PS4 Slim Officially Announced: $299 - Launches 15th Sep

I wonder how long the Slim will be at $300 with 500GB. As of now, the price seems to be to be more about selling the Pro (which is perhaps what Sony wants?) because it's not much of a price jump, given the increase in storage (typically an extra $50) and the jump in specs. Compared to the Xbox One's pricing, though, it makes sense. At $250 or at $300 with 1 TB, I think Sony would have a much more individually compelling product within their own product line.

As is, it makes it tough for me to decide when previously I thought I'd 100% be buying a Slim. Which is why I think Sony might have anticipated and wanted this debate for new customers when they set the pricing. But it also gives them the chance to drop it later, which $250 might not have enabled.

With the list of Pro compatible games and Sony patching previously released ones (except for Bloodborne, for some reason) it seems Pro is the best choice as it has mandatory support for every game released from now on.
Appears like Sony has been planning this for awhile.

edit: A question, if you play PS4 games on normal mode would that affect the energy consumption, noise, etc?
like the fan could be less louder fro example

After watching the conference, I don't get the impression that mandatory support is still a thing. If it were, I think they'd have made a point of emphasizing that every game will support it. But we'll see soon enough, one way or the other.

Can you even enable a "normal mode"? It sounds to me like the Pro will auto-Pro your games when it can. Unless you mean games that never receive a Pro patch or support. In which case, we'll have to see how it manages that when it launches.

that other thread looked like every game from late September on will be pro compatible
i was under the impression there was two modes in every game, so i supposed you could select them, but now im not sure.

this gen finally got intersting :p

Well... Mandatory support is a thing and will happen because common sense means Pro becomes lead target. But what is arbitrary about this whole thing is what "Pro" support actually means....

Its completely up to the developer on a game by game basis. Pro support could be Ultra 1080P 60fps. Pro support could be Medium 4K HDR 30fps. Its going to be completely based on dev output.

Im also wondering if you can toggle all of the performance switches as well. This is what is going to redefine console gaming if we can now toggle performance based on our preference and hardware.

Again... The PS4 Pro lives or dies by dev output. If devs aren't doing fancy shit, then at best the Pro upscales to 4K.

If they had a WD2 pro bundle I would buy that in a heartbeat. Right now I'm in for the BB platinum headset bundle and trading in my OG.

I am of the belief that the Pro for HDTV owners is going to be much better than believed and Sony just not saying anything because of the 40million user base.

Doesn't look like there'll be a standalone in the U.S.

DVD I'll give you that but most people didn't care about the Blu Ray, except hardcore Sony fans. No one cared about HDMI, card readers, or backwards capatibility either. Otherwise it would have been preferred over the competition for being much more complete and feature filled. I was around back in 2006, it was only hardcore Sony fans that cared about that stuff.

The PS3 was considered one of the best Blu-Ray players when it came out and IIRC one of the cheapest players at the time it came out. People absolutely cared about the Blu-Ray player aspect of the PS3 in 2006 and bought one for it even if it was a bonus.

Oh, okay. I could be wrong.

If the current Amazon ranking is any indication of what is actually happening (difficult to tell with the hourly which is more of a "trending" tool and specific to Amazon given that other stores -like Best Buy today- have specific deals), it looks like Sony both overpriced the Slim and Under-priced the Pro.

$299 slim, releasing Thursday, is not in the top 40, while the $399 Pro has been in the top 3 since it was available for pre-order (and in fact is #2 for the month of September currently).

$249 vs $449 (the Pro having a beefed up CPU and UHD drive to justify the extra cost) would imo have been much smarter.

Who was going to be making this beefed up CPU?

But I guess we'll have to see what bundles/ special offers show up during the next three months to really judge.

I don't think that PS4 Pro is under-priced. But Slim is indeed overpriced, agree with that. I think Sony did it for purpose, this reminds me an old trick to increase sales for "premium" model.

The slim is getting some really attractive bundles, and will be discounted for BF which is only two months away.

As it stands, $349 1TB versus $399 1TB Pro...even more of a no brainer. I expect $249 naked slims for the holidays and $299 bundles like what they are doing with Uncharted. Maybe even more games in that bundle for BF.

COD BF slim bundle with BOTH IW and COD4 remastered for $299 would sell like hotcakes.

Surely the whole point was to persuade people to go for the pro over the slim.

And of course, the casuals the slim is targeting are much less likely to preorder a device.

Looks like Amazon isn't shipping them out early so people get them on Day 1. Probably not gonna be until Friday/Saturday until you get it if you preordered from them

awww damn, The bundle now doesnt include the headset. Was going to bestbuy to pre order it and now I wont

you and everyone on slickdeals and cag. people were going nuts with the pitchforks. then bestbuy cancelled everyone's orders and all the trolls screaming bait and switch went back into hiding.

You can also see it differently:

The slim at 299 was made to replace the current ps4 and is aimed at the casuals that dont have a ps4 yet => most casuals wouldn't preorder

Hardcore Gamers want the pro => they love preordering, especially this as its a new product

As beautiful as that FF15 Slim is, I’m gonna have to pick mines up tomorrow at Best Buy, can’t have no PS4 in the house for another 2 months and my OG is out for repairs, who knows when that will come.

Once OG gets back, gonna see if I can find good trade in deals. Hopefully Gamestop does another promotional $200 credit. If not, Amazon will give you $160 for a PS4.

Um...

Are you me? Except my PS4 was deemed unrepairable, at least not for cheap lol (fortunately I can still transfer everything as the system works just now the video output).

I'll probably talk to them about it tomorrow. Because c'mon

I also did. I had a really helpful person that just said that's the estimate they have for when they'll receive the stock. He said the 15th is the release date for the item but that doesn't guarantee they'll have sufficient inventory by then. Mine also says the 27th so I'm thinking they haven't even received their shipment yet.

Is anyone "upgrading" from a the model that was released last year? I did the math on an Amazon trade-in (~$173) + whatever credit I have on my account and the grand total ended up being $100 out of pocket. The 5Ghz WiFI and overall less noise from the system is what's drawing me towards it.

$100 is a lot to spend just for 5Ghz & less noise. To each their own, though.

Yea...mines unfortunately has the blue light of death. Hope it's just a slight repairing or they just send me a refurbished. I'm gonna trade that sucker either way, but hopefully I can get back at least $30 or $40 off it. Right now I'm just breaking even, $150+tax to fix, $165 Amazon trade in credit. I need to get at least $200 out the deal.

I know Black Friday will definitely have some nice deals
