PSA: The steam controller puck might catch fire

I don't know why he is asking "why?" about the puck being connected to the charger. Why wouldn't it be?
Should be connected via USB to the PC to profit from the faster transmitting compared to bluetooth I guess.
USB is 5v only, while a charger may overpower stuff? I don't know, got no Steam Controller yet and can't test it myself.
Confusing stuff nevertheless.

I guess I was expecting my Steam controller pre-order to be fulfilled in about 3 months, even after reserving in about 5 seconds after the option to do so arrived. I guess now it moves into infinity. Valve has to fix this I would imagine. You can imagine lawyers' ears are perking up upon hearing about this.

Ah....right. Forgot it is used for connectivity as well as charging.

In other news pouring petrol on your steam controller and throwing a match on it has the chance to set it on fire. Valve should look into that.

What if I'm filling my lawn mower with gas and trip/fall through the garage, past the kitchen, down the hall, into the study and spill gasoline on my puck while lighting a candle?

What then, smart ass?

Where there is blame, there is a claim sir. You know what to do.

wireless is kinda stupid for anything that doesn't actually need it. Waste of energy and money. Certainly small for individuals but huge if wireless would be used on everything globally, just for some comfort browny points.
I even rather have fixed cables on as much as possible. Since charging in itself is bleeding energy.
Wireless is indeed an energy waste for large things like electric cars but for small things like cellphones and game controllers it's not that big a deal.
Magnetic would be nice for a controller dock. Both for charging and storage of the controller.
Wires suck in a living room. Especially if you have kids. Breakaway cables became a thing for a reason. Magnet wireless charging are a natural breakaway without yanking connectors in and out of ports.
Instead of that puck put a MagSafe magnetic ring there. When I'm done gaming I can simply stick the controller to the side of a console/dock. If I'm gaming and need power, magnetic stick and continue playing.
I want these abilities on my controllers.

Wasn't connected to wall charger according to that OP. This needs more investigating.

Seems Valve is looking into it per the original reddit poster.

"EDIT: The Steam Hardware team has been in touch and is investigating. I'll send them the items soon so they can reproduce the issue. They'll send me a replacement Puck."

Serious question, has this been replicated? Or is this yet another isolated post on Reddit and everyone extrapolates this to all units? Judging from other testing that rather seems to be the case.

Everything seems to be based on that one post from what I can tell.

this.. iv e been trying to replicate it. ive used a fork, paper clip, stripped a copper wire and laid it across. nothing..

So the watch was charging at the time. I guess the guy charges his stuff in one area. The metal watch band on the charger fell on to the puck and caused it to burn up.

That seems to be a very edge case. You have to have another device with connected electrical current which is then dropped onto the puck.
