PS4: Install from disk, then use Digital Download?

So kind of an obscure question. I own the DD version of the Last of Us, and will be getting a new PS4 on Boxing Day. Now my bro will getting a physical copy of the Last of Us for Christmas. Can I use his disk to install the game and then continue to use it without the disk seeing as I own the digital version. Only reason I ask is I have abysmal internet speed and download quota in Aus.
 
On One this works for sure. I've recently replaced several disc games with the digital version and no download was required.
 
Final fantasy 14 did this.... by cheating and including a download code. But the game and case feel like a waste, I like having it on my shelf as much as the next guy but part of the appeal of physical is I can lend and sell my games.
 
This is definitely an area I'd like to see improvement. I bought the digital version of Rocksmith and had to delete the disc version, download the digital version, and then redownload each one of the 100+ DLC tracks I've bought for the game.
 
Won't work. I had a physical copy of Dishonored that I installed from. Then, I traded it in when I got the digital version. It made me delete the entire install and reinstall with the DD. It's not like a "key" that allows you to play an installed disc version.
 
ITT: You're not allowed to call something impractical or slow if there's something else that another person may have an opinion of being more impractical or slow.


I don't know if that's how statements of opinion works guys.
 
In addition to this, is this why after sending back my rental copy of Dishonored 2, deleting it and reinstalling a new boxed copy after buying it few weeks later, that I can't download my cloud saves?

"Cannot download. This application data is not installed"

Don't really want to start again.
 
I did this with both God of War Remastered and Arkham Knight and both worked fine but then I bought Second Son and Kill Zone and while I didn't need to download them again the digital versions can't see the retails' saves so it's a bit of a mine field.

That could be a case of region encoding. Saves and DLC aren't compatible across regions for all games.
 
While the current PS4 firmware doesn't support this, I see no reason why this couldn't change in the future.

The game files themselves are in most cases identical, though there will be minor changes depending on SKU publisher.

If both versions use the same publisher code for the PS4 "header files", it would be theoretically possible for the OS to just cross-reference this and boot up the game. The disc checking procedure is entirely done on the OS side as the game files don't do this.
 
I downloaded Until Dawn from PSN and then got the disc version as a gift. When I put the disc in and started the game, it prompted me whether I want to replace the digital version with the disc version or not. I chose to replace it with the disc version and as far as I can tell, it didn't need to reinstall anything from the disc, updates were kept, nothing changed. I'm not sure how it works if things are the other way around though, OP.

Thanks. I thought it might be something to do with this. I'm in the UK, so you can take a good strong guess as to the rental firm in question. They must be using copies from other regions.

Looks like I'm starting a high chaos run through of Dishonored 2. It took me 12 hours on a stealthy one just to get from the start topast the clockwork mansion.
 
I ran into this problem with Destiny. I had the original on disc and all of the DLC except Rise of Iron. Bought the collection on PSN which includes the original and all of the DLC. I had to delete the entire game and then redownload everything which took over a day due to slow PS speeds.

OP is trying to save on his data cap by installing from disk instead of redownloading to their new console. Backups and transfers make that question moot.
 
When I was just browsing the PS Store I noticed that Rise of the Tomb Raider (which I currently have the disc version installed) did not read "buy" but "unlock game".

Of course I did not buy it so I don't know if this would unlock the installed game but it certainly reads like it.

This is like the only part of XB1 installs that doesn't feel like it was designed by people who hate fun. Ran across it randomly as I was bemoaning the thought of dealing with an excruciating reinstall of a game I had rented previously.

It comes from the fact that originally there was to be no difference between a disk game and a digital game. Both were considered digital games, just that the disk version allowed you to install from the disk. That feature required the 24 hour check in which got axed after an uproar, but the base idea that a digital and disk game were the same persisted at some level.

The other way to do this is use PSX Download helper to get the urls to the game when is starts to download to your ps4 then shoot over to an internet cafe that has superfast d/l speed or a library and download the game onto a external.

Then use PSX Download helper to transfer from the external over to your ps4.

It's been a while, but wasn't it the same on 360 after they started to let people install games? If you installed the disc, you didn't need to download the entire game again, just the unlock key?

Wow, everyone just wants me here to throw the ball, but sorry, what I meant is it is slow and inpractical in general! The X1 is slow too, but it does perform better then the PS4 OS.

The PS store being an app you have to run is a pain in the ass, not to mention every second purchase I make just freezes out, and I have to restart the whole fucking console to be able to just buy a game! The Layout is terrible, somewhat better with folders, but still messy.
When a game is running both PS4 and X1 are just as much slow and useless, but when nothing is running the X1 at least performs okay, but the PS4 still slows down, gets stuck in menus, holy shit how much time I have wasted in watching those damned shapes changing forever...
Not to mention games like Overwatch of Doom keep chrashing every second hour or so, while the only game that has crashed for me on X1 is Skyrim nad becuse of the mods mostly.

And before you guys come at me being a fanboy, I'm not, or at least not these consoles. (I do love the SNES with a passion) This is pure experience. I still love thoe PS exclusive games, and the X1 exclusives, that's why I have both.

Your PS4 sounds broken
 
I find this strange as you can do this on X1. It will simply convert whatever the executable is to the digital version. Heck, it even let's me download and install games that my friend has installed from disc, without me having the disc. Of course I would need the disc if I decide to launch the game or I would need to buy the digital license. An example of this would be:
Friend buys a physical copy of NBA 2k17 and installs it. I have a copy of my profile on his X1 and he has a copy of his on mine
On my X1 the NBA 2k17 will show up for install without the disc
I can install it, but to play it I would need his physical disc or I would have to buy the digital license
The benefit of this is great as we we go back and forth for game night between houses. This means when he comes over he does not have to install the game, just put the disc in and go and the X1 cloud saves will pull down the save. We do buy a lot of digital games though so we can game share.
I think this is something Sony will fix, as it should be easy to do. Plus it would help us out as we also play on PS4 and usually play FIFA on it.
 
This issue blew my mind when psvr came out because I installed the demo from disc at first. Was real mad I had to delete 40gb game just to install again

I have a PS4 Pro, X1S, and WiiU. The PS4 OS is the fastest of the 3. I Prefer the X1S style dashbaord, but even I know the PS4 XMB, as dated as it looks, is so much faster than the Xbox One dashboard. WiiU is not too slow either, but feels even more dated than the PS4 XMB.

No I'm not, literally my first words were addressing what OP asked for, and then I added my opinion which was connected to this, because this is one impractical thing on the OS.

May be, I wouldn't know, because my friends also agree on the "slowness" and the PS store freezing out, however they don't have games crashing like I do..
