Clearly, this week, Las Vegas is the world capital of overstimulation (and mile-long lines to buy a hot dog or board a shuttle bus). Today was the official opening of the Consumer Electronics Show, and here are some quick impressions so far.

- While everyone spent 2005 focusing on the iPod as the must-have portable media device, Sony was selling PlayStation Portables like crazy: 200,000 a week during the Christmas selling season, the company said

I wonder how accurate this information is, but if true, the PSP had a fantastic december.

So over sold 1 million for the DS and PSP isn't impossible.
well if it's 200k/week wouldn't that make it 800k for december? which is quite awesome and I imagine the DS did just as well.

December = 5 weeks if we go by the NPD calendar.

Well both Sony and Nintendo released reports about sales for the PSP and DS and for them to be accurate both handhelds would have had to sell over a million units in December alone. Unless... they were including Canada or something.

I suppose it depends on whether or not 'Christmas selling season' means the period from Thanksgiving through until Christmas - or if they were just referring to the couple of weeks directly before Christmas, which would be the biggest spending period (outside of black Friday - which would have already been accounted for in November's NPD). I'm guessing that they just meant the couple of weeks before Christmas, because sales wouldn't be steady at 200,000 per week for the full month from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Sales would have ramped up as Christmas got closer. I could see sales being pretty strong the week after Christmas as well because of gift certificates.

In any case, we should have actual numbers in just under a week.

I bet those 200k per week were how much they were selling when combined with all the other regions. :P

j/k

Sony said 500K till mid december in NA. So maybe like so:
135K
165K
200K
250K
150K
------
900K for December in NA? So around 50K Canada and 850K in the US?

Let the spin...begin :D

You could say a lot about these numbers

4 weeks?
5 weeks?

EXACTLY 200,000?

Averaged?

Maybe it was closer to 250,000 a week for 5 weeks :D
Or 180,000 a week for 4 :D :D
