PSN Account just got hacked : (

Meanwhile I have been locked out of my account for over a week after buying 3 games, no mater what CC I add or even when I try to use my paypal says my payment info is invalid. Have to buy a Psn code off amazon to get around it.

Yeah, it just happened to me for the first time ever, I don't really know what to feel. I guess some asshole hacked my account and made a great series of purchases (over $300 worth) at my expense. Obviously, I immediately called my bank, declared those charges fraudulent, canceled the card and deleted it from my PSN account. Still, it sucks having to go through all this because despite all the bumfuckery concerning PSN, Sony still has not been able to properly secure their network.

So, yeah not to happy at the moment.

If your bank is doing a chargeback you're about to have your account banned and lose all of your digital licenses. I would have called Sony first even though they are barely any help at all with these things.

Two-step verification should be a standard for all services that can store card information, I hope Sony adds it soon.

Yep, 2FA is needed.

But after the Steam XMas day breach I removed my CC info from EVERYWHERE, including PSN. It's better this way.

With mail forwarding, it always amazes me why people dont have seperate email addresses for every service they use, never mind passwords.

My psn email never gets used for anything else.

Sorry to hear that, it's one of the reasons I never leave my card details saved on any site/store... It adds a bit of extra work having to go back and erase the details after making a purchase but in the long term it always provides more peace of mind.

What would that change? The account could still be hacked without 2-Step verification.
Because Occam's razor says there has not been a hack here. So nope, it wouldn't have happened.

The chances of Sony having their service breached so a dude can buy 300 USD of games is not realistic.

The thought of keeping up with an additional 15+ email addresses in addition to passwords is making my head spin. My gmail has 2-factor auth. If that's not enough then I give up.

Wonderful...

Call RIGHT AWAY and explain the whole situation and tell them you did the chargeback before you knew that it would get you banned.

Don't take no for an answer, demand to speak to a supervisor.

Do not get off the phone no matter how frustrated you get. They are not allowed to end the call. Just keep insisting.

The unfortunate reality of call centers is that the policies are setup to reward the people who act like dicks. So act like a dick. Sucks for the rep you get, but you have no other choice. If you are nice, they will make a ticket, and nothing will ever happen.

I've had 2FA on my 360 for years. Sony not having 2FA is an embarrassment, especially given their history with security breaches.

I work in customer care, do this!
Just do not loose your temper, speak calmly and explain in detail!
If the rep can not assist, ask for a supervisor!

It's kind of crazy that you HAVE TO KNOW you gotta contact Sony first when your account has been hacked and the hacker bought things with your CC.

The first thing a sane person would do is call their bank, as OP did.

Is two-step authentication coming anytime soon?

Alright, right now I'm speaking with a representative through chat but I may call them. As of right now those charges do not appear on my PSN account, only my bank account lists the charges under pending. Thus, it could be that my card information was stolen and someone used it on their own PSN account to buy shit or the charges just haven't appeared under my account just yet.

And, now I've just been given a claim number and was just told to call them if the charges do appear on my PSN account and I get banned.

A lot of 'hacks' are folks reusing passwords. So they make an account on WeDontKnowSecurity.com. that account is compromised because they live up to their name and it happens the folks use the same email anf pw for psn.

My own default is a generated password for sites i don't care about saved in a password service and all my important stuff has a unique password i type in. But 2 factor is also supet importany and cuts down on many possibe compromises.

This. It's not everyday that real hacks happen. And when they do, it's certainly not over your single psn account.

So we need to massively go here and ask for 2 step authentication.

I just did this.

If anyone wants to re-use my message, I'm pasting it here:

Title: PSN Account Security

Your Idea: 2-step authentication would help people protect their PSN accounts and avoid fraudulent transactions on their credit cards.

edit- Also, you can just buy PSN cards and not link a credit card to your PSN account. This is what I did after the first big hack. Plus, I get 3-5% back from purchasing digital codes on Amazon, depending on what credit card I use.

Can you go into your PSN account and download those games? Or do they not appear at all in your game history?

I removed my credit card after the first PSN hack and have been using prepaid cards since. Don't save CC info to something that doesn't use two factor authentication.

Sorry op, but yea like everyone else Sony needs 2 step verification. For my Microsoft account in have an app that everytime i log into my account I get a notification on my phone that allows me to approve or deny a log in request.

Doing that now. The fuck are people taking about a ban?

If your PSN account was hacked and you mention to Sony, they'll just close your account.

Again, are you SURE it was your PSN Account that was hacked? Doesn't seem like it...

1. All purchases made will show up in your purchase history.

2. Your CC is not in plain numbers in your PSN account to be able to be used for external purchases, which means your credit card number was stolen at some ATM or by someone else, or some other website.

3. You should get an email stating you or someone else made purchases when it's your PSN account like this:

Investigate further before coming to conclusion.
