PS5 Game Install Sizes

Was looking through the Sony Direct site to preorder and noticed the install sizes at the bottom of some of the game's pages:

I know there's been a lot said about how quickly these SSD's will fill up, and that 105GB for Spiderman is making me nervous considering many assets should be shared between MM and the original game. Hopefully there will be an automatic or easy way to manage installs between the internal and external drives.

Looking forward to that 200GB COD install :messenger_mr_smith_who_are_you_going_to_call:

I don't see an issue. You have a Terabyte hard drive or bigger and let's say you buy the disc version; you're not going to use that much for every game. Bigger data because everything is extremely upscaled. So, this can be expected with all digital games for the next Gen.

Actually, you have an 825GB drive (internally). I wouldn't get incredibly worked up yet, though, as both games listed are based on previous generation games. Games built with the PS5 in mind should be smaller, in general, than they would have been on PS4. Still... things are probably going to get pretty cramped pretty quickly.

So assuming all games are about that size and we take the average (~73GB), divide 825 by that (assuming we get the whole thing)....and it looks like 11 games will fit. I can easily live with that. Not sure I ever had that many on my PS4 at a time.

Remember that with the PS5 (not sure about XSX), you will be able to install just what you want to play. For instance, MP or SP. Hopefully they give us other options than just those two.

Honestly smaller than I was expecting. But these are early gen titles, they will grow.

Disc or digital makes no difference, the full game is always installed, just like this generation.

And the PS5 SSD is 825GB, out of which you'll probably get less than 700GB to actually use.

They said that about PS4 too. And some games did it, but most did not.

66GBs for Demon Souls?! How will the Xbox Series S survive their exclusives?
It would ideally take up less space due to needing smaller assets. And people don't need to have Call of Duty Ghosts installed and Modern Warfare at the same time. Yeah it's nice to just have everything installed but convenience comes at a higher price.

I Think 66GB will be the Norm. A 4K blueray disk is 100GB via 3 layers (33.3GB per layer).
So 66GB fills up 2 layers and Demon Souls is not a cross gen game so I doubt that there using much duplicate data to increase streaming speeds.

Yeah, it seems like 825gb is the claimed capacity size. In that case, it will be 768gb actual size. Then factor in how much is used by the system itself and yeah you're probably closer to 750gb I assume. It'll be rough for digital console owners imo.

It will be rough for everyone. Digital or disc doesn't matter, the games will take the same amount of space on the SSD either way. Nothing runs from disc, everything is fully installed.

And the system will definitely reserve a lot more space than that. Again, I think we're lucky if we get 700GB of usable space.

Yep good point

I mentioned this in another thread but you should be able to install one less game on XSS compared to PS5 assuming 100gb install sizes on average. This is taken into account the communication that XSS games will be roughly 30% smaller than XSX games. We should assume PS5 and XSX will have similar file sizes. So what does this mean? Get an external no matter what console you buy.

Demons Souls is a Remake of a PS3 Game. It's received a total face lift, but isn't going to be as sprawling as new games. These days every game is some kind of huge open world, and Demon's souls has a lot of corridors and realativly small interiors. Next gen Games will probably hit 100GB regularly.

Wow! 100GBs?! I guess that's better than 200 GBs

What's your cap out of curiosity? Also, why would someone who has a data cap who digital?
1.2 TB a month for the household. When you live alone it's manageable, but 3-4 heavy users? It has to be monitored carefully and downloading and re-downloading games is not acceptable.

Guess I became conditioned with using my phone and Steam for all these years. I don't like having to store and swap discs, just prefer to have my games all available on my device ready to go. They pretty much exist in the same form for those who buy physical if a game gets an update and requires a patch.

Games are always bigger than the "Minimum" listed on the box.

GT Sport says 48GB (It's nearly 90GB on disk :messenger_grinning_smiling:)

Well.. you can now throw data 100x's faster into memory.

The PS5 honestly i/o wise is capable of games way bigger than it's HD lol

The limitation is going to be what the artists can come up with and what is reasonable for a game size. And the limitation is still pretty damn.. well... limiting.

We can go from variety to variety way faster but the increase in detail and variety is still quite limited.

Is that more to do with the way they install. It will usually ask for around double the storage required for the installation procedure, my friend had this problem with FF7, deleted the required amount then it asked for more just to install the thing.

Think that is confirmed to be happening, at least on Xbox side. Hopefully we're not waiting 7 months for a system update to implement it though.

Have they confirmed you'll be able to store games on a USB HDD and copy stuff over when you want to play? I have seen people say that but nothing from Sony direct. If you can, I think that will be my plan - grab a 4-6TB external HDD and use it as cold storage. In the longer term I imagine I'll also get an internal SSD expansion when they are easily available and not priced to badly.
