PS5 Has Now Officially Outsold Every Xbox Console Ever Released

Whilst Switch & DS has outsold every Sony console ever released, despite the extra 10m PS2 receipts Sony 'found' last year.
They didn't find it last year that's cope.

They hadn't updated PS2 numbers in years.

The only reason X360 performed so good was because Sony fucked up big time in the first half of the generation. Never happened again since then though.
Pretty much. Xbox had a decent bunch of exclusives at the start which helped them, but around 2008 it was pretty easy to see how the gen would finish. Sony smashed that second half.

The entire Kinect and focus on media capabilities really fucked Xbox up. Never recovered from it.

The focus on Kinect and media helped the 360 sell a further 35 million consoles. But it was short term gain only.

I give more credit to Microsoft, that was the only time they were aggressive. Peter Moore was aggressive, he chased after games. If I'm not mistaken, the exclusivity of FFXIII was broken because he went to the Square Enix president's house and brought sake to talk. For the Japanese, that was a sign of respect. So much so that the 360 has many Japanese games, some of them exclusive.

The console was more powerful, easier to develop for, and this was reflected in the games. Marketing took advantage of this and fueled console wars. Just remember that this was when the tables and influencers started.

But then Peter Moore left and Mattrick came in, he thought Kinect was the future and put all his bets on it. The more hardcore gamers, who drive the base, received little attention, while Sony focused on creating games for that audience. At that point, I think the console's image took a hit, but I think it would still have had strength in the next generation if Microsoft hadn't completely messed up the Xbox One.

It's Microsoft's fate: they can't keep something good for very long. Around the same time, there was the excellent Windows 7. Then they thought touchscreens were the way to go and created that monstrosity that is Windows 8.

whoopty doo. Now lets go out and suck somebodies dick who works at Sony to show how much we care how much a plastic box sold.

Consoles have been dying since the PS2. Just look at those pathetic numbers!!!!!
They do. Nintendo no longer produces traditional consoles, but rather a tablet/handheld device. Microsoft's consoles are no longer relevant, and Sony is looking at other platforms.

Well maybe it is just getting stretched out and becoming more PC like with a bunch of players on older hardware. If Fortnite and the like are still on PS4 when the PS6 launches will a decent number of people just stick with PS4? Could we get double cross gen?

We might get a double cross gen. Very good point. But that also points to the fact that consoles aren't dying or plateauing, if it's a fact that multiple generations of consoles are actively being used.

As a console agnostic, Xbox tends to be my "third console," but the 360 really was a bad-ass little machine. Being able to load your discs to the drive? Crisp, powerful upscaler in the box? But, yeah -- their own missteps ("Hey -- things break.") helped Sony catch up. At first I just wanted the PS3 as a budget blu-ray player.

That was a weird generation. Fun, though.
