Looks like faith to me but others will definitely see it differently
I have the exact same setup, UHD discs show off this TV unlike anything I've seen before.

All those advancements and 4k streaming has barely even really caught up to a 1080p Blu ray if at all. There's still a pretty big gap between digital distribution and a physical disc. That's not even factoring in audio quality either.

You comparing Blu-ray which was new format 10 years and in fight with HD-DVD ago and UHD which is based already on established media and technology. LOL! And if you think that UHD is adopting faster than Blu-ray back then, you're goddamn delusional.

If you guys really care about owning a quality UHD player over everything why would you buy the Xbox One S for its UHD player when there are way better UHD players out there?

Pretty clear most people here don't ONLY care about owning a UHD player. This is a gaming forum after all. Personally, I've never really noticed a big difference between using different devices that play the same media format (visual media, I'm more into audio). But in terms of what the prioriries would be/what will have the biggest impact on the overall viewing experience... TV > Format (DVD, Blu-Ray, UHD etc) > Quality of the player itself.
But XB1S is the best "bag for your buck" player out there anyway isn't it?

People care about the quality of the 4K footage. Not the quality of the player.
The cost efficient way to get that done is the XB1S 500 gb model, not to mention that if Sony forces you to buy another device, you might as well use that opportunity to gain access to the XB catalogue.

Most people here wouldn't be able to tell differences and care more about bang for buck, which is not a bad thing at all. It is true though that dedicated players have better processing for audio/video.
It'll be funny if the Pro slim ends up supporting 4K blu ray. Hopefully regular Pro's will still have decent trade in value.
Who knows, maybe it'll happen when PS5 launches.
Is there any chance we could see an HD DVD add on type of device like the Xbox 360 had before Blu-ray won the format war?
I'd be less pissed off by this rather than a pro with 4K Blu-ray support coming out at Christmas '17. As a PS4 Pro owner anyhow.

Correct me if I'm wrong but no digital service offers media in the same quality as UHD-BD do, not even pirated atm.
Even the "terrible" XB1s offers a substantial upgrade over streaming 4K/HDR.
What you're saying is to ignore an option because something better exists. Do you realize how silly that sounds?
You're not going to see either. Sony has made it very clear they don't care to push 4K Blu-ray on the PS4, they'd rather you watch streaming media or buy a separate Blu-ray player.
Because it also plays games? Is a better smart TV solution than any other smart TV solution out there? Because why do people use the PS4 or XBO to play blu-ray discs? There are way better blu-ray players out there?

I can see where he is coming from though. You can get standalone players now, for the same price you can an Xbox S, so although it is an option, it is a jack of all trades machine really.
My original Xbox One is sat gathering dust, so when more than two discs are released that I'm interested in, I wouldn't even consider buying a console to watch them.
The Panasonic and Samsung players both have smart TV features built in, and the Sammy does a lot of things better, including outputting Netflix at true 24p which not many media players do.
Can you or anyone explain how it's better, cause I'm at a loss with this.

? I didn't say others don't offer smart TV solutions but at least from my experience, they are all *bad*. Like really bad. Slow, sluggish, support drops randomly (leaving my samsung home cinema broken as it doesn't support newer blurays), leaving you behind with non working "apps" - the fact that the underlying operating systems for TVs and players change every once in a while is of course also a reason for this.

I can only comment on the Samsung suite which work great. As I mention, Netflix on it is one of the few versions of the app, to output 60/50/24Hz material correctly. Does Amazon on the X1 even support HDR yet? MS aren't exactly fast with their support of their consoles either.

Its been explained threw out the thread that there are standard UHD players that do the job better then the One S. A little reseaerch will point you in the direction of getting the best UHD player you desire. If it was truly about the games plenty would already own the XB1 for its exlusives. If the UHD player is whats pushing people to buy a One S then more power to them but their are better options out there if you seriously want the best UHD 4K experience for your buck is all im saying.
How is MS responsible for the apps on the console? Amazon builds the app for Xbox, like Netflix builds the apps for the players they want their client on.
The thing is that in the past support dropped for many "players" because even the hardware manufacturers dropped support for their own devices.
If you miss a feature on a player still supported, you have to contact the people who build the apps - if you want support for the player itself, you have to contact the people who sell the hardware.

Even allowing for all that, if you have a 4K TV you likely have better apps already than those on the X1, so it's kinda moot. I can buy the Samsung player here for £211 currently (think it still comes with 3 discs too) so there is no way I would consider the S as it just doesn't perform as well as a dedicated machine, as all reviews point out. If you are going to just use it for UHD discs, it seems a no-brainer to me.

All I see are a couple of reviews from mid last year that state that the 4K HDR image on the XB1S is not as subtle as the Panasonic player. Because the colors pop too much or something. Nothing was quantified and without knowing the test conditions and settings this can come down to different HDMI inputs to different black levels needed for the two devices. Not to mention that this can easily be adjusted on the TV even if it were true / not subjective.
Also, the XB1S as well as the blu-ray app itself received updates since then.
The 4K with high bitrate image quality itself is the same on all players. Any differences between the players for how that signal is handled are so minor compared to the impact of the TV settings anyway.
Dolby vision is missing on the XB1S though. But we don't even have TVs yet that truely max that standard out so it's not relevant for now.

Again, this is up to netflix and amazon in this case, not the blame on either console.
To the consumer, this is of course transparent and if you don't understand what is going on this is just a feature missing that is existing on a different device.

Why make a UHD Blu-ray add-on for PS4 Pro when they could just make a Networked UHD Blu-ray player that PS4 Pro & other devices can stream from?

that was one of my main ones in this thread, my Ps2 was my first DVD player, Ps3 was my first blu ray player, and I hoped Ps4 pro would be my first 4K blu ray player
Just watched my first UHD on my Xbox One S. Luckily it didn't suffer from any apparent playback issues.

I think the point is that all the good 4K TVs have reached the processing power and software development to be actually deserving of the title "smart TV". This isn't like a few years back, with shitty apps that barely work, not supporting several formats, being all buggy and slow loading etc.
Plex, Netflix, Youtube etc. are all easier to use (and supporting the new standards, codecs etc.) on my LG for instance. They are treated like channels so you can effortless switch between them. It also keeps at least one app suspended etc. The TVs also connect easily now to PCs (even wireless display sharing or direct content streaming) as well as feature USB 3.0 ports for HDDs etc. to function as media-PCs essentially.
In my case, I completely stopped using Plex on PS4 because the TV's Plex app is just so much more convenient to use.
This means ALL the 4K-related software/app stuff that both the PS4 and XB1 are pushing, is irrelevant. They may catch up feature-wise but then there's still no point of using apps on a second device when you can just switch the "TV" channel instead.
The ONLY 4K-related content that you can not get via your TV itself are UHD Blu-rays - ironically also the only media that fully shows off said TV. It's thus the only relevant feature to put in your "4K" console apart from games of course (which are not 4K anyway but at least HDR makes up for it on both base and pro PS4s).
So you're more interested in a 4K player then?
Save money and buy a standalone player then.
Otherwise I don't see why you won't upgrade.

One machine used their budget for 4K gaming, the other for 4K BD. Yet I don't see the Xbone S receiving the same criticism even though it's primarily a games console.

I think that might just be because the xbone S is supposed to be the more budget option akin to Ps4 slim. the interesting thing being that they included 4K blu ray. scorpio will be what focuses on 4K everything.

I'm thinking of picking it up. The price isn't too bad. Also going to watch John Wick in UHD soon as well. 4K streaming just isn't up to snuff right now, so I really like the UHD option on XB1. It's been a great player for me. Hopefully Sony's next revision of the PS4 Pro includes a UHD drive. It would only help the format, which is doing alright from the looks of it.

Sony had a budget to stick to, so they made a decision to create a more powerful console with that budget. Ignoring the fact at the time Sony had no consumer-level UHD player available, Sony could have decided to provide less power in the Pro and include UHD instead.
So Sony had a choice: more power for games, or less power and UHD.
So why did Sony make a "bad choice" for their games console by choosing more power for games?

you have a point. although for me personally, these consoles should come equipped with being more than just the essential gaming console features, it is true that the most important thing obviously is catering to what the device is designed for.
there's just one other thing that comes to mind; if sony opted to leave a 500GB in the console instead of 1TB, and they included a 4K blu ray player, could they have still hit the 400 mark?
