PSP Remaster Series Announced for PlayStation 3

It's hard to tell if they're improved as the resolution of the PSP version is so low it masks any detail in the textures.

I know. But would they put that much detail in PSP textures considering the low res screen? That would be a waste no?

Not saying they have re-drawn the textures from the PSP version. Perhaps they already have original higher res textures designed like that and stored somewhere, the PSP game using lower res versions of those.

It's happened with Wii games so it could definitely happen with PSP games. Take a look at the texture differences between Dolphin games and Wii games, there's a huge difference even though they're exactly the same assets, no reason to think the same isn't happening with the PSP to PS3 releases.

well, FF XII textures is totally wasted on PS2 if you see the HD screencap from PCSX2. maybe something similar happen here.

This notably happens with HD games as well. The 360 and PS3 definitely aren't displaying full asset quality on the biggest games.

There's only one title listed so far, right?

As long as the game has 3D perspective, this will always be the case to some extent ;).

As an example TTP, this is what Aqua's character model in Birth By Sleep actually looks like when run through a renderer: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OLnl438ZY44/TNRkcIuFAqI/AAAAAAAAAIM/gmr-c1fmXpE/s1600/AQUA.png

Obviously most of the textures and modeling in the game aren't anywhere near that high quality, but since the character draws a lot of attention, just being able to mostly render that will be a huge improvement.

For sure. It's just that as the generation wears on, the difference between displayed assets and assets on the disc gets a bit comical.

The Monster Hunter upscale looks fantastic. The 3D Square Enix and Peace Walker game/s would probably look fantastic if they're upscaled.

I hope someone interviews Sony if there are trophies or not though.

holy shit, if monsterhunter uses ps3's online structure then fuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!
FUUUUUU anyway! shit, this is exciting!

it'll use psp adhoc party structure. which give me hope that this is just enhanced emulation rather than straight port job.

I agree.

Don't know what's taking so long with Red Dead Redemption PC.
Imagine that at max settings, highest res and AA...

This shouldn't have taken so long to happen. But I'm all for it. Please, Monster Hunter on PSN in the west.

So the on disc assets are usually of an higher quality than what a given resolution would allow to appreciate? I didn't know that. I assumed since memory is always an issue devs would avoid to fill it with unnecessary details. Unless there is a process that lowers the assets resolution when moving them from disc to RAM.

In any case the difference with MH3 looks more pronounced to me than that of the Zelda above. The carpet for example. In the HD version the string that twists around the edge (above the button icons in the bottom right corner) does more "twists" compared to the original one. (Sorry hard to explain in words).

the only reason why it can happen now is because NGP is coming soon and PSP is nearing the end of it's life cycle.

Boom, headshot!

I guess this concretely rules out the 0.1% possibility of a PSP player in the PS3 XMB/OS in the future, haha.

This was sort of already happening on a smaller scale with some titles, like that one Jak game a year or two ago, Tekken Dark Resurrection HD and Twisted Metal: Head On, and a couple of others.

I'm guessing games like the two God of Wars, Dissidia, Crisis Core, Birth by Sleep, Valkyria Chronicles II and Peace Walker are shoo-ins for this.
Tekken 5 DR PS3 wasn't a psp port, just to let you know. It was an arcade port. It lacked all the single player content from the psp version. I wished it was a psp port though...

It'd be very surprising if these games don't have trophy support. These are being positioned as the PSP version of the HD Classics, and all of those games have trophy support.

Considering there's save game transfer, trophies wouldn't work too well.

The PSP versions of the game would have to be patched to "record" earned trophies, so you win them when you transfer them back to the PS3.

Nothing like that, it's just they don't show up well at low resolution and low quality texture filtering.
Some PSP games, especially early ones are notorious for very low resolution textures though, and this wouldn't fix that problem.

Yeah, the have to make certain assets very high quality for when they cover most of the screen.

They reduce the quality though based on distance through a process known as level of detail.

Though there's also just the assets looking worse due to image quality factors (anti-aliasing, texture filtering, lighting errors) even at full detail.

The PlayStation Store is already a bit messy when it comes to categories. Now they are throwing a fuck ton more in there with this and NGP.

I think they might have something new in mind when the NGP launches. There's no way their current store can sustain what they are trying to do.

I love my PSP, but only really use it for racing games and RPGS because I never wanted to play action games using the nub, only two shoulder buttons and with no right stick.

So this is fantastic news to wake up to.

Lets hope so. They also need to tidy up the XMB a bit. Put a few more things in folders etc.

Yeah, must be the LOD. I guess the balancing act from a memory management standpoint is figuring out which assets are bound to get inspected from up close and create high quality assets for those alone, keeping the rest low res.

This would explain why the armor texture on the main character in that MH3 pic doesn't look improved as much as the environment around him. Character is at fixed distance from camera. Environment elements do not. So the latter benefits from the superior assets quality already in place in the PSP version.

Awesome news. This seamless gaming home or on the go looks like a first step towards PS3-NGP integration.

And please sony, release ARTIC EDGE for PS3 please.

They're going to have to figure something out. Mini's and PSone classic's are the only PS3 compatible games right now that don't have trophies. And in both of those cases it makes sense that they wouldn't have trophy support. Trophies are a main feature in PS3 released games now. And these aren't simple dumps of games (like the minis and PSone classics are), they're adding additional content to them so they're going to have a hard time explaining why they wouldn't have trophies.

Interesting move... I wonder what it means for PS3/NGP games. Will we be able to buy a single game for Playstation platform and play it on NGP or on PS3? I was very sceptical concerning this "start a game session on NGP and finish it on PS3" many people expect but it seems to me that it's starting to flesh out with this move.
