[Mistake]

Just a friendly reminder that there is still very little quality control for online retailers. I grabbed a usb-c to multiport adapter off amazon, and this thing got super hot. The directions say you can plug into the PD port to use power while also using the rest, but this thing clearly couldn't handle it. I started smelling melting plastic and it probably would have gone on fire.

So anyway, before you burn your house down, keep a close eye on new stuff. I also recommend changing old power strips since things can wear out, which is also a risk.

I always forget to take batteries out of stuff I rarely use and every time it ruins something I say to myself "I am going to remove all my batteries..." yet here we are!

Some years ago we got a simple socket installed by an electrician.

The same night, I smelled something weird as I was going to bed, I located the smell by the new socket, touched it, and it was so hot that I jumped back in pain.

I turned off the electricity to the house and screwed it open when it cooled down. The inside was pure black, it was probably minutes away from going up in flames. Since I was going to sleep upstairs and it's an old wooden house, it would have been really really bad.

After that I check everything on the regular.

I bought a 32GB flash drive for like $4 off Amazon in order to save a backup copy of...a legally-owned PS4 game. When trying to install the game from it, it terminated every time with no notification or error message. The thing was super hot after, and best I can guess is it shut down as a safety mechanism. Had no idea that was even possible.

I have a 256gb usb, but I only transfer 10gb at a time or so. The thing can get hot enough to burn my hand if I let it

Not to derail this thread, but, obviously, always use common sense and inspect things yourself (as was the case, here: good on you) even if the work was performed by a "professional." A lot of people are perturbed by doing home electrical or gas work themselves and call someone to do it - with good reason. I live in a house originally built in 1918 and there have been various contractor-performed renovations during its existence. I do a lot of things myself and, given the prior, "professional" work I've encountered, I've seen some shit, I can tell you that.

On the device front (back-on-topic), use a retailer with easy returns and don't buy no-name, Chinese shit. Sure, you'll get duds from known brands every once in a while, but a sure-fire (ha ha) way to acquire a charging cable which redefines, "warm to the touch," is to purchase one from merchant iBuyGizmoPowerBigHonkers. If the Chinese 3rd party sellers ever figure out the trick of naming themselves in a manner palatable to Western buyers (and, hence, dodge skepticism), we're all going to be in deep shit when the PRC conscripts them to sell substandard and faulty products deliberately as part of some preemptive strike. Operation: "Burn America House Down" is go.
