PS4's creaky plastic casing

DISCLAIMER: I own a Vita, PS3, and PS4. I'm a big fan of what Sony is doing these days and I'm in no way complaining. This is just to sate my inquisitive/OCD nature.

The PS4 has a very slick design, to say the least. I love this thing. I'm overlooking some of the cost-cutting flaws that were implemented in the design. The fact that the glossy plastic strip that's located in the groove (where the USB ports are) has buckled a bit on the right side of the console (if you're facing the front)...it's popping out a bit. I've decided to live with it. Probably expanded as a result of the heat.

I am, however, curious if other people have noticed that the plastic casing is a bit "creaky". When I dust the thing off, even the slightest bit of pressure applied to the console causes the plastic to creak a bit in various areas of the surface plastic.

Generally, the thing sits there, I put a disc in, play a game, and it works, and I'm happy. That's all that matters to me. But I just wonder if this is a design flaw or if it's meant to be that way?

That is meant to be there. It's space for the fan shroud.

Mine doesn't do it, but it is likely neither of those things. It's most certainly not "intended" to creak, but a stationary piece of electronics that creaks when pressure is applied is hardly signs of a design flaw. It's not like a creaky 3DS hinge (just as an example, I have no idea if that's a thing) where the issue occurs under normal operating circumstances.

I thought creaking was normal? It happens to my PS2 fat, PS3 fat, 360 slim, and my 3DS XL.

I haven't noticed any creaking with my PS4 while I was setting it up.

I love my Ps4, but ya, you can tell they cut a few corners in the production to save on costs.

It doesn't really matter, as the Ps4 just sits on a shelf. It's not like I'm taking it everywhere. But the original Ps3 just feels way more substantial and solid in my opinion over the Ps4. It's almost like this Ps4 is what should be the redesign of a larger, heavier, and more expensive to produce Ps4. As if they jumped right to a redesign lol.

Yeah, it really makes me wonder how impressive the inevitable PS4 redesigns will be. If they can solve the cooling issues that would arise, I wouldn't be too shocked to see a Wii/WiiU sized PS4 in a few years.

The PS3 itself was creaky from the initial launch. I have a Japanese fat 60G launch model and the thing creaks just like my old indoor AC whenever it's turned on/off. It's simply ok to ignore. My 60G fat PS3 still lives to the day.

I was TERRIFIED about heat issues when I saw how compact the damn thing was. Sure, it looks cool being that small, but I don't care since it went straight onto my shelf. For all I care, it could look like a big brick lol. I was pleased to discover that though it is warm to the touch, it isn't really hot and only occasionally even gets loud enough that I can hear it at all. Waaaay quieter than my OG ps3.

My old PS3 would do that in the middle of the night and it scared the shit out of me a few times. Loud pop!

Yeah my PS4 is a bit creaky. I noticed because I've been moving it a lot from place to place, and when I pick it up and apply pressure it's easy to exploit the creaks. It's definitely a cheap plastic design, but as long as it holds together and works I'll be fine.

It kind of reminds me of the rattling of the WiiU Gamepad. I thought something was loose in it, like a piece of plastic or something because it makes this sound. But I figured out it was just the buttons. They make a sound like plastic is broken and rattling inside. But only when you shake it. As long as it works I'll be okay with it, heh.

EDIT: There's also this interesting creaking noise that both my PS3 and PS4 make sometimes when I have them on and a game is paused or its just sitting in the menu. I'm not sure what it is, and it surprised me at first with the PS3, but I suppose it's just some part inside moving, maybe with the hard drive or something. Both of them do it so I just assumed that it's how their parts sound.

It creaks a little, yea.
My fat 160GB PS3 feels like a million dollars compared to the PS4, tbh.
Real heavy, tight, shiny, lots of ports.
My PS4's grindy disk drive issue and little bit of creakiness I'm writing off as the result of being an early adopter of a mass of millions of consoles that were being made as fast as factory slaves could make them.
I'm not complaining or downing the PlayStations, cuz oh Lord my launch 360 - lol; jumbo jet sounding fan, oven hot, and RROD. :/

I'm not constantly fondling my PS4 so I don't really care.

And when taking it to a friend's house it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart. It seems like they employed the cost saving techniques of the PS3 slim right away but it still doesn't feel like a cheap product. The engineering that went into creating such a powerful system in such a small form factor is worth a lot more to me than the quality of the case plastic.

Yup am same as you OP, big PS fan and i agree the console is a bit creaky but doesn't bother me one bit i love my PS4

Yeah same for me too, thought it was just meant to be there, seems to be the case.
Not sure about the glossy part of the PS4 sticking up though, don't have that.

As weird as this sounds, I just really love the back of the PS4 controller, ha ha, never been so obsessed with the back of a controller before, just the way it looks and the texture of it, really is a great controller. I'm scared about the analogue sticks though... No sign of it wearing yet, but my friend who got a PS4 after me (I got Player Edition at launch, he got solus PS4), says both of his Dualshock 4's analogue sticks have worn off quite a lot, the one he got with the PS4 and the one he got seperately.

I would have thought mine would be the most likely to be worn down first as they're launch DS4s, so really hoping it doesnt happen to me. Don't suppose anyone knows anything about that issue still?

You´re not? What kind of life are you leading?

Focusing on the thread however I notice this on most of my plastic appliances. What would bother me most was the creaking my fat PS3 did a few minutes after I turned it off, result of the heated plastic cooling down.

Those analog stick issue seems to be exception rather than the normal like faulty line cause me and my brother bought PS4 in the same day and been using it daily i even play way more than he is but my sticks are as good as new and my brother starting to wear off lol hopefully Sony is aware of this and gonna fix it for all future DS4 production
