PS5 Pro Left Behind: Death Stranding 2 Misses Out On PC Ray Tracing Upgrades

The arrival of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on PC with new graphical upgrades highlights that the PS5 Pro version missed out on ray tracing features
The PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, handled by Nixxes Software, introduces ray-traced reflections and ray-traced ambient occlusion.
These additions significantly enhance environmental realism, adding more accurate lighting interactions and depth to the game's already detailed world. Yet, the PS5 Pro will not be receiving these features. More surprisingly, the game has yet to receive support for PSSR upscaling, a key tool in freeing up GPU resources for new graphical features on the mid-gen PlayStation console.

based on the videos i have seen of the leaked version, PC version at max settings is very demanding on the hardware so not surprised at all.

It says you have to have a High end PC just to make use of this, is anyone really surprised it's not available on console, I sure hope not.

with PSSR2, they can lower the internal res to 1080p and have a ton more GPU headroom for RT on the pro by leverage PSSR2. Like dropping from 1440p > 4K with PICO to like 1080p internal > 4K vith PSSR2 down. The new 21:9 ultrawide can also help with lower target at 3840x1620. Guess the PS5 version isn't moving much anymore and they got a PC version to sell at full price.

But Kojima said that PS5 is small update ever PS4 and they didn't bother to implement RT on Pro.

Looks like Nixxes didn't have such problems.

Kinda odd that a first party built engine is getting this massive enhancement on PC rather than the home console.

It just nixxes doing nixxes thing like back in the days with shadow of the tomb raider RT shadows etc. Take PC port and elevate them even further. I feel like they will be a PS6 version or PS6 patch with RT so they can resell the game at a budget price. Just hope these RT features become standard going forward on Decima, wish it was RTGI rather than RTAO though.

And we have to wait for the next few years until GG do something with it. Right now that Horizon GAAS abomination is blocking the toilet pipes...

Not really, consoles aren't made needlessly specified software wise like the PS3 anymore and are more like PCs now, their engines are going to be more easily scalable on PC than they've ever been.

I find it hilarious that Nixxes, a rag tag bunch of programmers only good enough to port games to PC, were able to add ray tracing to Decima while kojima with his 100 developers with 30-40 of experience making games werent able to.

Japanese devs need a bit of a kick up the bum. Capcom was bailed out by nvidia engineers who patched in path tracing in requiem, because they werent able to get ray tracing running on base consoles, and the Pro version and PC version's main RT mode has a terrible denoiser that is simply unacceptable five years into this gen.

The game flopped. It's probably best for everyone if Kojimbo just moves on to the next project. This isn't gonna have a Cyberpunk comeback story because not many are interested in the game.

If it makes anyone feel any better, the most PC players will also miss out on those upgrades.

SM2 is also way more RT-enabled on PC. It's just dumb to ignore additional selling points on a platfrom, no?

Doesn't rake away from PS5 Pro/Base one bit, considering how good and smooth it works and looks on way cheaper consoles.

Fingers crossed they might release a patch or something down the line. I loved DS2 but it was a extremely poor upgrade visually when compared to the first game.

If it's super impressive I'll probs pick up and just start again. I could speed run up to where I am but I have enjoyed playing on the pro, so if they can patch pssr 2 that would do me I think.

You've been talking about the game almost daily for months. Still haven't finished it?

I dropped it a while ago once the pc version got announced as I want to wait for pssr 2
I just saw a video comparing different modes on a 5090, even in DLAA vegetation is fuzzy when rains. Also the guy said Pico was doing better job there than DLAA. are you sure you want PSSR2 there? :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Now that's I've had some hands on time with the game, I would've traded these "exclusive upgrades" in for improvements to texture streaming and LOD improvements.

From what I've observed, it carries over the console versions cut off line for certain LOD pop-in and texture streaming assets which is very, very disappointing. Enough to put me off from the game.

The graphic settings themselves and the presets they provide hardly changes the presentation to any significant degree whether you're on the lowest or highest preset. They played it way too safe with this release. The first game was much the same as well. And given this is the DECIMA engine, there's no shot of any improvement arriving from modders as was the case in Death Stranding 1. So we're stranded with these settings for the long haul.

The exact same cut off point as I alluded to. It's like I'm playing with -16 anisotropic filtering. This level of "optimization" is present everywhere and not just relegated to this scene.

Once again, look how aggressive the game retrains VRAM consumption in general. Very unflattering for a flagship release in 2026. Looks no different from PS2 textures and I mean that with a straight face.

Yeah the textures arent great when you get closer to the ground. I assume its like that on console too.

This is very much a 'good at a distance' game.

No, no, no. You have it completely backwards.

This is very much a, "good when it's directly in your face", game.

That is to say, in cutscene and the near vicinity will look great, but some distant and far distant detail suffers greatly.

I wasnt really replying to you, and you have fair points. But walking down the mountains to your base, if you move the camera close to the ground, it actually looks really bad.
