PS5 Size Comparison

I don't understand the need for the disc less version of the PS5. No disc drive will be a minor difference in cost. For a digital only version you would expect it to have "more" hard drive space. Sony can't do that without doubling the size of the SSD . That would be a pretty big increase in cost to jump to 1.6 TB of space.

I have a feeling they announced it, but the digital version will never be seen in retail. It's really something that doesn't make logical sense.

Don't you think that it would be nonsensical to formally announce something but never release it? As for the difference in cost between the regular PS5 and the digital version, every penny counts; businesses maximize profit anyway that they can, and a few less dollars per unit equates to tens of millions of dollars for the 6 to 7 million units that Sony intends to ship out in the fall.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Sony has decided to create a digital-only version of the PS5 as a result of the percentage of PS4 games that have been bought digitally this generation; they must have determined that a considerable percentage of PlayStation users don't buy physical copies of games anymore. Furthermore, I read somewhere that Sony earns a greater percentage from sold digital copies of games relative to physical copies.

Parker from 1979 Alien (after seeing the Alien kill Brett): "I don't know...whatever it was it was big. It was huge! Like a man PS5!" (Slightly paraphrased in context for the PS5)

I really want to wait for a slim now.
Also, looking forward to special editions or mockup photos of alternative color schemes.
Black and red, black and gold, etc.

It just looks like something from the early 2000s. For me, the previous console (PS4 Pro) looks newer. The PS4 Pro actually looks like a Sony device.

You have to consider why it and the Xbox Series X are so large. They feature high-performance DESKTOP APUs that are running at very high frequencies (3.5 GHz to 3.8 GHz CPUs and 1.875 GHz to 2.23 GHz GPUs) and therefore need a lot of space and robust cooling systems to prevent themselves from overheating. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sony (and Microsoft) won't be able to make smaller versions of these machines until AMD is able to make 5nm APUs, which won't occur for a few years.

man thats a big console, i think Sony did a good job of making it seems smaller than it actually is. I can see a bunch of people around Christmas time poping this bad boy open and being like whoa! where to put this thing

I want to see a size comparison with the original original Xbox.

OG Xbox had a warning about falling on to babies heads. This thing needs a warning about falling on a babies head and then through your floor and causing seismic disturbances along fault lines.

Its taller but not fatter so how can it cool better and be quieter?
Short answer: it can't.

It can be cooler, BUT it would need at least 3 fans operating simultaneously in parallel to create enough air flow to cool the SoC and SSD. The thing is... since those 3 fans can theoretically move as much air as a single 12mm fan (like the one on XSX), you can be sure they'll be noisy af.

This is pretty much a custom mATX/ITX tower. They're also between 35-45cm tall. This is just designed by Alienware, hence it's so ugly and looks like a toy.

This big boy better be whisper quiet.
Will this be hard to clean? I'm kinda worried, where i live, Dust is a major problem.
Pull a pantyhose over it, best ghetto dust filter.

I don't have a single white component in my A/V room or in my living room.

PS5 is not going to look right in either set up. I may get somebody to spray it for me like I did with the 360.

This thing is huge.
Any info on the plate thing at the bottom? Do we need it? Do we also need it, if we want to put it horizontally? Because I've only seen images with this.

I like the PS5, Series X, One X/S and PS2 Designs. Every other console looked meh to me. But you know what. That never actually influenced my buying decision. Which is probably true for most people. So calm your tits boys.

Tall and thin, gets it in, good for making babies.

Short and thick, that's the trick, to satisfy the ladies.

XSX therefore wins.

I believe 5nm at TSMC is already at full production and 3nm is scheduled for 2022. Mobile chips at 5nm should be coming off the line right now.

people complain their PS4 sound like a jet engine then now get upset because Sony is improving cooling which of course means a bigger console with larger heatsinks possibly more fans and better airflow.

i supposes if nobody can come in an be like iT sOuNds LiKe a JeT EnGiNe!!!11!!! then they have something new to complain about.
Yet we still don't know how it's going to sound, it's not like PS3, which was pretty massive piece of kit was silent. Other hefty piece of kit which was Xbox VCR, was really silent, more than X1X.... So let's hope they don't fucked it up.

Sony will probably heavily susidise the digital version because it locks people into the PSN marketplace, which is great for them. Currently in UK FF7 remake is £60 on PSN, £45/50 on Amazon.... I'm sure they would absolutely love to only make the digital version - no expensive manufacturing lines, no physical distribution logistics, no retailers taking margins, no second hand sales, no chance for piracy, no game sharing, higher profit margins all the way baby.

The Ps5 is over designed, it wouldn't surprise me if the console ends up being more expensive than the Series X, despite the latter having better hardware, The ps5 can't be cheap to produce with that industrial design.

So maybe the rumors are true and the ps5 will be quite expensive.

Well, that's good news. I didn't think that the manufacturing process for 5nm chips would be ready any time soon since AMD's next generation of CPUs, Zen 3 (Ryzen 4000 series), will be 7nm. I guess Zen 4 (Ryzen 5000 series) will be 5nm.

Also, I guess smaller SKUs of the PS5 and the XSX will be released sometime in 2023, which is consistent with the releases of the PS4 Slim and the X1S, which were released in 2016, three years after the regular models.
