PSN Network and PS PLUS - Long way to go

Really? Are you comparing the approach because of nationality? Sony's online infrastructure, approach and execution is significantly ahead of Nintendos. Sony doesnt have the same problems as the Wii U *at all*.

eh...no. Nothing to do with nationality as much as I wonder if the online experience is a priority in Japan. Kind of like how making the wii U smaller and far less power consuming is a bigger deal there because of how people game and utilize the systems in their households.

The seamless online/microtransaction infrastructure thing seems to be a western initiative, which, as we can see, works great in systems like Apple, PCs, Steam, and Xbox. I've noticed that with Wii U and PSN on PS3, the problems (imo) were similar. Very slow and unpolished system and UI, as opposed to the aforementioned western systems that work so well that you take them for granted. Reminds me of MGS Online and previous attempts at online integration back in the day. The exception was Phantasy Star Online - which was ahead EVERYBODY.

Just thinking aloud...

Also, has anyone tried downloading the PSN Uncharted 3 yet? I think I'm doing it wrong. I downloaded the Single Player game. The language packs were optional according to the official page. I also downloaded the MP free to play. I install the SP game and it disappears once the install is complete, with no option to launch it. There's no replacement icon or ANYTHING.

I install the MP game, and that's all i've got now. The F2P MP game works fine, but no SP - which is all that I wanted in the first place.

Now i'm downloading the SP game AGAIN. Sigh.

Considering how far it's come from the days of using the console web browser as the store front, among other issues, I think it's fair to say they'll absolutely bring it up to par with XBL.

In fact, they seem to have fixed one of the biggest problems in making the UI incredibly snappy on PS4 and I'm sure that snappiness will extend to stuff like the Store.

Saying that, if there's one think I hope they fix, it's the download system. I hate that it doesn't automatically start downloads in the background (as is the case on 360). It's an extra, unnecessary button press and delay...

Posting this while my ps3 has just locked up loading the store. The sooner Sony can brush the ps3 architecture and the current psn store under the rug the better.

games can be browsed and bought via a PC now, and downloaded straight from your list. this is typically how I purchase things lately.

Isn't download speed dependant on the broadband/bandwith provider? I'm seriously not much of a techie to be knowledgable about this.

How can everyone say "This issue won't be there for the PS4"? No one here has had a hands-on with the network. It's disingenuous to say anything even remotely like that.

We can HOPE that speeds will be better, but we don't know. We can't know until it launches. C'mon guys.

Because the issues with PSN on PS3 are strictly PS3 hardware issues (Limited system RAM & outdated wi-fi card). These are non-issues on both PS Vita & the PS4.

The PS3 wasn't built with PSN in mind from the ground up, and it shows.

The Vita was, and has almost none of the issues users complain about with the PS3. Download speeds seem to vary a lot, with some users having no issues, and some having slow speeds. There's no definitive answer as to why this is, but some models of PS3 are known to have poor wifi cards.

Owning a Vita and seeing that OS wipes away any worries for future Sony firmwares, stores, and so forth. Shit is snappy, has all you need.

PS3's ram situation is what hamstrung its OS and holds it back. Guess what PS4 and Vita have good ol portions of in response.

Normally yes, but PS3 has an issue where it only uses a single connection for downloads. This the speed of the connection and vary greatly overtime. It can start out fast, but then begin to slowdown. It doesn't try to renegotiate a higher speed when the connection slows down, it just drops to the slower speed and stays there.

I have a 50Mbps connection, and I normally see downloads off PSN as less than 8Mbps. I saw a post in another PS3GAF thread that commented about using a proxy server. I installed the recommended proxy server on the server I run in my house which is on 24/7. I then configured by PS3 to use the proxy server and suddenly PSN downloads starting downloading at the full speed of my connection.

What drove me to seek out the fix was a was trying to install a bunch of things off PSN which totaled around 36GB or so. I had it started it up in the evening and let it run overnight. I checked it when I woke up and it only downloaded about 16GB in about 10 hours. I found the proxy fix, and downloaded the other 20GB in less than an hour.

Vita.

You don't have anything to worry about if the PS Store and installing are your concerns. According to Tidux (or DemonNite sorry I forget), the store is built into the UI and installing is non existent, at least not to the user.

Also, Sony's constant reminder of being "instant" tells me they will improve download speeds.

As I understand it, the single player download of Uncharted 3 is kind of like a DLC for the F2P MP game. So if you've got the SP installed, just download the F2P MP game, launch it, and you should be able to play single player from there.

I can't say 100% though, as I finished Uncharted 3 on disc and didn't think much of it, so I haven't bothered downloading it again on PS+.

I'd use my Vita as an example of why performance will improve. It gives me a much more consistent download speed as opposed to my PS3. When the Vita says a download will be complete in 15 minutes, it does 15 minutes or less. Not to mention I feel like it has a weaker Wi-Fi Module, I only have a %50-ish connection with my Vita compared to my %100 with PS3. And seeing as how I max out at 3-4 mbps, I'm in good shape with the PS4 if everything works like its supposed to.

So while I suspect XBL experience will remain superior - and it pretty well should running 3 OS and focusing so much on the non-gaming applications and snap and shit like that - it'll not be superior enough to overcome the insane values of PS+ as far as I'm concerned (unless they start offering their own insane values - the free games offered for Gold so far have been paltry and almost embarrassing by comparison to Sony's month-by-month offerings).

Actually the PS4 doesn't need 3 OSs like the XB1 to achieve the same multimedia functionality. The reason is because the PS4's OS is based on FreeBSD 9, so that means it has a built-in Linux-compatibility layer. There's no doubt that the Linux-compatibility layer will be used for Apps. Just like Windows 8 on XB1 will be used for Apps.

There's more info in the following video:

It's been said, but I'm not nearly so concerned after how great PSN functionality on Vita has been compared to the PS3 equivalent. PS4 PSN should be better still I'd imagine... In fact it would take a lot to fuck it up as far as I can see.

Picked up a used PS3 Slim and Last of Us to go with my yearlong PS Plus membership. Most of this gen, I've had X360 with Gold. It's not my first time to the PS3 Online rodeo, but the last time I used it, they were still ironing things out.

Graphical horsepower and first party offerings aside - this PSN experience is going to KILL the PS4 if they don't dramatically improve it. The online store is slow and laggy. Some of the functionality - like seeing if you're actually downloading something - is counter-intuitive as it requires leaving the menu and skimming the networks tab. Downloading large games isn't the end of this slow crawling nightmare, but INSTALLING them takes forever, too!

While not Wii U bad, this experience reminds me of how seamless buying or doing ANYTHING on Xbox Live has been. You download a game from their lightning fast servers, you install a patch that takes 2min max, then you're playing the game. Buy directly from your Xbox 360 or queue it up on your computer via Xbox.com.

PSN can offer free games all day - which is cool - but getting to play, say, Uncharted 3 Single Player has been a 3 1/2 hour process so far. In order for Sony to win, this MUST be overhauled. MS has this in the can.

Welcome to TLoU bandwagon, hope you enjoy it :-)

Firstly I've heard the PSN store is apparently integrated into the UI of the PS4, Also the PS store on Vita is much better, so there is hope, but they certainly have something to prove on this front.

Secondly regarding installing them too, the PS4 installs as downloading and does not require the game to be fully downloaded before playing, this obviously removes the installing step after download.

I've never had any complaints about PSN speeds and I usually download a few games from PS+ every month. I'm not usually in any hurry though, I just click download and wait for it to finish, I don't keep checking the download progress or anything,

C'mon son, this bait thread is silly as ever. We've known for how long now that almost all of these issues are already taken care of on PS4, hell even PS Vita.

Goodness...

I'm looking at an install progress bar for Demon's Souls right now, OP. It's lame. Very lame.

But it's all been apparent for a while but there's nothing that can be done about the PS3 side of things. It was designed this way and that's that.

It will be better on PS4, and the vids we've seen of the UI and some other stuff has been promising. We won't know for sure until launch, but the theme of the PS4 since it was a glint in Mark Cerny's eye has been "learn from what went wrong on PS3 and do it right this time." Have faith.

They sure as hell better get it right, because they'll be slaughtered by us power users if not.

Even still, we know that downloading a game is an instant thing, depending on your connection, so that concern is gone. There is no install.

We know cross game chat exists, it's on Vita, and there's a "Parties" tab on PS4.

Downloading...is this a serious complaint? I mean, legitimately, if you can play your games moments after starting the download...who cares where you can see it? Even more importantly, who cares if you can see what you're downloading anyway? Is your memory that bad? You can see the bubbles in the games tab on PS3, so you know when it's done, and that is all that's important really. Leave it on, peace out.

The thread would be fine if PS Plus was left out of the title. His entire critique is of PSN. PS Plus is just there to get clicks. You can't get much better than 70+ free game rentals a year that last the duration of your ongoing subscription. I end up saving the price of my annual membership in various discounts over the course of a year.

The OP just reads like "Hey guy's, I touched a PS3 in a store, and really haven't followed PS4, but here are my redundant thoughts on what they can improve, despite having already improved them on one platform."

I hope they resolve these issues as well. A big part of the lag might be due to hardware. To be fair though, Uncharted 3 is a huge game

Sony is already on the record in saying the reason why it's a mandatory paywall for Playstation Plus (for PS4's online features), is because they're using it for a new PSN specifically for the PS4.

I love how people complain about PSN store or download speeds and fail to mention what kinda of internet connection they have or where they are from. Are you on wired or wireless?

BTW, Uncharted 3 is a HUGE game. Of course it takes hours to download. It's not a PSN issue it's a file size issue.

They addressed this during E3. With the process in the background, and being able to play before the download is completed.

In others words, they know.

Ideally, on the PS4, you could start playing after a few minutes and literally download the game as you reach each point. That'd be awesome. I can see a few indie games going all VibRibbon and doing stylized glitch effects based on how finished the game it.

Can I have that link? Never heard anything of it. Would be really awesome if true.

OT but I'm surprised people are even downloading the behemoth that is Uncharted 3.

I thought infamous 2 was unreasonable when I saw it on PS+ a year ago at somewhere in the 20 gbs.

I have both games on disc but then it doesn't surprise me when games like MGS4, GoWIII, Heavy Rain, Beyond:Two Souls, and Gran Turismo 5 never made it onto the PS3's digital store front even though I wish they were on it.

I usually only hear about download complaints from people who download things wirelessly. On a wired connection, things download pretty fast...at least for me *shrugs*

Most of the issues that people seem to have with the PS3 and the PSN doesn't really have anything to do with PSN itself, and more to do with the system and it's OS. I think Sony has a pretty clear idea of what people did and didn't like about the PS3 experience, and those things look to be addressed with the PS4. Even download speeds seem to be somehow tied to the system itself, as I recently updated the firmware on my router and my download speeds improved dramatically.

The only thing I am worried about is how well Sony handles the massive load the PSN is going to see on November 15th. That will be the true test. If I can bring my system home at 12am PST, connect to PSN, and start downloading a game at halfway decent speeds, then they will be golden.

With the massive demand they are seeing leading up to launch, and the major focus on digital downloads, I have to imagine that they are putting a lot of effort and money into making sure it is a smooth launch. But, only time will tell.

I've bought all my games digitally on PS3 but I've noticed that for me at least downloads have been going much faster. I mean not amazing fast but much faster. First game I bought was Ni No Kuni and that took me all night plus some of the morning where as I got GTA V the other day and it only took 3 hours (lol).

PSN has always been slow for me, and my system is connected directly to my router via an Ethernet cord. I'll get anywhere from 300 KBPS to 2 MBPS depending on the day. On Steam and similar sites, I'll get a steady 3 MBPS+. It took my 6 hours to download The Last of Us for instance. I similar sized game on PC would have been done in 1.5-2 hours.

That said, download speeds used to be worse. I rarely broke 300 KBPS back when I first got the system in 2008. Back when we got the free games for the PSN shutdown (2009?), it took me 15 hours to download Infamous, and that was after I waited a week for things to settle down.
