For some reason I laughed quite hard after reading this.
It couldnt have been a single persons report. Me and a buddy usually throw some profanities at each other (teasingly) when messaging, and at one point he submitted a grief report which ended up with Sony warning me for my conduct. The friend apologized, saying he did it in jest and didn't realize that'd happen.
But I still make sure that all my PSN messages are 100% profanity free nowadays, in case someone else decides to pull a similar stunt.

Just make it so no one can message you if they're not on your friends list. Bam, no more trolls.

It's in the Privacy settings somewhere.
Edit: Yeah, it's Account Management, Privacy Settings, Managing Your Friends List and Messages, and the bottom option is Messages (set to Friends Only).
Nah, receiving hate messages is fun. Just reply in a calm manner or ignore the messages, unless you insult them there's nothing to report you for.

It mostly doesnt matter what you write through group messaging. Some people abuse this system to get you banned. Its Automatic...

i sent a love letter back to two brothers that got salty on bf4, though if they had reported me it would have been some self-destruction because the messages they both sent me were very "lovely" as well lol

Well, at least its a temporary ban, OP. Be happy its not permanent cause that's much tougher to sort out. Sounds like someone reported you for something.
Not mine. I originally got banned because of paypal shenanigans, but I resolved the issue with Sony and paid them back with a PS store card. Then I got re-banned for no reason at all a week later or so.
Anyway, Sony really needs to re-work their ban system. A ban shouldn't prevent you from logging into your account. It should just limit your account. Here are some examples:
1. User is reported for using inappropriate language toward another person through messages or chat. User gets temporarily banned from sending messages, joining chats, and mic is disabled in online games.
2. User used cheats/hacks in an online game. User gets temporarily banned from online access to said game. Multiple offenses could result in a permanent ban.
3. User has a chargeback on a PS Store purchase. User is banned from the PS Store, online access and license revoked for said games until sorted out with CS.

Reminds of the time I called that CS rep at my car dealership an asshole and got banned from my car for a month...
Or when my cable provider perma banned me for saying all those awful things about American Idol.
In all seriousness hope you can get this worked out, being banned from what is basically half the functionality of most games and consoles is ridiculous, except in the most extreme of cases.

Oh my god that is so annoying. Especially because I can never find out how to leave a group chat.
press options button in your messages, click delete.
on app press down on group message for two seconds a delete prompt will appear.
Also, you're from the UK on a US account, I would just let the month ban go, you may run into bigger problems by calling them....
Maybe the offending message was a picture???
Click on their user name on the right and it should be in the profile options.

Hi sorry folks, was getting picked up in the car to stay with my parents for the weekend.
I've since found out that my partner was online on TLOU last night after I went to bed, and apparently he kept getting harassed and added over and over again to a group chat which he kept leaving. Eventually he snapped and said "fuck off" which is the only thing he can think of as to why they would ban my account.
