PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

So without reading through all the pages, has there been a consensus for which HD to replace your PS4 HD with? I want to grab one this week. Looking for more space, quicker loads, but I don't want the risk of overheating, etc. Not looking to spend $500.

I'll try and update tomorrow.

While the times we have so far for game launches are great, they are only getting to the menu. I'd be interested in any times for games that take some time to get from the menu to actually playing.

Would a better hard drive improve "pop in" in BF4? I've noticed it, is this a slow hard drive issue?

Just quoting myself.. now I notice after I've been running the drive for few days, is that cold boot still 9 seconds, but standby seems about the same now, 9 seconds.
Must be because of the cashing system the SSD part uses. Strange its the same for both now. Still would of thought standby should be faster.

You can copy save data to USB or to the cloud. And honestly you'd probably be better off doing that anyway, the PS3 DID allow everything but it'd take unfathomably long to backup everything and was prone to blowing up the backup just before finishing, so it was more practical to delete everything that isn't a save or similarly unique then doing a relatively fast backup/restore. Similar may well hold here if they allow backups, even if everything IS snappier it's not like you have to wait forever on a download to play a game, especially if they iron out the issues that are there by the time you sorely need to upgrade storage.

And I deleted my Knack cache and the saves are still there albeit shuffled under "other", so I think we're clear. I did it under system storage management though rather than the main screen, someone brave (or no issues redownloading via Plus) will need to verify if deleting from the home menu is safe or not for saves.

Seriously though, what does that stand for (when referring to HDDs)?

As much as I'd love a SSD, they're too expensive for me to buy one to put into the PS4 I want to eventually get. No way I'm spending $900+ overall (PS4+1TB SSD) just for faster load speeds and possibly reduced pop-in.
 
Is there any word on the WD SSHD that was supposed to come out this year? Was going to put the Seagate SSHD in to my PS4 but now I'm thinking about waiting for new models if they come soon-ish.

Someone should test it with a fresh drive. I don't want to have to re-download and install all my games.

I got the Seagate 1TB Hybrid and also advised a good friend on it. Very impressed with the performance of the drive.

If you're not going SSD, my vote is for the 1TB ST1000LM014. Download Warframe and join a game. It has a progress bar for everyone who is in the game and their loading status. My bar pretty much always fills up faster than anyone else's.
 
Just pulled the trigger on a Seagate ST1000LM014. Amazon UK sold out but one of their Fulfilled vendors had just 10 left in stock. Seen enough comparisons online now to form the opinion that an SSHD hybrid drive is the best compromise. Near SSD speeds, still much faster than the normal HDD, but considerably cheaper than the SSD too.

I realise the 1TB version has a 5400rpm spindle, whilst the 750GB version has a 7200rpm spindle, but the 1TB version also has double the cache, and is a newer drive, so I opted for that instead. An extra 250GB storage can't hurt either.


EDIT: See post below, swapped to a HITACHI Travelstar 7K1000 1TB 7200rpm (32mb buffer) instead.
 
I've just ordered a ST1000LM014 figured if nothing else I am guarenteed better speeds and more capacity than the stock HDD and if something else comes out much better in the next year I haven't wasted much money.
 
I grabbed myself a 1TB HGST 7K1000. A lot of places online didn't have it in stock, but mine came from Pixmania within 2 days with free UPS shipping (UK).

As much as I love an SSD (my PC will never go without one for a boot drive), there's no way I'm paying more than the cost of the PS4 itself for 1TB's worth of storage. Now I just have to sit on my hands until next Friday...
 
Wondering if I should swap my Seagate 1TB ST1000LM014 order with a 1TB HGST 7K1000 or not. SSHD or 7200rpm...hmmm...Price wise there's only £15 in it. But I'm wondering if the SSHD caching will improve speeds over time as it figures out which things to cache and which things not to.

It's really quite a tough decision...

EDIT: Just pulled the trigger on the 1TB Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 as well lol. I'll decide which to keep and which to cancel later, but I can see these drives are selling out fairly quick so I'm grabbing one while I can.

Yeah, i noticed a lot of them are getting low on stock and I want to make sure I have mine ready.

I ordered ST1000LM014.

Hopefully a few more drives will be tested soon, so I can see if I made the right choice :)

Yeah, they're both fulfilled by amazon too which makes returning them much easier. I may just order both as well, seeing as stock is getting very low.

I'd love to see some testing numbers on this one. I'm contemplating between this and the 500GB Seagate hybrid drive - both of which go for about $75.

7200RPM vs hybrid, that's the question. Of course the Western Digital has the advantage of an extra 250GB as well.

The 7200RPM hybrids are tempting, but reading around their failure rate seems extremely high.

I just cancelled my ST1000LM014 order. Will be sticking with the 7K1000 for now. A part of me just feels more secure in knowing I'll have a constant 7200rpm instead of a 8GB SSD/5400rpm split that will be managed without my control. I used a 7200rpm drive in my PS3 without ever having a problem, so there's that too.

I feel the same - that's how I'm leaning, but I'd sure like to see some numbers. It's odd none of these outlets decided to put a 7200RPM in their tests. Although I'm sure they're coming.

I already have the 7K1000 ordered, which will take additional days to ship apparently.

Wish we had more info to compare the two.
 
I don't know if I should get the HGST 7K1000 or the 5K1500...

Any speed test with the 5K1500?

I want to go all digital with the PS4, and I dont know if the +1800rpm > +500Gb
