PSA: Spelunky is now on Steam

Vita version was supposed to be July :(

I will pick up Papers Please and try to forget this exists. Waited this long to play it on my preferred platform, can wait a little longer. Tempting though.

After playing this on 360 and now PC, I have no desire at all to play this on a 5 inch screen. One misstep and an epic chain reaction ends your run before it begins.

I see that the XBLA-version has 2 DLCs called Arenas and Explorers. Will these be released on Steam/GOG?

The explorers DLC is already included with the game, it was a bunch of unlockable characters. I assume the same about the arenas but I haven't loaded up multiplayer yet.

I really want to spend money on the Vita version of the game.

So for the moment I'm trying to sell Steam cards in order to fund a purchase on Steam as well.

It's slow going... I'm up to $3 and feel a long way aways!

Can we start bragging? This was my first run in two months, I messed up though and didn't get the true ending though which I was disappointed though -_-

And I didn't realize it was strictly the amount of money you had. Still did decent though, though if I knew it was money based, i would have stole from the shop keeps.

Add me on steam for tips and tricks (and to try and beat my dailies of course!)

EDIT: Streaming now!

Finished my first run with 200k. Got lucky with a jetpack, and sacrificed a lot of stuff. Had a ton of health at the end.

Loving this game. I kinda suck, made to 1-5. I'll get better.

Definitely doubling dipping with the Vita version.

Looks interesting, but not $15 interesting.

I'll probably wait a Steam sale.

I get that, but it is so worth it. It is a thinking man's platformer. You are constantly facing tough risk vs reward decisions. I liked Rogue Legacy, but love Spelunky!

I got this, I played the freeware version a little but did not pass the jungle. I was so envious of the XBLA version...
Any general tips? Some playthroughs I've seen don't care much about exploring, only getting to the exit and maybe picking up a damsel, is this a good strategy for beginners?

Reading the comments here this game sounds like high score hunting. Is there no "normal" single player mode? Just play level by level and complete the game?

This game is all about learning, time management, item management. Try to learn all the mechanics, learn how the enemies and traps work, observing your surroundings, and whether or not you should waste two bombs for that crate behind a wall.

the game does count your "score" at the end, and by score meaning treasure. The objective of the game is always to get to the end though.

I have an amazing talent for dying in the black market. Fire frogs run into a tiki trap and I get blamed for it (hell, yesterday I'm pretty sure I got blamed for a snail blowing snot bubbles too close to a storefront). Then all of a sudden Spelunky turns into a AAA game and I have to murder everything with guns. That never goes well.

I've died in the black market four times out of ~15 runs since I got the PC remake, and did the same thing repeatedly in the original PC game. I need to stop even going there. It's a death trap and I'm not making proper use of the ankh any time soon anyway.

PSA: This game is kinda brutal. Took me three hours to reach 2-1, but now I'm unlocking stuff as well as finding some new items I haven't seen before. Game's a lot of fun.

You'll want to do some exploring, otherwise you're just passing up free resources. You get 2 minutes on each level, so unless you're going for a speedrun it's good to take your time and find as much gold/tools as you can. Just don't get too greedy and start losing health from taking unnecessary risks.

Just got it on Steam. I can't seem to choose a character. I cannot get passed the character selection. It doesn't freeze, it's just that I can't do anything. I move to the character and the only option I have left is "back," but even that doesn't work. The keyboard doesn't work either (Using my DS3). I have no choice but to alt+f4.

Any help?

Unplug the controller and try again.

This game is fucking annoying. Shopkeeper decided that a random ass boulder destroying his shop was my fault, so of course all future shopkeepers hate me too.

Do I really need to run to the exit when the ghost is coming? I want to explore more. The devs should have added a "no-ghost" mode.

seems like they're working on a fix (may have to wait a couple days, I'm afraid)...

I didn't witness the crime but I suspect you may have been indirectly responsible for wrecking his shop.

It makes you not waste too much time in a stage, it's better than having a timer tick down that kills you instantly when it hits zero.

So I ended up finding an entrance to the black market for the first time. I was so excited because I found it while I had a stockpile of cash to spend. I proceeded to buy up almost every single stackable item across multiple stores.

The last item I bought was a boomerang. After I bought it, I wanted to test it out to make sure it would come back to me as expected. I tossed the boomerang, and it ended up hitting a shopkeeper.

He blew my fucking head off. What a way to go.

That's Dark So......Spelunky, bitch.

Sounds like spelunky alright. Despite having over 1500 deaths, I still find new ways to die

Trying out Spelunky for the first time has been a lot of fun. Have gotten a couple runs out of the mines, hopefully that dang tunnel gets finished soon.

I'm thankful I finally have a reason to post this comic

I miss you Eegra.

The shopkeepers being total dicks was annoying until I learned to be semi-decent at killing them. Suddenly murdering one and raiding his shop seems like a righteous quest because somehow I'm a damned terrorist when they set up shop outside an arrow trap and set the trap off by existing.

Daily Challenge is such a brilliant idea, I'm enjoying them not really for the leaderboard comparisons but for the simple incentive and motivation they provide. Like a pair of dumbbells lying around your apartment. You're always reminded you could do something. :D

Aiming to fill up the journal, unlock all the characters (there are new ones!) and at the very least repeat most of the achievements (never could get a no gold nor an 8 minute run on the 360 version) and keep sticking around the Top 100 on the general leaderboard.

Good times.

A random ass boulder, huh.

Don't suppose a big golden idol underneath said boulder got moved somehow prior to that incident? :D

There are a couple ways where the player really didn't do anything and the shopkeeps get aggro'd, but it's rather rare.
