PSN account was just hacked

Tried to chat with sony, but since the email the account was originally created with is inactive the customer service rep just cut me off.

I don't really know what to do, I had a lot of digital content on my account and six months more plus. if anyone have any connection or can help me somehow please let me know.

Edit:
The original email provider has shut it service. the email associated with the account at the time of the attack was up to date.

I think we need an OT for this topic, too many instances of this happening.

Anyway regardless of the situation with your email, there was no excuse for the customer service agent to cut you off. There are other ways of working with you to resolve it.

I'd call again and also highlight the way you've been treated previously.

When you say hacked, what do you mean? Have they changed your PSN sign in password? Purchased games with a payment method tied to your account? Deactivated your console?

Man, we just had this discussion yesterday.

Was a big company hacked recently? There seems to be a lot of GAF posters losing their PSN accounts in the last week.

Might be the Neverwinter glitch that's getting people.

Or it just good be bad passwords and Sony's dumb lack of 2FA.

Changed password and email, always used a PSN card so now worries on that front, I'm not near my console but what do you mean by deactivate?

2FA needs to be a priority at this point. Its piss poor that they haven't done so yet, especially after the massive hack a few years ago.

It's not a great response from Sony but on the other hand you have the responsibility to keep the email information etc... up to date.

All these threads are definitely making me thankful I've bought most things physically from Sony. Definitely not planning go full digital anytime soon with all these issues

I heard from a friend their PSN account got preemptively reset by Sony today, for info. So it looks like Sony are looking at password reuse and resetting accounts.

I don't know, maybe?

I changed my password about a month ago after seeing a lot of PSN account problems last month on here.

Sony REALLY have to do something about this, is there nothing GAF could do to highlight this issue with Sony, maybe have some sort of campaign or something?

Not sure about the OP's email being inactive though, If the OP can maybe confirm the original email address that is/was tied to the PSN gamertag to the people at Sony would that be enough?

Another issue here is a common observation is many of those who speak to customer service generally play primarily on an account whose email is no longer accessible.
I think that's part of the problem too. I've seen several individuals who make gaming a focus of their lives but somehow forget the importance of those emails. Setting up a free gmail for JUST your gaming profiles is free.
PSNIDnamePlaystation@gmail.com
(dunno if that's real, but you get the idea.) I'd also suggest different passwords for these to make anyone scummy enough to steal one a "little" harder.

Regardless of this however there shouldn't be a complete disregard of your emotive state by customer service representatives. Take the advice of those on here and call back, politely, and explain your situation. I've found that being genuinely polite and understanding of the other side does usually work for weird situations (and not just for cases like this). You just have to remember that the age of social engineering is upon us and people have been using these low tech methods more and more recently as they learn about them to steal another's account.

This is definitely a tough situation because you don't normally want anyone to be able to call up and make claims they are you... until someone else has taken over your identity. Definitely not a situation I envy.

Good luck to you. Sincerely.

You can deactivate a console online (every 6 months). Or on the console itself.

The implications of that would be that you would NOT be able play games on another console. This is a preventative measure to stop 10 people having access to one PSN id download.

You can only set your psn id as a primary on one console. So if they deactivate your console you'll be greeted with a padlock on each game and unable to start it.

You can obviously have more than one PSN id set as primary on each console though, for example I have a UK, US and Canadian set as primary on my PS4. But I wouldn't be able to have those 3 accounts on lots of different PS4 consoles.

That's not how that works. On non-primary consoles (which you're describing as deactivated) you can only play games if you're logged in to PSN. Games on secondary consoles are tied to your PSN account, while games on the primary console are tied to the console.

If the current email is valid then why did the customer service rep cut you off. They surely can't expect that the original email address that started the account is still valid. Folks change email addresses all the time.

Humble Bundle got hacked, my GOG got hacked about three months ago along with my Gmail, apparently Sony's getting hacked yet again, and GMG got hacked about two months ago. Oh and Linus Tech Tips got hacked as well. I'm honestly probably missing some stuff. The fuck is going on?

Is something wrong with PSN ?

I emailed their customer support a few days ago when I was logged out of PSN 4 hours into a gaming session while I was on my PS4. It was so weird. Anyway, they said something about PSN resetting/update or something, a poster said something similar ^.

OT: I feel bad, OP. I hope you can get everything sorted out. : /

People using the same password across all those services?

try calling again and hope it's with a different CSR guy. sometimes you might end up with an asshole so no harm in contacting them again.

Wait, that doesn't make any sense.

You changed your email, and the original email doesn't work. But the won't accept the changed email at all as the main one?

Am I reading this right?

Call customer service again and elevate that shit. Tell'em you can confirm your email by sending a verification. Unless they changed your current email on the PSN file to something else.

For real. I'm afraid I'll be a victim soon.

If your passwords aren't shared between the PSN and other websites, and your password is strong enough, it will probably not happen to you. Like with anything, change your shit every few months. I just did with my PSN account a few days ago.

Yeah, my account was compromised too around a month or two ago. Even made a thread about it. Someone in Asia got into my account and deactivated all my systems and activated their own. CS dealt with it real quick because the console activated was an Asian console and I live in NA. The rep did say 2FA was coming but doing it all at once would be too much for their network, take that with a grain of salt though.

I have a similar issue, I've been using a @live.com email which obviously is no longer and I forgot my password, I have auto sign in which is fine but I can't use the app and in the inevitable case I get a new console I don't want to lose my account. ANy suggestions?

Sony said 2-Step was coming soon months ago, what the hell Sony. Get your shit together and add in 2 step to protect your user's accounts or get better CS to handle the hacked accounts.

Me too. If the worst case ever happens to me and my account is gone im still gonna be able to play like 70% of my games.

The all digital future sounds great and all but im never gonna do it as long there is a physical medium.

Call CS and see what they can do for you. For what it's worth, my experience with them have been great.

Well lets be honest. PSN is held together by duct tape so I can believe that.

I still can't activate my one and only PS4 as my primary. This page says I can't because I already deactivated them in the last 6 months, and Sony CS said they couldn't for the same reason too.

I gotta say man, MS support is what I miss most from moving to Playstation, Sony support has been a bad experience and from what I read online I'm not the only one to think this. Microsoft always fixed anything lightning quick and were really nice about it. I bought games and stuff accidentally and they always gave my money back right away, apparently Sony banned people for trying to get theirs back.

This happened to me almost exactly six months ago.
As of two days ago I was finally able to make my PS4 my primary again.

I got a sony email like a month ago that asked me to change my password to my account, I thought that was strange but maybe it was for the best

At this point I think these things are probably happening due to social engineering and reps seemly falling for them more so than passwords coming hacked websites and sharing passwords.

OP as suggested seems like that best thing to do is keep on trying when you can. Best of luck!

My account was hacked earlier too. Someone put £90 into my wallet from my PayPal and then changed my Sign-In ID to a different e-mail.

Luckily when I called they changed it back to my e-mail and are looking into refunding the £90.

All these recent PSN hacks are worrying. I just changed my password, removed my card details, and added a question/answer in the profile settings. Is there anything else I should do?

Wait, really? That's an MS email isn't it? Why would they do that? I still use an msn.com email that I've had since I first signed up for the service with Windows 95 back in the mid 90s.

Change your password often, and have different passwords for anything that requires a password.

I'd say it's pretty common that most people use the same password for multiple things, and also rarely changes it. So when and if their details are compromised it's easy for someone to access multiple things.

Removing payment info right now, fuck this.

EDIT: Had already deleted my payment info, past me is a smart man
