PS4 Primary Account Taken - Please Please Help

We should sticky a 2Factor post or something. It's incredible how months after that was enabled people still haven't activated it on their account.

This is said in every thread. I actually think it would be a good idea...

STICKY!!: IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON ANY HARDWARE OF ANY TYPE TURN ON 2 FACTOR SECURITY (if available) TO PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNT OR YOU'LL BE BANNED FROM GAF

Ok...maybe not banned, but ridiculed at that point. Haha

I should have done it sooner, but I just setup 2 factor authentication. There are way too many threads on GAF about this.

Change your PSN password immediately and enable 2FA. With that you make sure that the other PS4 cannot access your stuff or log in online anymore. You can still play your stuff when being online, but I guess you have to wait for the half a year period or for the customer support.

It shows the possibility of the 2014 Gmail/Bitcoin incident may have gotten my account compromised. But I have 2 step verification on that account.

Security professionals call this "Collateral damage." When a data breach is discovered (e.g. Yahoo) a password reset is forced upon every user and the host account is re-secured. But the data breach has a knock-on effect on other online services because, despite warnings, a high percentage of people re-use the same credentials on multiple websites.

If you visit any hacker forum you can observe this process in action. A fresh email/password dump is provided and members begin sifting through the data looking for paired accounts. Amazon, Origin, Netflix, PSN... anything they can monetize.

EDIT: I just took this screen capture to demonstrate the point.

I will not provide the web address for obvious reasons, but there are lots of forums that engage in this kind of activity.

Hey Guys,

First off, any help or input on this is appreciated.

Two weeks ago I came home and fired up my system to play some rocket league. I was then met with a lock symbol on the games icon on the dashboard. Shortly after investigating I found that my account isn't the primary account on my system. I haven't activated it on any other console and do not share my password with anyone (strong password by all regards).

After a quick online search I found that you can log on to the Sony site and deactivate all active consoles under your account. While trying that option I was met with a complication. Under the de-activation button it said something to the extent of "You have deactivated your account in the last 6 months and the option is unavailable at this time".

With no luck on the console or online to get my account back to my PlayStation as the primary I reached out to Sony support.

The first thing I did was get on the chat support on the main site. The assistant on the other side was absolutely terrible. They did not want to be there doing their job at all. With every sentence I typed to explain the situation he gave me a link to reset my password or do something I was trying to explain that I already did. After each link he would dismiss me and ask if he could do anything else and to have a great day, giving me like 5 seconds to type what I needed to say. Eventually he just left before I could type out my explanation.

0/10 for the chat support Sony, truly a terrible experience.

I then called the Sony support, after waiting 55 minutes I was greeted. I explained my situation and the rep understood what happened and was trying every avenue to help me that he had. He seemed to be VERY helpful, knowledgeable and nice. But as it turns out he was unable to fix it and had to escalate the issue. (To who idk, maybe the Sony Gods). I'm not an idiot and asked for all the information I could possibly get on these people and how they could contact me. After confirming my email for a ticket number he then explained that I would be contacted within 48 hours with a solution to the issue.

I waited 48 hours. I waited 5 days..... Still NOTHING. Not even the confirmation email that I was supposed to get 15 mins after the call.

10/10 for customer service.... 0/10 for Follow-up on the issue.

So guys, I am truly lost on how to get my account back. If you know of any tips, tricks or success stories please share them. I'd love to try again.

Right now, I think I'll just have to delete everything off my console. Make a new username. Pay to access to PS plus network and pay to download all the games that were previously free on PS Plus.

But, I've had my username/gamertag for about over 10 years through the consoles, I would love to save it and the cash in my pocket.

Has anyone beat this already?

I beat this a few weeks ago. Went to use the primary ps4 in my household and had the same situation you had down to the escalation and someone getting back in touch with me. I called in again and they said they had already deactivated everything and for me to go and try to reactivate my primary, which worked. Also, I already had 2FA enabled and had just changed all my info recently.

Changing your pw is a great idea obviously, but just to note that when you do set up 2FA there's a logout option for all devices so the guy wouldn't be able to get back in anyway.

Not that hard. 2FA isn't perfect. They don't need to access your phone, just spoof your SIM card, which is fairly easy to do. You can buy empty SIM cards ready to do some spoofing.

2FA was invented because people are dumb and aren't using strong and unique passwords everywhere, if you use the same password everywhere, there will be time when not even 2FA will help you.

Uh now are they gonna find where I live to intercept communication to/from my cell (to get my SIM #)? Or are they gonna hack the phone company?

It actually becomes easier to murder someone than do that... But there are phishing techniques for 2FA.

I second this.

I know its not the job of Neogaf Mods to provide this information as a sticky but given how many of these types of threads we keep seeing, just a simple stickied thread at the top of the gaming forum would hopefully help a lot more people find out about how to enable it.

Any chance a mod can chime in and see what they think about it?
We seem to see these types of threads on a daily, if not bi-daily basis at this point and its always upsetting to read that the user just didnt know about "FA or didnt enable it.
