Whats the biggie with the gps sucking all the psp battery? Arent you sopose to use the gps in your car? And if thats the case just buy a power adapter for the car..there, problem solved. It will be good for those longs trips...
The only biggie is that some people don't realize that it isn't a biggie.
Modern GPS receivers don't take a lot of power.
People just assume that because Wifi takes a lot of power, GPS would as well.
It doesn't.

just doing some quick research on Amazon.com, the Magellan Explorist 210 gets 17 Hrs of life off of 2 AAs.

That settles it, afaik

ORLY?

Mission accomplished.

JARLY, I have a PSP, a DS and a Tom Tom GPS. I'm guessing my real life experience with this at least equals yours. Driving with a non touch screen GPS = annoying. Perhaps I should narrow it down to "useless in a car compared to a touch screen unit"

But what would the performace be for a GPS on a DS?

See, now that last statement clears up what you meant nicely.
I was also wondering what you meant, but I've never had to use a GPS in the car, so now I know and I agree that it would be better (for that purpose) on DS.
For general use, however, I'm sure the analog stick and a cursor will sufice.

No idea - the main performance issue for GPS is the GPS hardware and the signal attenuation etc. Processing? DS should be good, PSP should be wicked good. Screens? DS has two, PSP has one really nice one so that's almost a wash.

The PSP's ability to get a signal in one second is impressive. My dedicated unit can take 10-20 seconds after a long sleep.

What does this mean?

It means he can be using his GPS receiver, put it to sleep for a week, turn it back on and it takes 10-20 seconds to locate itself on the globe. In comparison, the PSP apparently only takes 1 second

Damn that's fast. And we are really getting this for $50? Sounds a little to good to be true.

Up tp 40 seconds according to one of the slides if I am reading it correct.

Too bad the PSP screen is barely visible in the sun at all... It kind of defeats any potential GPS usefulness.

Oh shit, I actually forgot about this. Yeah, forget using it on summer camping trips I guess... :lol :(

who the hell is going to buy these accesories? I just want to play my PSP games in peace
So the release of these accessories impedes your ability to play games on your PSP? You probably need a witch doctor to check you out for possible curses or other black-magic conditions.

Yeah, I think you're right on this one. I think it takes up to 40 seconds from a cold start, and will update at a rate of every 1 second.

IGN reporting a few more details, mostly about the camera:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/729/729652p1.html

For still shots, the camera offers 1.31 megapixel of resolution, allowing for stills of either 480x272 or 640x480. The camera can take shots from distances of 40cm and up, or you can switch to macro mode for taking pictures from 7cm away. A digital zoom feature lets you zoom in on the scene before snapping away. Shots are saved in the JPEG format.

When taking movies, the camera is capable of 30fps video at 480x272 resolution, although you're limited to 15 seconds of footage at a time. Once you've taken a video, you can edit with 74 different effects. You can also add add background music, although the unit has has a monaural microphone capable of recording linear PCM directly. Footage can be viewed directly on the PSP, or you can convert it to AVI and transfer it to a PC through Memory Stick. The native format for the movies is Motion JPEG.
