PSN Friends List Feature Wish List

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. So I thought I finally share it. I created a quite mock up image to help get my idea across.

6f1gew.jpg

Right now the friends list is maxed at 100 I think, which is good. But if you do have that many friends. It’s hard to remember who everyone is, what games you play together, etc.

As you can see in the image above there is a notes section to help you remember that person. The notes will also show in the master friends list when you highlight that person.

Then a “Games Played Together” section which will automatically fill in games you have played with that person with the most recent at the front. When you highlight the game icon a small pop-up will show the name of the game. It will show all the games ever played together, so if the list gets longer that the profile box, you’ll need to press the right or left directional button to scroll threw them.

When in that section you press the R1 button to go the next tab, and this will show which games your friend are playing at the moment. This should update automatically as well, say all the games played in the last month. With the most recent game listed first. Same type of layout too.

The last tab I’m not sure, any ideas? Maybe they can list future games they are thinking about buying. Or maybe a link to your own personal forum that’s contained in the XMB that only your approved friends can post in.

How do you think the friends list could be improved?

I want to be able to create groups in my list.
Right now I have no clue who is from gaf (except for some stand out persons) and who is not.

Most of my friends list is from GAF but some users use different names so it's hard to tell who's who. So yeah, notes or aliases would be a good idea.

i would like friend groups and a little comment or note for each friend,ie:
[NeoGAF]
Seiken 'he likes to play SF IV'
OrangeCat 'he likes to hate '
GrayFox 'he is nice'
Iori 'His GAF handle is Fersis'
[PS.BLOG]
Jeff 'So awesome'

EDIT:Ok,everyone wants groups!

One of the few things both PSN and XBL need. I mailed Major Nelson about it once. He even wrote a reply mail to say he would pass it on to the crew responsible.

Wow, great ideas there, especially the little notes section. The "Players Met" icon in the current XMB sort of does this, but it obviously isn't a permanent, running log.

IMHO, if the PSN Friends List would just add the stuff that LIVE offers currently (voice messages, gamer cards for use on forums, etc.) but do it for free, the overall experience would be vastly streamlined.

My biggest gripes with the current Friends List are these:
1) very limited avatar options
2) status message letter maximum is too low
3) a bit too many button presses required just to initiate a text message

Thanks solely to XBox LIVE, the PSN Friends List has come a long way--I hope that SONY uses 2009 to continue adding important features.

Also, to beat the dead horse: I really wish that every PS3 came with a headset so that more users would demand voice-related features be added to the PSN Friends List.

Here's an idea, this might be impossible, but I want to see what PS2 and PS1 games people are playing, what music they're listening to, and what movies they're watching.

(those users could of course turn this feature off)

I know what people do on LIVE is create a new tag just for that group. Everyone adds that group gamertag to their list and then views its friends list.

Of course a real group feature would be better but there is a work around.

This + the ability to make groups like on any social networking site (it could be turned into a unified clans list).

What's the current limit on friends? Like... 50 or something?

Tried to add someone the other day, and was informed that his list was full.

Current limit is 100 I believe.
I think I'm going to clean up my list some time soon. There's a shit ton of people whom I don't know and that aren't from GAF on my list who I don't really care about.

I don't really care about the "groups" thing, but "Games Played Together" is a fucking awesome idea. XBL should have that too! Kudos, man. Normally when I come into wishlist threads my eyes are pre-rolled because the suggestions are normally abominably shitty. Yours is good, though. Good job.

Music and Movies would have to go based on filenames or some sort of metadata tag. PS1 and PS2 I guess would have to read the SCUS number and map it to a database? Actually, I sorta wonder why they don't do that right now. It's frustrating when I have a PS2 disc in and it just says "Playstation 2 Format Disc". I'd love for it to say the actual game name.

I wish that just clicking on a name in my friend list would bring up the chat screen, not the Trophy Card.
Checking someone's Trophy card is a once in awhile thing, but communicating with them would be all of the time.

What really sucks is that it looks like users are just idling when they're actually playing a PS2 or PS1 game you might be interested in.

I actually wasn't ever sure if playing a PS2/PS1 game signed me off PSN or not!

But it just shows idling?

:/

It would absolutely be possible, re: CDDB/SCUS data and whatever the equivalent is for DVDs and BRDs, but it'd force me to rename every movie or game trailer I have stored on my hard drive to some variant on 'clownporn.avi.' Also, they'd need to fix the whole issue with DVD, BRD, and PS2 signing you out of PSN (which is probably impossible). There's literally nothing in the way of making it work for PS1 games or movies/music stored on the HDD though, they'd just need to enable access to those databases (and maybe, since the ones for PS1 and PS2 games is small enough, store it locally as a simple text file).

Same vein, but I'd like for there to just be groups. Then I join the NeoGaf group, and everyone in that group has become a friend. (Granted they would have to lift the 50 cap (have they already?))

Also, more info about the game they are playing, with the ability to jump in if the game allows.

I hate that they changed it like this. Having to open up the menu with triangle then clicking on "create new message" is annoying. The old way of just pressing X on their username was so much better and more intuitive. I know they love their virtually useless and slow-loading trophy cards but burying an often-used feature to replace it with a rarely used one is just dumb.

Also: The clock-battery.

Are we sure playing a PS2/1 game sets your status to idle? Whenever I quit the game I always get the message "signed in" appear in the top right. That would kinda suggest I wasn't just idle but actually signed out.

That's because leaving a PS2 game signs you out for some reason. Sometimes I notice users have the "busy" icon over their name and their comment is "Playing Xenosaga" or whatever.

Wow, for a second there, I thought Sony had implemented this, and I was amazed at such a great idea. This is truly something I can see improving XBL and PSN alike.

i wish you could turn alerts on for certain people and off for others (especially that annoying person who is allways logging in and out)

i guess if you could have groups, you could break it down with that

A minor addition, but show a person's Trophy Level next to their name or something, instead of having to dig into the gamercard thing.

It's been 100 since last June.

Groups would be ace.

I'd also like the friends list to:

Automatically put my status as away if there is no activity for 5 minutes
Show if I'm watching a movie, listening to music, PS store, browser etc

Being able to place a comment on each friend when I accept them would be helpful in knowing who the hell they are. Like a comment could be "GAF KZ2" or "GAF TROLL" :lol

Nice ideas. But also have the option to turn that on or off.
