So anyone try the new Snestyl yet?
I just did.

- Full speed 60FPS Donkey Kong Country, with sound and no frameskip
- Full speed Yoshi Island with sound off and frameskip 1

I'm not joking.

Yoshi used to be the slowest game I tried in the old release and it runs full speed now.

damn I haven't booted a SNES emulator on the PSP in a while, but I gotta check that out.

I'm not getting anywhere close to full speed in DKC with sound and no frameskip. No matter what I do I'm not getting close to full speed.

I really haven't seen any performance improvements over the last version. Super Mario World runs great, nothing else I've tested is at full speed.

Go into the Hack/Debug menu and try doing the following:

Speed hacks: on
Ignore fixed coloring: on
Ignore Palette writes: on

I'm getting like 60-80fps! And that is with full 44 khz sound and 0 frameskip!

Yeah, you have to fiddle with settings, but speed improvement is mind boggling, especially in Yoshi. I got it to run full speed now with no frameskip O_o

*edit* also, in DKC, the speed differs from level to level. It's probably the same in other games. Because of that it's probably safer to leave frameskip at 1, to have more consistent framerate.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm getting better speeds in DKC now.

It does come at a cost, though. It's cool to see good speed in DKC, but when it's at the cost of background detail, it's not quite far enough along for me to seriously play it on the PSP. Still, it's a step closer. Portable full speed SNES is going to be amazing.

Ignore Palette writes: on
Don't do this. When you enable this in DKC, you lose the background layer (but gain a lot of speed, true). However, DKC works at full speed with frameskip 1 even if you keep this at OFF.

The new Snestyl...has finally made portable snes a credible possibility! I will never throw away my old snes carts, but now I can put them into deep storage.

Anyone notice that some homebrew programs have problems with mem sticks formatted as FAT32? They wont list the contents of directories properly, so my damn 1GB stick has to be formatted as FAT16.

It doesn't help that the D-pad pretty much makes it unplayable too.

Though under the new SNES emu (0.2c version), I got full speed on Super SF2 at 1 frameskip.

Still can't do hurricane kicks constantly.

someone help me :_;

What settings should I set it @ for chrono.

snesTYL v.02.

Nevermind, found some, going to try it out...

i find it amusing i'm running parodius better than gradius 3

pretty much everything else i've tried outside of mario all stars has run like ass.

Has anyone tried out that stuck pixel remover movie? Does it work? I just turned on my psp to put in the new snes emulater and found a cluster of 25 stuck pixels near the middle of the screen. They only appear on blue backgrounds.

Never did a damn thing on my first PSP.

Did they just appear out of the blue? (sorry no pun intended :))

r type 3 and pocky + rocky still run like shit. r type 3 and pocky + rocky are practically the whole point of an snes. but with the author of that AMAZING neo cd emu on board, i suppose it's only a matter of time before this shapes up.

Yeah just today. Used it in the morning for a bit, turned it off. Then the next time I turned it on they were there.

I thought I was lucky when I got the psp at launch with no dead pixels. Oh well, guess I'll try the video for a couple hours.

edit: so I left it going for an hour or so, nothing happened. I'm going to leave it on overnight.

edit2: still nothing. This sucks, hopefully they'll eventually light up on blue again since they're stuck, not dead.

So I tried Untold Legends (European version) today, below the game in the PSP menu appeared a choice to update to 1.50 but I already have 1.50 anyway. So is it always optional, or did it become optional because I already have 1.50?

Also, after hearing about the extreme loading for the game I was kind of worried, but they haven't been bad so far. Only tried it out a little...does the loading get much worse later on?

No, the length of load times doesn't get any worse, but the frequency of loading can get high as later quests have you traversing multiple dungeons in sequence (load between each) and if you have a tendency to pick up all the loot that gets dropped, you'll find the game is very generous to the point that you'd have to warp back to town frequently (more loading) to manage your encumberance.

Hmm, there's a program out that tricks the PSP into thinking it's 1.52 system, which allows you to play games requiring an update.

So, anyone tried if this worked yet? Come on is there anyone out there brave enough?!

Yeah, version 2.0 is out. I tried that one. I thought it was a little suspicious because you have to have the PSP plugged in with the AC adaptor for it to work. But, the WAB team made it so I figured I would give it a go. So, I did it, went to system information and sure enough, it had been changed to version 2.0. I then proceeded to run the program again and changed it back with no problem whatsoever.

I guess playing GTA: Liberty City Stories won't be much of an issue now with this and freeloader 0.7 out.

Watch, instead of merely checking the version number variable games will start doing md5 hash checks on firmware files. They should've witheld this until GTA came out.

EDIT: Hahaha, the comments on PSPupdates are hilarious. I don't know how these people manage to breathe without assistance.

Exactly, Fastloader 0.7 did the trick for now, no need for that new thingie.

But whats worse, future games may not only use more extensive checking routines, they might actually use functionality new to 2.0

Hmmm just no...with 0.2c DKC runs far away from 60FPS...

Is there any website that is crazy enough to list settings for games using the SNES TYL as I really don't see any improvments over SNES Y edition.

CastleVania IV runs better on SNES Y, with FrameSkip 3-4 of course but anyways...

You must be high, TYL is dramatically faster with every game.

You have it set to PSP accerlated, right? And speed hacks turned on? Yes, right, hmm?

Like what? 2.0 doesn't add any new features that a game could use.

Funny, it ran full-speed for me on the previous version with no frameskip.

Would someone please be so kind to recommend the best emulators for the following systems?

SNES
Genesis
NES
Sega Master System/GameGear
Gameboy/Gameboy Color
Turbographx 16/Turbo CD

I've been out of touch for the past couple of weeks...

Thanks! (I think this kind of question is allowed, right?)

SNES 9x TYL or whatever it's called
I think PSPGenesis is better than DGEN, but DGEN has a sweet interface
NesterJ
don't know
RIN
Neither emulator has been updated in months

Thank you very much. :)

PSPGenesis is definitely better performance-wise than DGEN. Much more consistent in-game performance as well. Neither has perfect compatability yet, where DGEN works with a few games that don't work with PSP Genesis, and vice versa. A point in DGEN's favor though is that the coder working on PSPGenesis mentioned a few weeks back that he's gotten busy in other aspects of his life so updates to PSPGen will be infrequent unless someone else picks up the slack. Meanwhile, there have been a couple of updates to DGEN in the same time period.

Argh. I'm afraid that the secret to Turbo CD loading as of yet eludes me. Frustrating, since I own the original CDs and am ripping them myself into a more PSP friendly format. *sighs*

It seems complicated at first, but really isn't that bad. You just need the TOC file for each game.

I don't think this has been posted yet:

Tonight Booster, who also created the PSP Hook Boot Launcher, has released his PSP Device Hook Launcher v0.10! Similar to Fastloader, PSP Device Hook allows you to launch complete .iSO format files from your MS on your v1.00 or v1.50 firmware PSP handheld... but it doesn't require a UMD to be present in the drive!

I've installed the SNES emulator, and the games are working great for me when using CPU clock: 333 Mhz and maybe 1 frameskip.

I held off on using SNES games, because I thought they would be almost unplayable for me, I'm very picky, but I am very pleased right now.

Can anyone confirm that PSP Device Hook Launcher v0.10 works really well?

I don't get this program? Is this just an alternative to the fast loader 0.7? And if that is true, does it offer all the features like 333 mhz clock speed and UMD dumping?

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Looks like my rips were perfect after all. I have a utility that scans a CD game and creates a TOC for me, but it looks like the formatting of the TOC it creates is a bit off. So I had to manually go in and edit them. Also, I was selecting the wrong CD-ROM boot cards for some games. Got Ys III working! Now I'm trying to get my original rips of Ys I&II and Ys IV working (I hope the fan-translation patch of Ys IV doesn't bork the emu...)

Ok, I just tried it out and it works fine for me. Yes it offers those features as well. I'm very please about this, since I no longer need to keep that UMD sampler in my PSP all the time now. :D
