PS4: Welcome to the System Software 6.00 Beta!

I just turned on my PS4 and got the notification to download it.

I did not see anything in the notes as far as new features yet, just the same extended storage disabled that past betas did.

Updating now.

It said that new features are not in the beta and its a more under the hood test.

Yeah, they usually do that with all their beta software that I've been in, but sometimes they still have some features to test but major ones are sometimes held back.

This one so far is completely under the hood and if it was just for their basic stability there would be no open beta.

I'm wondering if this is the name change one since they are keeping hum for now about feature(s).

I'm waiting for reports to confirm that the UI is both faster and more sluggish. Happens every time. It's like the Schrödinger's UI.

I was just going to comment saying it seemed a teeny bit snappier but that always happens with an update, because it does a minor database rebuild, lol.

But I haven't had a sluggish UI in quite a long, long time on this thing.

I've been in these betas before and currently. I do not recall any big feature drops coming late in the beta cycle. Guessing stability is all we are getting, though possible something on the back end related to user names. Hope I'm wrong but doubting I am.

It could be that their SDK for developers, it is possible that major version changes equate to also major version changes in the SDK that comes along the new OS (think Android Pie/API 28 or iOS 12) and thus they are testing major developer side features with some API breaking change to support new features in games, maybe better PS5 compatibility, etc...

Given a version number MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, increment the:

  1. MAJOR version when you make incompatible API changes,
  2. MINOR version when you add functionality in a backwards-compatible manner, and
  3. PATCH version when you make backwards-compatible bug fixes.
Additional labels for pre-release and build metadata are available as extensions to the MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH format.

You have been able to play music off a usb stick for a long time...

And Spotify. The great thing about the Spotify integration is you don't need to have a subscription to select individual songs like you do on their other apps (phone/tablet).

But I think he means custom music to loop for themes?

I did not know that. Cool tip

I just hope that weird error goes away where I go to notifications, friends list, or some other parts of the UI and it just hangs for 2+ minutes and then gives an error.

This is happening to you now or with the beta software? I don't think I've ever seen that before this beta or during it right now.

Still hoping that one day we'll finally get the old notification centre back.
And still no eu sign up
I'm in the beta and live in the Netherlands. That said I'm probably in because I took part in the previous firmware beta versions.

First time I read about this error.

I hope they can release more ram by getting rid of the web browser. Such a useless feature with the prevalence of smartphones.

That would imply a redesign of the Store and of a good chunk of the system UI (WebGL based, at least at launch). I still think you need a browser/WebView, but I think a native Store and a fully native home screen UI would need less resources and be faster to boot.

I doubt it really takes that much RAM - it's probably running a version of Webkit or Blink, and the actual rendering engines are rather small. And it's used in other portions of the OS I'm assuming, not just the browser. Sure, actually rendering web pages takes more memory, but it won't be an issue when that isn't being done.

And while I agree with the principle that having a web browser in this day and age on a console is hardly essential, at least according to Pornhub statistics quite a few users come from (or using a?) PS4. So while you and I may not use it, there are quite a few wankers that do :)

The ps3 had an update that released more ram for devs late in it's life cycle. I just hope that sony does this with the ps4, to squeeze every thing of this machine.

I hope Sony figures out a way to make their Store Search even more convoluted and like a digital version of a rotary phone.

It does take a while to search for a game. They need a simple search, where you can type in the whole name. Like on Android / Xbox.

It’s weird bc it’s happening to me, my brother and my friend. All on different networks and systems. On regular firmware.

What are the weird errors, are they an error that pops up with an error code or is it doing something glitchy?

Like if I go to the notifications screen to check on a download or something, it will just hang there while it tries to load it for actual minutes. Sometimes the notifications just pop up after that and sometimes it gives me an error code. This same things happens when loading up the friends list and also the account (like if I wanted to go in offline mode).

It's not every time. It's random. But it's happened to all of us at different times and it's an impossible thing to search for online. I thought that deleting all of my notifications fixed it at one point, but it didn't. Neither did rebuilding the database. I just kinda learned to live with it happening sometimes.

That is very strange, I'm wondering if it has to do with the network in the region even though you're on separate networks, are they in the same region as you?

I'm wondering if a factory restore or reinitialization would fix any of that.

Yeah we're all within minutes of each other geographically. I doubt any of us are up for doing a full factory restore any time soon. I did one for 4.5 or one of them, coincidentally. It's an annoyance, but re-downloading and re-installing all those games would be like the equivalent of 100+ times waiting for the error to correct itself haha

Yeah, I personally don't think it's anything going on with your hardware/software internally. It may be how the ISPs in that area are prioritizing the PlayStation Network. I've heard stuff like this happening with Netflix as well that some regions it's chuggier than others on the same hardware.

I can only imagine it getting worse or better in the future if they decide to sell out to the highest bidder if they're not doing that already since Net Neutrality has ended.

One last thing, have you tried the DNS settings using the Google route bypassing your isp's DNS defaults they may be using for PSN?

haha it's funny you mention that because I recently went back to using the DMZ for my PS4 and switched to google's DNS. It's a weird ass problem, for sure.

I'm from the Netherlands too and already have the beta for about ~2 weeks now (or whenever it started).

In all honesty I'd love it if they did a 'Snow Leopard' release one of these days - no new features, the sole focus of the release is to hone performance as much as they can. It is a bit funny that consoles that can run some AAA games at 60fps can't do so for their own UI.

I had a message (which I saw but did not open) pop up a second time a day later as if it were just sent, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary.

Anyone have informed opinions on what they could be doing behind the scenes that needs testing before consumer facing changes are shown? I really hope something new comes from the update just because I like new things.

As of right now, not a clue. The most common and obviously wanted addition people are assuming is PSN name changes. So if they altered on the backend on how the IDs are assigned across the entire network and software, that would definitely call for some under the hood testing on a major revision.

But time will tell.

That's the only thing I could think of too.

I wonder if they have name changing coming soon. I remember last year Layden rudely answered someone at PSX, saying ask again this time next year.

Name changing right? We're nearly 5 years into the PS4's release starting to think they have some major back end coding issues of how they created/stored these names from the PS3 hot mess days which have never been addressed and still using the same system

That was the exact issue. They have been migrating everything over time, and from what I understood it's not a problem on the PS4 it's the PS3 infrastructure it will impact. Probably one of the reasons they are shutting down select PS3 games the last two years, was possibly in part to do name changes causing issue within those games and breaking something on the network.

I remember reading something said to developers to expect some issues with some games if/when it goes into effect.

By Ps9 we will have name changing.
