sixth-generation game port me if old~

Is it worth the price, though? I only played the PS2 Demo Disc, are the lack of voice acting, orchestrated music, and forced portrait mode deal breakers?

Would've been day one at reg price IF

-smooth framerate and performance.
-voice acting

Even at $15, not worth it IMO.

Even performance itself would've been tolerable of the framerate was smooth. Right now, even the Air is choppy. Terrible!

Any chance of patching the voice acting in? Or is Square not that kind of iOS publisher?

What does it perform poorly on? Everything? Would be sad if it wasn't smooth on iPad Mini Retina or iPad Air.

That's the thing, even on Air, Retina, or 5s, the performance is choppy and bad. Which is a shame.

A poster on the older thread said the loading times were atrocious. He even did some quick math to show that you'll be wasting huge amounts of time watching load screens.

Did they ever fix that?

The best DQ game (though that's not saying much) but the mobile port is straight ass. You'll spend more time loading up the battle than actually battling in most cases.

YES!! Considering DQ8 has one of the best dub in video games. You'll be missing ALOT just playing this.

The money would be much better spent picking up a PS2 copy of it off ebay. No sale SE can do to justify picking up such a poor port of the game.

As a massive fan of the PS2 version this price drop was enough for me drop the money on it for my phone.

So let's first get the facts down. My phone - Sony Xperia Z1 - so pretty decent. I'm finding the performance plenty acceptable. It isn't a smooth 30 FPS that's for sure, but it's well in the 20s pretty much all the time. Acceptable for phone game and for an Rpg that doesn't require quick reactions. If you phone is below the Z1 power level though, I could imagine it getting pretty choppy.

Graphics - it looks really nice in HD at 1080p on my phone. The portrait mode is weird to start off with, but along with HD and the fact I played the original in 4:3 - I was soon fine with it.

Music - I definitely prefer the orchestral tracks from the western PS2 version, but as I was playing this through my phones speakers - the chip versions didn't sound massively different and the great melodies were still shining through.

Voices - Now it is a real shame that this doesn't have the brilliant voice work of the western console version and it's impossible not to miss it if you've heard it before. That said - I can accept it not being here personally. One - it was never in the Japanese version anyway and I can hear the voices so clearly in my mind - its like I'm filling in for there loss here anyway.

Gameplay - Touch controls are no match for a controller and that is pretty clear when moving your character about here. It's not so bad out in the world, but it's not easy to manoeuvre around small rooms. That said - there is an attempt to make things better by allowing you to click on NPC's and objects in the environment to interact with them, but you still have to get close to them before you can do that. What you lose in character control you gain in menu use. All the menus and choosing battle actions are actually improved by just touching them. I was also happy to see that when you gain skill points you can actually see the skills in a menu, so you can see what you are aiming for.

So - They've clearly made decisions that make this a 'phone' game rather and just a straight port of the console version, like no controller support. It is also clearly based on the Japanese version - so it's a phone game for the Japanese market. So on one hand it's kinda lucky we got this in West at all, but on the other it's not the superior console version that we got over here previously.

My take - if you haven't played Dragon Quest VIII before, please buy the wonderful console version. If you have it already and love it and have a good phone and like the idea of having it with you at all times, then this is a good get. I'm happier with it than I thought I would be - it's still lovely DQ 8 after all, eh guv. A Vita version would probably be way better though.

Not paying more than 5 for a mobile game.

I hope they are learning that expensive games are for consoles/portables, not for crappy phone platforms.

I dont really care about the voice work or orchestrations but the fact that it seemingly cant even run smooth on an ipad air is too irksome.

I hope they aren't, I don't mind paying a premium when the title is worth it (ie; not this case) and I like seeing them try more elaborate work on the platform. Honestly, I'm quicker to pull the trigger on a higher price mobile game than I am a 3DS game at this point.

There's a hard 2GB limit on the AppStore. The only way for a game to go over that limit is to have the app download extra files into the app's document or cache folders. SquareEnix probable doesn't want to foot that bill.

The framerate is bad on everything. Probably the result of game being (supposedly) entirely re-created using Unity 3D and SE trying to keep battery usage down.

Yep. Sadly they will just assume that this means people do not want games. Put this on Vita and I'll pay $20-30, but I'm not paying more than $5 for a mobile game.

And with this thread can we please mark the death of using "PSA" in titles?

PSA =/= Pretty Shitty Advertisement. It should be reserved for threads that actually provide a useful service to our community.

I'm with the Vita and 3DS crowd. SE butchered the game for the mobile crowd. It was semi acceptable that there was voice acting as most DQ games have been voice free up to DQVIII, but no orchestra music and portrait mode woth the joystick taking up 20-25% of the screen moving around, its not worth it.

I took the plunge since the price dropped and I'll say I'm damn glad that I did. I wanted a quality time sink to play on my phone. I've been playing for 2 hours (2nd town) and have had ZERO performance issues on my Iphone 5.

I think the performance may well come up short in some situations, but it's not even close to being an issue for the game if you have iPhone 5 or up. The portrait is absolutely the right decision for phones, but I'm sure I wouldn't be that happy playing that way on my tablet as I prefer landscape on my iPad.

I asked this in another thread, but anyone know how it runs on a Moto G? I've seen some youtube comments that say it's about as good as another version (20fps, but random drops)....but nothing concrete.

.

This is based on the Japanese version of DQ8. The Japanese version had no voice and no orchestral music.

IMO, it's absolutely a deal breaker.

All of those omissions make the mobile version a travesty, compared to the PS2 masterpiece.

Wow thanks for the heads up I didn't realize my poor medhia lost her voice. This needs to be rerelease on PS4...I still have my disc copy so I could technically emulate it but would much rather play it streaming to my vita or PS4.

I spent 80+ glorious hours playing this on a PS2/ 32" TV. Why on earth would I want to experience all those hours on a 4" screen held in portrait mode? What a waste.
