PSA: Titanfall is the years best multiplayer shooter. (It's also only $20 atm)

If titanfall 2 has 30 different assault rifles and writes that off being "fully featured" instead of, you know, actually being a genuinely more fun and better game than the first then i won't play it for very long. As if I want to spend hour unlocking guns which are virtually identical...

Well they could release half a game again and have it dead after 6 months.

I play in a good sized PC gaming community, 30 of us bbought it on release, no one was playing 2-3 weeks later.

I guess ymmv on the content, but there is a perception out there that it was lacking, is be really surprised if they don't attempt to change it. The community didn't die off for no reason.

Was it the customization that ruined halo 4 or the gameplay itself?
The fact that you customize your own loadouts is a big reason why people didn't like it. It also added a bunch of customizable perks which cluttered the sandbox. I'd say it's a very big factor.

No skins aren't alone but customisation is. Look at COD:AW it has customisation everywhere like legit everywhere now and its going to be holding a community for ages.
Once again, Halo is a shining example of why this isn't always true. Customization is not always a good thing and too much of it can clutter a game.

I'm totally derailing this thread though so I'm really done posting about this now. I guess we'll all just have to agree to disagree.

If you want to keep people playing give them a reason to CS TF2 and Dota do this well.

Then that would be wrong. The devs themselves came out and said Titanfall isn't for the competitive people. There aren't any tournaments or competitions for it anywhere.

Yes there are... Here's one that just happened.
http://titanfallpug.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1660#p5458

And they said the competitive scene wasn't their focus during development. The game is highly competitive with serious players.

PC community in Australia is all but dead. Attrition is available at peak times but that mode is easily the worst in the game. All the good stuff like CTF, Hardpoint and Pilot Hunter will turn you into a skeleton waiting for a game.

Shame about no community servers. People definitely would have backed it. It's a good game.

Was it the customization that ruined halo 4 or the gameplay itself? Don't remember much of the MP, but I don't remember a lot in terms of gun customization, more of a perk situation.

Then surely more people would be playing TF no? TF isn't like CS or Dota, the mastery ceiling is very low. Games like CS and Dota have huge varities in skill level.

It's cute that you think that. But that is completely untrue.

The thing is I don't believe Titanfall van ever really be super successful because too many people go in and just play it like COD with mechs.

Then they hit the message boards and claim the game is like COD with mechs.

Game could use a king of the hill mode or race mode to encourage noobs to learn how to get off the ground.

It's cute that you think that.

It's very easy to quickly get good at modern fps games, bullets shoot straight, easy recoil, low amounts of ammo required to kill people. You ask people to perform the same in harder to master games like CS, and suddenly they are shit. Ask them to perform the same in BF or CoD, they are pretty similar. The mechanics are very quickly grapsed and mastered as they are easy, repeatable, and most importantly dead on similar.

So disappointed in this game. The appeal wears off so quickly I almost couldn't believe it.

Maybe I'll go back when it's free on EA access for a few matches here and there.

i dunno, maybe it be more lively if it was on PS4?

sorry i had to be that guy

i still play it time to time when i go over my friends house, he has a XB1 with pretty much just 2 games worth playing, i still love the crazy action going on. make me hope we hear something about titanfall 2 coming to PS4. luckily Advanced Warfare is gonna scratch some of that itch.

IMHO Attrition is the core game of Titanfall, because you can still rule although the other team is way better or your team sucks. Its very rewarding that you still get a decent amount of points killing the AI.

Do you want the game to have long legs or not? Like it or lump it to give a game longevity you need to be able to fill bars(or a rank system) and have lots of options in terms of the way you play.

I hear this a lot, that titanfall doesn't have "long legs" but I don't understand. Does titanfall need to be pumped full of filler fluff to be considered a great game? The ranking system is great (having challenges for prestige really challenge you to learn every gun) and is not something you can just blow over without mastering.

I don't think there's anything really missing from the base package, hell I remembered playing the beta for over 24 hours during the period and never thought once to myself "man this game really needs more pointless stuff to unlock", it was great even without all the guns/modes/maps.

Why are you overlooking the fact that this is unlike you other run of the mill fps game? Parkour mechanics, player vs titan interaction, titan vs titan interaction, to master these alone really takes the ceiling notches above most modern fps (cs go excluded because it is a completely different kind of fps).

Yea, I think the franchise has a ton of potential with a bit more creativity like this.

I enjoyed what I played of the beta, but wasn't sold on the number of game modes, customization, and amount of maps. I do realize Respawn isn't a huge team and didn't have a huge budget, so I'm not bashing the game for this, but I did decide I'd wait for TitanFall 2, which should hopefully address much of this and really start to realize how good this franchise could be.

Exactly!

It's shame when people bash this game and how it's dead, but that's just on PC, so it doesn't really proof anything other than it's declining on PC. On Xbone I can get into games even early in the morning.

And the thing is, at least for me, that yes, I would have loved good SP, whole TF universe is so interesting and they could easily build interesting SP. And it's somewhat laking on customization options. BUT still I'm more than happy I bought it, I really got my monies worth. And if TF2 comes with even more content, then I have competitor for CoD4 in my heart,

Try shooting a bogey that is literally flying circles around you. Now try shooting that bogey while you are doing the same to avoid getting shot yourself. Now try and do that while also avoiding becoming Titan bait. Now try doing a flag run fast enough to outrun even the guys that spawn ahead of you.

Easily grasped, but sure as hell not easily mastered.

The amount of content was disappoining considering what's in other games. Expected more with there being no campaign and all.

Favorite mp game has been tlou :) new to me since I skipped ps3 one.

Still my current goty

It's just a pleasure to move around and shoot stuff, smooth as fuck

I played Titanfall just in beta, and this is a side of the game I appreciated a lot.
Strangely enough, what I didn't appreciate and in the end convinced me to not purchase the game was what I was expecting to be its strongest part: Titans.
When you reached the point in a game where they started "popping" in, it was also when games started becoming a chaotic mess and stopped being fun for me.
Also, I've heard people trying to defend and justify the idea dozes of times, but I really, REALLY didn't like all these PVE grunts on the map, distracting from the actual fight with other players.

In the end I played the game for few hours, moderately enjoyed it, but decided it wasn't something I was willing to play regularly in the long term.

P.S. Fuck the arguments about "manufactured hype", by the way.

Chaos is managed as you get better at the game. Titans also will force players to be more creative with their movement. Grunts are tools for getting your titan faster counterbalanced by the fact that any noise you make doing so will attract the attention of pilots looking to score a kill, though you can also use this to your advantage to lure players into a trap,

My problem with grunts was that it was too difficult to distinguish between them and real players.

Actually like this. Players are easily identified if running / parkouring / or boosting, but the normal skin is similar enough that you can attempt to blend via decreased mobility and more regular movement. This is counterbalanced by such mobs being easy fodder should a pilot or titan choose to engage, though if a pilot engages you might get the jump on him.

Except that due to the speed of which pilots die, the game boils down to sticking to roofs and continuously just jumping on and off the titans for meltdowns. Most players are gonna grasp pretty damn quick that the Titans are mostly gonna one shot you, then as a result they ignore titans and go for other pilots.

Stand still and shoot him? Don't be on the ground to be titan bait? If we are talking about a 40 year old parent who has never played a shooter before, then yes I'm sure TF is difficult as balls. But average joe shooter player is going to be totally fine with it. The game is about avoiding the big fuckers until you can actually get them, and until then it's very similar to other modern fps's: shoot the other players. Which you can do quickly and easily, because it's that similar.

Edit: I'm going to bed now, ya'll know my arguments, good night.

ya its almost 5am and i had no problems at all getting into games. just finished a few more. for a dead game it sure is active.

I played it again this weekend and today morning before work and I got into game instantly.
Wtf, man.

Wait until the free weekend is over.

I routinely have to switch datacenters depending on the time of day that I play, just so I can find a game. It's not dead, but it's definitely not thriving, and if you want to play outside of your regions peak time, be prepared to deal with 100ms+ pings.

The right reason to keep playing is because the gameplay loop is satisfying and you can improve your mastery of it.

This is true. I think Titanfall has more moments of awesome per match than any other FPS too.

Every match I play is record worthy, almost every time I spawn I slip into a sequence that feels incredibly satisfying, like: perfect wall run to point, kill pilot during wall run, leap from wall to back of enemy Titan and drop satchel charges, leap off to avoid smoke and detonate charge, land in the arms of my own Titan, finish off enemy titan, cap point, etc...

I have no idea why I find it so dull. It should be fun, it should give me a rush, and will it was fun for a while and while I for initially get a rush it just kind of petered out.

The game just doesn't have that certain something that makes repetition of the gameplay loop sustain my interest. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I completly understand why people no longer play.

Hopefully TF2 will be able to tap into that magic.

Stand still and you will almost certainly die before you can get a bead. And even when you aren't on the ground good titan pilots will also light you up if you are un any way exposed and not moving to dodge their fire. Sounds to me that you would get your butt kicked playing even fairly mediocre players, It also seems like you are defining the skill ceiling with your own level of mastery. I would say get on my level but I sure as hell know that I've not reached the ceiling, even after 500+ hours in the game.

After playing awhile you can tell them apart, but yeah, male Pilots and Grunts can be very hard to distinguish whilst in the middle of a match.

Famale pilots are the opposite though, they move differently, so they are very easily distinguishable.

I think that's one part why grunts are great, you might expose yourself shooting them instead other pilots.

This.

If I'm not looking at the map I'll shoot them and then be exposed to pilots/titans when I don't want to be.

All in all it's a fun game and worth the price.

No, this is wrong. A titan is definitely a serious threat to a pilot and can swing the battle in either team's favor depending on how good the pilot controlling the titan is. When you have multiple titans on the ground and the opposing team has less than half of that, the enemy team will do whatever they can to pick off titans. But then while picking off titans you have to worry about other opposing titan's catching attention and picking you off before knocking their friend out. There are so many levels of mind games that can go into a player vs. titan interaction, and (at least in gametypes like attrition) pilots will make it their mission to take it down, regardless of how fast they may potentially die, it's about accomplishing it safely.

Makes me wish there was competitive Titanfall leagues so that people can really appreciate what goes into matches, especially with a team that can coordinate well.

this does depend on what mode you play in regard to interactions.

I find the rush in full effect when my abilities are challenged by players who are as good or better. Gotta go into beast mode to win there.

Oh definitely. Even simple stuff like 2 titan teams covering each other for rodeos always makes for an interesting challenge. A GAF tournament would be cool.

How is that a good thing? That adds an element of randomness to the game.

If I'm unsure of whether an enemy is a grunt or a real player, I'm basically left with little option but to kill them. Making a call on what I think they are amounts to guessing and that's a shitty way to decide how to go about what I'm trying to do.

"Oh that wasn't a player, now I've had to needlessly expose myself."

You might have found some positive element of this, but I don't think its good design overall and should definitely be changed for the next game. Or maybe make grunts more of a threat, so I don't feel I've wasted my time and effort killing one when I'm trying to do something else.
It's definitely not random since you can always identify a pilot if you are not careless. You can also make grunts and specters very deadly in private matches. I hope that Respawn adds a "hardcore" public playlist with deadlier grunts.

I think that's the fun in it. You can tell who is AI or a real player by looking at the minimap. I don't know if it's some kind of perk, but it distinguishes shots on there. Plus, you can also notice by the movement the player is making.

don't bother, pc version is dead. It was dead during the 24 hour free trial (at a time you would think there would be more people playing because it's free)

The insane download size might hold a lot of people back before even installing. Not everyone has top tier internet.

I have to say that game modes like Capture the Flag are uber competitive these days, games are always so close, and people have somehow learnt how to coordinate with each other even without the use of mics. There was one game when I saw the opposing team strategically block main routes with their Titans, using smoke and cluster missiles to cut off pilot only routes, whilst one player would use his Titan to transport his teammate with the flag back to their base. During the game I thought we were facing a party, it was only after the match had ended and the game stats screen had come up when I noticed that not one of those guys had a mic.

Was there some CFT course I missed or something? I see stuff like this happening all the time now.

Becomes second nature. Though I'm surprised more people haven't learned that you can eject out of a titan standing over a flag to pick up / return said flag...

But still you would expect more people to play it then on a average weekend. I spent more time chatting to people waiting for a match to start then actually playing it. Also, the matchmaking was horrible. One team usually had a couple of level 50 players and the other would just consist of level 2, 3 players.

Matchmaking has gotten way better. Teams are reorganized just before each new match.

At least for another 9 hours on Origin. Seriously great shooter that often reminds me of 6 degrees of freedom shooters like descent once you master the movement.

I'll also provide video evidence later, but that will be done after the sale is finished. For now enjoy a raw clip from a ctf match.

Edit: Wrong clip... Hold on... Curse trying to access files remotely on a crappy connection.

Worst 30 quid I spent on a game. Stopped playing after a week. Gameplay itself is amazing, what prevented me from enjoying it was the 6player cap while the game has big open maps (meaning it is pretty empty), and the brainless bots who, if you kill, gets you spotted by cloaked real enemies.

is it really worth it in pc?

i really liked beta but if it's a ghost town or you have to pay twice as much to get all the dlc ehhh....

Speaking from the US West servers, population is fine. Game is totally worth it.

Maps start to feel much smaller if you are good at parkour... Give it another shot.

Game is amazing, loads of hidden depth. Plenty of players and growing on X1, only played the free time on PC so don't know about the userbase there.
360 version arrived yesterday and it's an impressive port, I was amazed how 360 handles the game, probably one of the highlights on last gen for me. Plenty of players on 360 also.

I's currently $21.19 for the base game and all DLC if you log in to the mexican Origin Store if you are interested.

I might use this to get the DLC. Are there any repercussions to this if EA catches me, though?

Edit: Also, how do we access it? Just using a ip proxy?

Nah, have not heard of anyone being locked out or anything like that. I've bought a couple of things that way, and yeah. That's how you would access it.

I use a plug in for Chrome called "Hola". You just gotta know some Spanish to get around the website.
