PS4 is the Fastest Selling Console in Australian History

Riiiight

Btw, anecdotal talk coming up, but I was at BigW and I did notice that COD: AW was sold out on PS3, PS4, one copy of 360 version and a pile Xbox One versions.

Do you notice the little notes at the bottom following a *, ** or *** ?
Those are called references, as in they refer to the sources for those statements. So whether you like it or not, that's the way it is.
Plus I'm pretty sure it's illegal in Australia for company executives to make false or misleading statements. I'm pretty sure if Microsoft tried half of their NPD PR spin in Australia they'd have the ACCC so far up their ass they'd be choking on them.

That's two - can you make it to three?

Can add that as a new Ozbrit I'm loving the low cost of games thanks to DS. I'm merrily converting the $55 games back to sterling & smiling about it.

Yeah I saw something about this a while back. I think it was a different article though

Basically until we get confirmation otherwise I would assume Australia is something like PS4 > XB1 > Wii U, sales-wise so much like the rest of the world

Can't remember how well Wii U is doing there though

Based on this anecdotal evidence, I can safely say with 95% confidence that not a single person owns a Wii U in Australia.

Well Ironically I know 6 people who own Wii U's (I am one of them), 4 who own Xbox One's (Again I am part of this) and 2 people who own PS4`s. One of my best mates actually put a PS4 on hold last week but he too may yet buy an Xbox One instead due to the crazy deals going down here at the moment.

What's even weirder is that I was close to buying a PS4 earlier this year but bought an Xbox for Titanfall but will more than likely eventually trade it in for a PS4 anyway.

It's a press release OP. No reason not to include the whole thing -

As Australian gaming and entertainment providers gear up for the busiest sales period of the year, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia is today celebrating a huge milestone, with PlayStation®4 named as the fastest selling home video games console of all time in Australia*.

Announced today at PlayFest, this achievement comes in advance of PlayStation celebrating its 20th anniversary in the Australian market in early 2015, and proves the PlayStation® brand continues to be the favourite place to play for Australian gamers. In addition to being the fastest selling home console in Australian history, PS4™ retains the number one next-gen console leadership position**, according to data from NPD Group Australia.

Further to the reception it has received from Australian gamers since its release, PS4 has been a significant driver in category growth since its release. According to Luis Gil, The NPD Group Australia, "the Console Hardware category in Australia has more than doubled in value since release of 8th Generation Hardware in 2013. PS4 accounted for a substantial 44% of the total category value since its launch***".

"As PlayStation powers into its twentieth year in Australia, we couldn't be happier with our position with PS4 at the top spot of the interactive entertainment industry," said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand. "I've watched this business grow over the 20 years and have had the pleasure of being part of the monumental change in innovation and category growth; of which PlayStation has historically been a key driver of. PS4 is now the fastest selling home console in Australian history and this reflects the passion of our players, our partners and the quality of the PlayStation offer."

Critical to the PlayStation experience is the best-in-class technology that underpins it. With social connectivity at the heart of PS4, the evolution of its system software brings together new ways to interact with the global community. The recent release of System Software 2.0 reinforces these specifications, with a focus on innovative gaming experiences including Share Play which allows a PlayStation Plus member to invite a friend who owns a PS4 to join them on the virtual sofa. In addition, there is continued personalisation that includes the introduction of a USB Music Player, themes, home screen colours, voice control and a dedicated YouTube app.

Showing a clear commitment to The Players, PS4 offers an unparalleled software line-up for the festive season which includes SingStar™ Ultimate Party, DRIVECLUB™, Minecraft™ PS4 Edition, Far Cry® 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, Assassin's Creed®: Unity, Call of Duty®: Advanced Warfare and LittleBigPlanet™ 3, offering something for everyone in the family. In early 2015 highly anticipated and exclusive titles continue with The Order: 1886™, Bloodborne™ and Until Dawn™.

SCE Australia continues to expand its innovative PlayStation ecosystem with the introduction PlayStation TV nationwide on November 14th. A partnership with Yahoo!7 will also see a dedicated PLUS7 app go live for PS4 later this year.

The interesting thing is that in Australia? The PS4 is the expensive console.

How did this happen? Well Sony chose to price gouge an extra $50 at launch over the xbox one. Since then, price drops and bundles have consistently pushed the xbox one as the "cheaper option" (you have to sort of work out the game pricing, but the positioning is obvious).

While I hate that Sony did the extra goouging, you can't really argue with results...

Well done Australia :)

Australia representing very well! However I still have not migrated over to either ps4 or xbo as yet. I hope to by christmas, but it could be christmas 2015-16

It wasn't when the Bone had mandatory Kinect.

The xbox one was more expensive ($50) for a very short period. Then it dropped to ... umm parity I suppose. From there extra games were bundled to make it "cheaper".

The point is Sony have a heck of a lot of wriggle room if they ever feel like moving lower.

Yeah but places like Dicksmith had crazy sales on PS4's. They'd have cheaper PS4's on their Ebay store when Ebay had a 20% off day. So they'd sell like 1000 of them in 24 hours.

CONGRATS to SONY.

When the original PS3 slim arrived, sales went up 400%. Yeah we like our Sony products.

I earned this decal as well as another secret goodie when I pre-ordered my Launch PS4

And a thank you letter.

Why is Crash Bandicoot on my PS4?

I vaguely remember reptilescorpio saying they sold like 2500 in less than 24hrs or something on their eBay store alone. I could be wrong but i am right about Dick Smith killing in when it comes to PS4 stuff.

Yeah, I think you're right now that you mention it. That's INSANE for one day!

Why would someone wants to buy BOTH Ghosts and Advanced Warfare? :P

That's two - can you make it to three?

If you're referring to how many times I've been suckered in this thread it's actually only one. The first one I knew what was going on, I just didn't express the intent with an emoticon. :P

Nah, how many people poimandres suckered before he buckled to confess :)

You are right there. I couldn't pass up the $400 offer and the odd $20 game really helps.

Good point, but buying two Assassin's creed games is also a quick path to madness.

What is the second fastest selling console there? PS2, PS3 or Wii? Any chance Xbox One or Xbox 360 to be one of top 5 fastest selling console there?

Something doesn't sound right. What about the PS2?

Here's some data on other consoles: "The Wii sold 200,000 units in 50 weeks, beating the previous record holders--the Sony PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS--which both took 55 weeks to reach that mark.... it took the Xbox 360 roughly 68 weeks (or 17 months) to reach 200,000 in sales"

Lol. Made even more funny that I work with 2 kiwi blokes lol.

2?

The construction site I worked on was full of Kiwi's. It was more like spot the Aussie. The running joke was 'NZ has three Islands, North, South and Curtis.' (Curtis being where the construction was)

NZ might as well count for Australia though, we're basically sibling Nations.

More than the wii? Any numbers for context?

This.

Wii sold embarrassingly huge figures in Australia for a console. I remember remotes were extremely rare and nunchuck attachments were on 6 month back order! The Wii was also $399 with a game where as PS4 is $599 with a game.

Come on NPD, where's the numbers.

Im glad I contributed, ive also noticed brand new games are now coming out between $65 -$80 ! I still cant believe cod aw is $64 right now for us Australians! Thats like a price of a 8 month old game !

AUD65, that's about 35GBP, the kind of money ps3 games settled down to here. Haven't really been into a Game or whatever recently, but I doubt we have much in the way of 35 quid day one prices on top current gen titles. Same kinds of prices for bone and wiiu day 1 titles there? They seem even cheaper than US prices, happy days for the aussies at last considering prices friends have had to put up with as little as a few months ago.

I have no Xbone bros in Australia, but a few PS4 bros.

Something doesn't sound right. What about the PS2?

The population has increased by over 20% since the year 2000, which might have something to do with it. Also, a higher percentage of people now have grown up with games. It's normal for a 40 year old to buy a console these days - not so much in the year 2000. A 40 year old typically has disposable income and PS4 launched at a good price point.

Did NPD Australia ban everyone from disclosing numbers or something?

Basically, yeah. Same reason we don't get details on US sales aside from the odd milestone from platform holders when they decide to.

Where? It was still $99 on Aus PSN last night, that's why I got it from the US store.
Pretty sure it was one of the $55 posted pre-order deals from Dick Smith. Launch retail copies were $6x too.

Next round of retail deals are for the insane week of 13th to the 20th. Dick Smith has Assassins Creed Unity, GTA 5, WWE 2015, Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition for $59 pickup each.
With the dropping AUD it's becoming a better and better deal to buy retail, at least while Dick Smith are keeping everyone competitive.

Thx for the info rep, I don't have any physical PS4 games yet but at those prices I think I'm gonna start a collection.

Holy shit, thanks for this information. Next game I was getting was GTA5 so this helps me out heaps.

PS4 has more margin on it for the retailer. I'm not sure why or who decides it but when I was working casual sales at one of the big electronics retailers XB1 had a cost price for the store of about $530, there was only $20 of profit in each console sale. PS4 had a cost price of about $520, and $80 of profit in the sale.

Which is super odd cheezcake as my local EB has been pimping the X1 super hard ever since it was announced last year! Always thought it would be better for them financially to push the PS4 harder due to the markup on the US price.

I've gone all digital on Vita but the insanely cheap retail prices brought about by Dick Smith on PS4 games means it's usually a lot cheaper to buy retail.

If only Dick Smith sold Vita games! :(

Holy shit, thanks for this information. Next game I was getting was GTA5 so this helps me out heaps.

No probs! The dispatch from Dick Smith can be spotty, they post out day before release by Star Track courier who are fantastic and overnight but sometimes DSE don't get stock on time. I had to wait 5 days after release for my pre-order of Diablo 3, same with Driveclub which was a few days late.

Pick up instore is perfect though lol

I had to wait for my Diablo 3 order too from Dick Smith, but my order for Driveclub shipped the day before release and I received it on launch day.
