Save for the PC, of course. Were it not for the PC Master Gaming Race I'd go mad with all the fuck ups from the console manufacturers. .

This. The console world is getting to be an alien place for me. I've gaming online on PC for over a decade for free, so I can't imagine ever paying for a Xbox live type service. With the PS3 I have a hard time playing newer games since they are starting to look very dated with that ol 7900 churning in there. Nintendo is so far out in left field I'm not sure we even speak the same language anymore. Though I'd get a 3DS if it had a couple of M rated games with copious amounts of gore.

Bah. I just want PSN to come back so I can buy Portal on the PS3 to look at the pretty case, and register it on steam to play it with optimal controls.

Sony's had less bumps in the road than most other platform holders and this is the thanks you show them? I've been angry about this as much as the next guy but it takes a sane person to know when to push and when to forgive. I'm going to do my part by spending $80 on PSN when it comes back up and I suggest you do the same... I suggest everyone of the 77 million users do the same. Imagine what 1.6 billion dollars can do for a company like Sony after this kind of crisis. We should all be thinking about what we can do to help. If Sony goes down, could you seriously live with all those lost jobs on your head? My friend always said people in stone glasses can't through houses. He was right in many ways even though he was wrong in the head; I knew what he meant. You could learn a thing or two about optimism from him.

Why should we have to spend $80 in PSN funny money? Sony hasn't helped me in protecting my identity yet, and they did a piss poor job communicating us about how our personal information was stolen. Can't help this joke of a company if they're not willing to help me out first.

Next up: Removing the retarded de-bubbling feature of their downloads from their network. This is not good design, Sony.

I have no idea what it's doing, or why it's doing it, but it needs to knock the fuck off.

You have amazing restraint. I think if I were unable to have synched up my Portal 2 on day 1 to play on PC I would have broken down long ago and just bought a steam copy.

The hardest thing is hearing her cute laugh echoing down the hallway at seemingly every other minute from something at Portal 2. Is it really that funny, I wonder? Is she doing this to fuck with me? When is PSN coming up oh god--

This post makes no sense at all. Help Sony? Sony should be the one helping its users after this catastrophic breach of privacy and outage of their online service, not the other way around.

The funniest post of this thread. Well done. The sad part is, there are actually people who think in terms of 'helping' companies. They lurk amongst us, their suppurating foolishness aching to express itself.

What is de-bubbling?

When you download something and then you have to install your download. It makes no sense. The files size doesn't change, so it's not compression. The file's already on the hard drive, so it's not like it's being copied over from a disc. Everything the demo or DLC needs is already on the console, so it's not like it has to check to see if dependent programs are installed or not.

It's bad design. De-bubbling would get rid of the install portion.

Yeah, installing is lame. It takes long enough to d/l a 2+ gig demo, which makes it even worse when you have to install it separately. It just feels so antiquated.

Doesn't Microsauce have some sort of patent on it? I remember reading something about that.

lol do our part? excuse me.. LOL

Uh... some of the downloads off PSN are bigger than their file size. I'm not sure what's included (DRM rights?), but some stuff like MGS5/Peacewalker for PSP goes from 1.5gig to 1.2gig after the download and install.

It gets smaller after the install? What the crap?

The de bubbling gets real fun when you download whole games and it needs twice the hard drive space alloted just to install. Mass Effect 2 is 12 gigs in size and that was fine but I needed to wipe some stuff off my drive just to install it, which for some reason needed 24 gigs of space just for the time it took to install.

Yeah, I don't know what it loses. But it's weird. Some games get smaller in size on install. Some get slightly bigger. I'm not sure what the process wants.

So you're saying it required 36 GB of space?

Bravo.

Edit: This debubbling sounds like a bizarre thing. I choose to think of it as a malfunctioning bubblewrap machine.

Wha? ME2's still 12GB for me.

ScrubJay said:
No, 24 gigs. 12 to download, it takes up another 12 to buffer while installing.

That's weird. I know some installs want slightly more space to install the application, but 2x's the space of the download? WTF Bioware/EA.

This is the best thing I've read in this topic.

Oll Korrect! I was a little confused by your wording. Seems really strange that they don't still it while its downloading like most modern systems. I remember someone complaining on GAF a while back about how they freed up exactly the amount of space the download said it needed to install only to reach 99% of they way and be told they're out of space and were forced to free up more space and try again. Seems like a real hassle. I try to stay on top of freeing space. People forget that just because the PS3 has a big refrigerator that it doesn't need to be cleaned out.

^^ I usually keep about 20 gigs clear because I hear load times get nasty if you're down to less than a certain amount of HD space, the time that happened I didn't have a computer and was storing a bunch of music and video files on my PS3.

CatPee said:

Sorry, maybe my wording wasn't clear. Once the installs done the original "bubble" file is deleted, just leaving the installed file. ME2 is definitely 12 gigs, but for the 20 minutes or so it needed to install it used 24.

Suprised none of you have seen this before, when you buy something off the store there's a disclaimer in the store window that says something to the effect of "This product needs 2x it's file size for installation".

Yup. And it's not even like a short time period. Big games take a substantial amount of time to de-bubble.

I wouldn't mind it if there was some rhyme or reason to the process. if I was receiving some benefit for it. But there isn't. It's just insane design by an incompetent Sony :P

The download is an archive like a tarball (.tar), not necessarily compressed, which contains all the files for the game. This is used so that you only download one file and not thousands at a time. During the installation process the PS3 unpacks the archive and puts the files into the correct places in the PS3 filesystem hierarchy. It does all make sense but Sony should do a better job of hiding the process from the user.

Then how come you don't have to do that on the other platforms?

How does it make sense though?

ON Xbox Live or WiiWare, download one file and it's ready to play the second the download is finished. Am I missing why Sony needs to do it this other way?

I actually think this is a significant issue with their service. It's a big irritant, particularly when I download 5 or 6 things in a night and then come back and gotta waste time de-bubbling it all.

I think it simply boils down to the fact that Microsoft are muuuuch more apt at software/systems development than Sony.

I am assuming that Xbox is decompressing as it is receiving the data. Or that it downloads uncompressed data, but that would be a strange waste of bandwidth.

You're right - it is annoying. For overnight downloads, though, if you tell the ps3 to shut down after downloads, it will have uncompressed everything for you. Even when I don't want the ps3 to shut down, it's an easy way to tell when your downloads are over.

I suspect the other services are untar-ing the file as they download it or it is done after the download but while the download bar is still shown. 100% agree that Sony's implementation should be better.

Well, if you include them in the discussion, you need to start considering all their other shortcomings as well. :P I guess it's hard to discuss specifics when not much is known about the underlying file systems and content delivery solutions... But yes, the PS3 does have an inelegant solution. Would've been much better if the console could unpack downloaded stuff automatically after the download's finished.

They should add an option to auto-install upon download competition just like the one already in place when you set the system to turn off after download.

They should do it the way it's done on Xbox Live.

It must be decompressing as it receiving the data. And this is not a novel idea either.

Before tar was mentioned, so just throw a gz, bzip or 7zip on that and that functionality is there. And tar is at least 24 years old.
