That's an awful idea.

How bout a re-structuring of PSN Plus where all free content you get with it NEVER expires, and everyone gets six months free. Current paying users get an added six months free. Complimentary $30 bucks in your PSN Store wallet. PSN store schedule is restructured so that content releases every day, not just Tuesdays. Or even a free Sony bluetooth headset?

That's a little much, don't you think?

They need to earn my trust back to using the service with shit security.

Yes i feel they do owe me something as i had to take time to change my card details and passwords.

$30 x 77 million.

Yeah ...

Edit: Only PSN Plus? Even still ...

What are you talking about? We pay for the PSN in two ways: 1. The console itself has a price premium, and 2. The games themselves that Sony gets a cut of each and every one of.

Just because you're not paying a fee direct to Sony, doesn't mean you haven't paid for the PSN in other ways.

You're right, Sony doesn't "owe" us anything, but there is an expectation of support when you buy a product that people are simply not getting right now. You can tell these people to fuck off and potentially lose them as customers, or you can make things right. The ball is in Sony's court on this one, but I know which route I'd take.

Already confirmed in the faq on the blog that plus users will get 4 weeks plus prolonged sub for however many weeks PSN is down.

Thanks (to you and notworksafe) for the info -- I've been paying as little attention as possible to this until everything is concretely laid out -- last I'd seen was the initial EU package of:

free month trial of psn+ to regular users
free comp month of psn+ to psn+ subscribers
2 of 5 games to download from psn

And that wasn't even the plan for US, so I stopped paying attention and figured I'd wait for more information on the compensation package to be confirmed for US before worrying about it again, so I hadn't seen that yet.

IIRC, when Live went down for a week, you had 10 days or something to redeem your free copy of Undertow. It's not a perpetual offer.

If they were to do something with Infamous 2, I could see them doing a deal where you had a week to mail in a rebate, at which point you would get the purchase price of the game reimbursed.

Look at all the confusion just in this thread.

And then on hindsight the journalists start blaming Sony for miscommunication/poor communication, which is another topic altogether. Yes Sony haven't handled parts of this mess that well when it comes to communicating, but that does not absolve shit journalism. If you're not sure about something research it further, or hold back until you are.

Somebody was saying the other week the gaming podcasts were rife with discussing some of the FUD gone by like it was real.

If peons like us can take 5-10 minutes to do a bit of research and this isn't even our jobs/sector, god help journalists who can't.

Conclusion: Journalists should use GAF as a bullshit filter more often :P

this is the first post on the EU blog about the outage:

While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running. Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to this space for more details, and we’ll update you again as soon as we can.

For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com our @PlayStationEU twitter feed

that was Posted on 21 April .. today we have May the 9th... so PSN has been down 17 days. (or 18 if you are from another country in another timezone or from the future.. )

and originally people were pissed about the message about being down for 1-2 days.. here are some of the posts from the blog:

Thanks for the heads up on the potential wait ahead but man this sucks, a whole day or two? I have a friend travelling up to mine from the other side of Britain for a full weekend of PS3 also playing with an army mate in Germany, was really looking forward to it too, it sucks that this has to happen right when the weekend is about to start. I know a lot of people just got Socom 4, the new Operation Flashpoint, Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat to play online too… the timing is pretty unfortunate.

Also, can we expect some kind of compensation for this down time (Like a free theme or something tiny)? Or will it be a case of us having to go without PSN for 2 days before it gets fixed and Sony acts like absolutely nothing happened?

I swear, this better not happen during the Royal Wedding. If I have to watch the sycophantic public getting all kissy-face over those two little rats, then I’m going to go Killzone IRL.

Just got back early from friday sesh absolutely mullerd thinkin HOMEFRONT lets av it!! NOT A SNIFF!!! this should av been dealt with, well a least an idea of what has happened its 2days man surely there’s something u could tell us! Is it jus a coincidence that bear shizzle has gone down world over not jus PSN!

I´think we can all be VERY happy that the abbility to post on the EU blog is gone, or else..

At this point I personally wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo's very vaugely scheduled 3DS Store and the accompanying FW update come out before the PSN store or even the most basic PSN functions are restored. Yes it's more than a bit unlikely and a fair bit pessimistic but it wouldn't surprise me in the least

That part is official for every PAL psn users?
And I mean officially we'll get some ps3 psn games and some psp psn games?

for some of you this is the center of your life.........damn!

This a forum about videogames.

People that only own a PS3 cant play games online
People that own both xbox 360 and PS3 but have the PS3 version of a game cant play online
People that want to redeem online passes cant
People that want to redeem <insert_random_dlc> cant
People that want to buy stuff from the PS store cant.
etc.

And you wonder why people care ?

Uh, giving out five games would basically be like giving out Infamous 2 or some other full priced game. So, that's equally goofy.

I admit, I'm not that affected by this since PSN is a free service to me and I'll be getting free goodies out of something I've never paid for. But this mess all but solidifies that PSN will be a paid service in the next generation. And THAT pisses me off. =/
I don't understand your reasoning. Just because the retail price of 5 PSN games may equate to the retail price of Infamous 2 doesn't mean that it costs Sony as much. Especially when the people downloading them wouldn't have purchased them anyway. You can't lose money you were never going to earn.

And what would be different about this attack if PSN were a paid service versus free? How will making it a paid service change anything aside from making Sony even more culpable if it goes offline? I think it's a reach to say PSN will cost money in the future because of this attack when the cost of PSN had nothing to do with the attack. Unless you're implying that fees are how Sony will recoup costs related to this attack.

As much as i would like Infamous 2 to be free, i just don't believe it will happen. No matter which way you flip it.

With Infamous 2 their is NO DLC to make extra cash on.
It a highly anticipated game. Especially since the level editor was announced.

Sony have never been in the habit of throwing away money. They know Infamous 2 will sell.

edit: Actually they do throw away money. Just not with games, Only at people.
jk :)

Have they started sending out stuff for the identity theft service yet? I never received the 'hey we lost your data' email, so I'm concerned that I won't receive the other either.

My theory on the extended delay: they have most of the infrastructure and services working again right now but they're having a hard time 'porting' over all of the information that we have stored on their servers. All of our Trophies, messages, past purchases, and Cloud saves are giving them a headache because they aren't perfectly compatible with the new architecture that they've constructed.

And before anyone asks, I have no solid evidence to support this theory--it's just a hunch.

The could give the first infamous a way. I still haven't played that one. It would also hype up the 2nd one, for players like me that haven't played it.

Ok, so.....

I'm late here, but is May 31st referring to online as well?

Like, when can we reasonably expect online? In a few days, or closer to May 31st?
That statement was really ambiguous.

Actually I think there is DLC planned for the mission creator, LBP-style. But yeah, inFamous 2 won't be free.

hot off the presses. i wasted too much time on this.

We have no idea. They said last week the online part would be available last week, that ship has sailed.

Sony has said that we will get 2 PS3 games for free (out of 5 to choose from i think) in addition to the PS+ subscription/extra days.

Read the posts, junior. May 31st is the latest for EVERYTHING. They already stated that online gaming, friends lists, etc would be back before the store went up, so we should expect (hopefully) the basic online this week.

Anyone expecting inFamous 2 for free is doing a huge fuck you to Sucker Punch, those guys don't deserve such a fate.

Exactly. I'm thinking more like titles that have already sold a million + copies. Fact: People will use the PSN once online with or without free game offers.

No. There is no new news. Full service at May 31st at the latest. ....... maybe :'(

Doesn't say anything about basic functionality etc unfortunately.

Sony's communication has been terrible, from day 1, it always is when anything goes wrong.

It's a big story, it made the mainstream media, when a story is this big you have to be on top of it and not give people reason to doubt, be vague, or let people start filling in the gaps themselves. The onus is on Sony to restore confidence, keep people informed, and meet the deadlines they set.

It's not just gaming journalism where this happens, look what happens to Apple when there is even a whiff of a fuck-up. The Internet loves stuff like this. The difference is Apple come down really hard to put their side across, and then give dates for things to address it which they hit and kill the story.

The fallout from something like this was always going to be big, but Sony have made it far worse than it could have been by appearing clueless and vague throughout.

I definitely agree.

Wow, May 31st. Incredible.

Hopefully they get multiplayer gaming back up and running soon for you guys. This has been quite the odyssey.

Did that rumoured second (third?) attack that was being boasted about ever happen? It would be shitty if they were simply waiting for the network to come back up to attack again.

I really hope so.. I just started my second playthrough of Uncharted 2, so I have some great gaming before me, so I´m not in too much hurry for PSN coming back. But I would also like some kind of closure on this whole PSN debacle..

Yes, I would be quite happy with Mass Effect 2 Sony, *hint hint* :P

Me too. Sony could definitely benefit from some sort of Major Nelson type character. Someone whose sole job is communication with the masses.
Kevin Butler's Twitter account has been unusually quiet. :(

Gaming forum, dude. And people went back and forth on this for a lot of time on earlier threads, you're like, two weeks late on your fine critique of other people lifestyle.

May 31st seems like a terrible internal deadline. Especially since a month offline would hurt smaller publishers who are PSN exclusive and also impact multiplayer testing in PS3 titles. Sony should have had a stricter internal deadline.

Nightz said:

Kevin Butler isn't it. The Playstation blog pretty much serves the same function as Major Nelson.

After 5 RROD, 1 YLOD, and this I'm just done with this horrendous console generation. Bring PSN back so I can get my Portal 2 PC code and I'm selling these unreliable pieces of garbage and not looking back. Really can't wait to build a PC now.

What? Are you now going to tell me that Santa isn't real either?

I'm curious... does anyone here work in a game store? I'd be interested in knowing whether you feel this has affected PS3 hardware/software sales at retail.

Very informative post. Thanks for contributing to the thread.

Anyway, I am still disappointed that things are down. I just cancelld my Brink preorder :\ I'll be very surprised if we get online gaming back within the next 2 weeks. I wonder what MS is doing to bolster its own systems?

As for Sony's communications, while they have been lacking, I don't think some of you are appreciating the situation Sony is in. So much is just an unknown at this time. You can't fire off public statements from the hip.
