah I know it was compared to 7200RPM drives, what I meant with that link was to take those speed tests and see if there is a similar benchmark for the stock PS4 drive and then compare.

Also the above link you posted is not a good deal as you can get the same drive for $99.95 from this link:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I will do some tests with the few games I have on PS4 when the drive arrives and post in this topic as it seems like a great drive to upgrade if all you want is storage and similar or slightly better performance then the stock drive.

If I had to bet, I'd expect support for external drives earlier than 2TB SSDs/SSHDs.

I just remembered that the PS4 has no back USB ports, as it should have if it had been developed with future external storage support in mind. Together with the fact that the PS3 does not support external storage, the odds for external storage support on the PS4 might be worse than I thought. :-/

I'll be playing mostly just Destiny for a long time, so it sounds like the caching abilities of the 1TB SSHD might be more beneficial to me versus the faster spinning 1TB 7200 rpm HDD...right?

Tom's Hardware didn't find that replaying the same game over and over again did much of anything to improve loading times on an SSHD. As such, I've felt like a 7200rpm HDD is more a guaranteed win. That is just my personal stance, though.

It's not super clean but you have to modify anything...

Solution A:
SATA->ESATA+docking station (this one only supports HDDs up to 2,5TB)

Solution B:
HDD+external power supply

I just had to bend the cover a little bit

I've been doing some testing with two disks to try to determine which one to use in my PS4. I thought I'd share my results with you to give people an idea of differences and what to expect. Each test was run once. The SSHD was only tested on first load. I've seen very little improvements when loading the same thing a second time on the PS4, so the SSD cache might be too small to make a real difference.

Not very scientific, but at least this test has the exact same scenarios applied to both disks, so maybe it's of some use.

I've posted earlier in the thread about TLOU loading slower from the SSD than the SSHD, but that seems to differ depending on the save game used. The SSD is 10 seconds slower when loading the bedroom at the very beginning of the game, but clearly faster when loading The Slums.

Interesting and definitely useful to those looking at SSDs for their PS4.

I'm more curious about SSHD speed vs. 7200rpm...not a ton of comparison out there.

Pete Dodd's test today shows the SSHD down to the stock drive is about the same as the jump from SSHD to SSD. I would bet the 7200 is way closer to the SSHD than stock obviously, but not above.

Just ordered the 1TB Seagate SSHD.

Any USB enclosure recommendations? Could I use the stock PS4 HDD with my Xbox One? If so, do I have to reformat it via PC first?

Friends! I am in need of a larger harddrive. Rather than search through this thread... can someone be kind enough to simply recommend me a hard drive. I would like to think 1 TB should be enough... but if you think it's better to get more, than just say so.

Thanks :)

Does the SSHD really make a difference?
Already had to delete some stuff to install Diablo 3 and TLOU, so I'll be looking for a bigger drive in no time.

But still debating if I should get 1TB SSHD or 2TB HDD

I feel sorry for that cable sticking out. Those fans throw out some really hot air when the system really gets going. I would probably route it through the top side (if you stand it up) of the system if it were an option.

Thanks. I have trying to decidebetween that one and the Seagate 1TB SSHD. The linked I removed was for a 2.5 inch 7200rpm 2TB internally drive. It says it won't fight laptops(and most likely PS4 either.

This is the one I like at first, that doesn't fits.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00COFNBPA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I am leaning towards the one you listed, but I would really prefer a faster one.

Yes all you have to do is take it out of the case and put it into the ps4 According to this article

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-how-to-cheaply-upgrade-your-ps4-to-2tb

Looking to do this tomorrow! Should arrive tomorrow hopefully.
If anyone has done this, has anyone noticed if there is a speed increase or not?
Don't really care so much, more an issue of capacity > speed for me, but a little increase would be nice.

Also off topic... Is it possible to get a 7200rpm 2TB 2.5" HDD yet? Or even SSHD?
Would like a 2TB HDD in my laptop eventually, but my existing 1TB HDD is 7200rpm, so don't really want to step down from that.

When you upgrade your PS4 HDD how do you transfer all your data to the new Drive? Thanks!

Don't think its possible yet sadly... When I did it the first time, all I could do was back up my save data, any downloaded games must be re-downloaded again I'm afraid...

EDIT: Oops, sorry about the double post...meant to edit first post.

well the hdd is outside already...so in reality there's only mobo in there producing heat alongside the bluray, although most games don't use bluray anymore and just installs fully.

So I've pre-ordered the Destiny PS4 bundle which will be available next week and I want to upgrade the HDD from the get-go.
The HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB one seems to me like a really good choice. What are your experiences with that HDD, is it really as good as everyone claims?

And I've also already downloaded that PS4UPDATE.PUP (around 800mb).
Is this all I need for the HDD swap?

Does anyone have any recommendations for drives that are on sale this labor day weekend in the US that would fit the PS4 and PS3? I'd prefer 1TB for my PS3 and possibly more if reasonably priced for the PS4 or alternatively I could temporarily put the 500gb from the PS4 into the PS3 and put a 1TB in the PS4 until prices come down on 2TB drives...

I purchased one two weeks ago and I'm really happy with it.

Thinking about upgrading. Don't remember if it was ever confirmed that the PS4 can hold a 12.5 mm HDD. Anyone here that have installed a 12.5 mm drive?

I could not find another thread more appropriate, please post a link if there is a thread regarding PS4 HDD exchange instead of only speed.

I bought a 2TB drive this weekend and plan to install it the coming weekend. What is the best way to do this transition? Is my planned approach correct or have I missed anything?
Do I have to do some kind of synchronization before I begin?

I have a EU, US and UK account.

My plan is to:

1. Log in to each account and deactivate the PS4 in settings.
2. Replace Drive.
3. Do I have to reinstall the firmware?
4. Log in with my EU PSN account, activate as primary device. Go to library and download all my content/apps.
4.2 Repeat with US PSN Account
4.3 Repeat with UK PSN Account, I only use UK account for streaming apps like BBC.

Anything else? Are there any apps or content that wont show up in the library?

Any considerations regarding games that "require" accounts or logins? Like Pinball Arcade?

Should I make a list of all my content before I do all of the above?

I only have one physical game disc, Assasins Creed 4. Anything to consider regarding physical games or will they just reinstall in the background when I play them?

bumping it yet again and adding another question:

Does the higher speed help with object pop in and texture loading?

I'm contemplating upgrading the default HDD to this:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236561

It's the newer version of PBKT. Should I be concerned with the other 16 MB cache amount? Is it still a good performer or is there a suitable alternative?

Don't worry about 16MB vs 32MB for HDD. The most important is that you're using a 7200RPM drive vs a 5400RPM drive (the non-SSHD version). Good find on the WD BLACK SERIES 750GB. Only $67! I used to use the WD Black for my PCs. Been using the WD 750GB Momentus XT SSHD since the PS3 days. but they are hard to find and $150 for 750GB. :(

If you're worried about object pop in and texture loading go with the Samsung Evo SSD.

Ref: hard disk drive (HDD), a solid state drive (SSD), or a solid state hybrid drive (SSHD).
