PS5 sales down 49% YoY - Tom Warren

You can tell Tom was titilated writing this article, probably made him feel 6 years younger too.

IMO Sony has fumbled the ball badly with the PS5. I use it for a glorified Youtube/streaming/4k disc player. That's it. I stopped paying for Playstation Plus over a year ago.
I'm basically a PC/Nintendo mark at this point. Love me my Switch 2. :messenger_beaming:

More expensive console vs dogshit first party games output... im shocked this thing is not flying of the shelves

If you dont think the FP output is dogshit good for you. I dont care. Nor does the market.

All is not well.

Compounded with....

How do they recover from this? Gaftards

Article:
Sony sold just 1.5 million PS5 consoles in its most recent fourth fiscal quarter, down 46 percent year over year. The slump in PS5 sales comes after Sony raised the price of its PS5 consoles twice over the past year, pushing the price of the regular PS5 from $499.99 all the way up to $649.99. Sony blamed "continued pressures in the global economic landscape," for the price hikes in March, amid an ongoing memory crisis and pressure from the war in Iran. Sony now forecasts that annual gaming revenue will drop 6 percent, but these forecasts could be impacted by ongoing memory costs. "We plan to base our PS5 hardware sales in FY26 on the volume of memory we can procure at reasonable prices and we expect hardware profitability to be essentially the same as FY25," says Sony. Sony previously revealed in February that it had secured "the minimum quantity necessary" of memory to manage the year-end shopping season and that it was working "with various suppliers to secure enough supply to meet the demand of our customers." Across the whole 2025 financial year, Sony sold 16 million PS5 consoles, down from 18.5 million in the prior financial year. It's a tough market for hardware in general right now. Microsoft recently revealed its Xbox hardware revenues plummeted 33 percent year over year. Along with declining Xbox hardware revenue, Microsoft also reported a 5 percent drop in Xbox content and services. Nintendo is also raising its Switch 2 prices by $50 on September 1st and forecasting a drop in sales over the next year. Sony also revealed that during the last financial year it has recorded a $765 million impairment cost against Bungie, the struggling studio behind Destiny 2 and Marathon. Sony first announced it was acquiring Bungie in a $3.6 billion deal just days after Microsoft's announcement that it was acquiring Activision Blizzard in 2022. Bungie has been hit with with the layoff of hundreds of workers since joining Sony's PlayStation division and was forced to delay its extraction shooter Marathon following lackluster alpha test feedback. Last year an artist accused Bungie of using their work in Marathon without permission, and the matter was resolved a few months later.

Yup this is what happens when you raise the price to the extent Sony did.

Last quarter was the worst performing quarter for PS5 hardware sales since release. It's dropping off a cliff. In comparison with PS4 in the same quarter of its lifespan, PS4 sold over a million more units.

PS5 was already trailing PS4 all gen, but last quarter has created an even bigger divergence on the chart. I doubt that PS5 touches PS4 cumulative numbers this gen unless the release of the PS6 is delayed.

Well there is one more variable in GTA6 although I am not sure it will move the needle like so many others think.

Now this start to make sense why devs like Capcom and even some western devs (007 First Light) putting the effort to port their games on Switch 2.

Nintendo also raising the price of their system but at this point PS5 is getting stupid expensive to the point most normal people can't effort to get one.

First of all, get an apple TV or Chromecast. Using the PS5 to watch youtube or other streaming content is like using tractor to drop your kid off to school lol

Second. It's their most successful generation, so how have they fumbled again?

While there are a lot of factors involved, I hope this is an omen for console manufacturers avoiding $700+ next gen hardware pricing. Probably wishful thinking on my part considering how far along they are in development and the state of RAM/Storage pricing.

Unfortunately thanks to POS AI companies (OpenAI, Nvidia, etc) and the greed of component manufacturers (RAM, SSDs, etc), I don't see that happening.

This reckoning affects everything, both consoles and PCs.

Wait, what about those losers that got a PS5/PRO just in desesperation before the increase of price?

Industry is thriving on other platforms. Steam controller just sold out in 30 mins.

Got mine but how many did they have for the initial order? How many will they sell overall? Prices are on the rise and it is going to squeeze people out. It is going to decline. The question is by how much?

What do you think this says about the state of the industry? I'll spoil what my response will be, I don't think it says anything. Even ignoring the fact that we do not know how many Steam Controllers were available for order, I fail to see the connection between a novel controller finding success and the industry's overall health.

What does that mean? Xbox has been dead for years
It means exactly what it says on the tin. more PS5s sold in a single quarter than xbox's did the whole year (including Christmas period). Now what does that change here I'm not sure.

Playstation plus users and revenue increased. ~13%.

Wait, what about those losers that got a PS5/PRO just in desesperation before the increase of price?
That would be literally ~3 days of sales. Increase was announced March 27th. Those people were smart.

That's included. The hike was announced March 27th but didn't officially take effect until April 2nd.

That's scalpers scalping. Scalpers will attempt to scalp the PS6 too, no matter the price.

A lot can be done to get out of this predicament. First, fire Hermen. Then stop this GaaS initiative and bring back what Sony is known for, single-player games.

No one is saying Playstation can't have Live Service/GaaS games, but make it one or two. Not a whole generation dedicated at multiple studios seeking the elusive successful GaaS game while they put nothing else in the meantime.
