Thank you Sony for throwing everything and the kitchen sink into this beast of a device.
Gorgeous screen.
Lots of control options for innovative games.
Beefy hardware specs and real dual analogs for console-like games.
Backwards compatible with PSP games is very cool and unexpected.

I admit the thing looks a bit ugly and not the sexiest thing to be seen with in public.
But I would probably only play the thing at home anyway, so I guess the big size might actually be a good thing since I assume it would be more comfortable to hold. (iPhone 4 = too small to be really comfortable to hold - especially when you have headphones plugged into the jack)
I thought the same about PSP but once it's in your hands, you cannot resist the beauty of the screen and tech driving.

i really hope they release it within this year worldwide, missing christmas/blackfriday season would be awful. They cannot let this be PS3 again, please.

I think i will sell my umds and purchase PSN versions if available to have something to play at launch, unless they show something awesome at e3

I'd be wary of doing that until they confirm you can play any or all games from your existing account. Hopefully it will be the case though.

OLED screens look magnificient, and you can bet Samsung and perhaps even Apple and its iPhone 5 will use it this year.
This is why time to market is critical for Sony, they can't afford to wait for their wow factor to be commoditized. They need to release this year in all 3 regions, and target a September launch even if few games are ready, the PSP store should make up for it.

They've been out on Android phones for over a year now. The Nexus One/S, Samsung Galaxy S, Wave, the Droid Incredible.

My impression so far has been - yes the contrast improvement is noticeable at high brightness levels BUT no cellphone user leaves their phone at those brightness levels because they are battery-killing. Yes theoretically OLED is more battery efficient than TFT but in practice Samsung has not made an OLED that lives up to that promise - there are all sorts of practical considerations about the types of material used, burn-in, and touch screens.

So it may be like the original PSP where the highest brightness levels are great for when you are plugged in, but you also get a good level of brightness when you are on battery power, that they measure battery ratings at.

I wonder what Steve Jobs thinks of the NGP.

In all honesty, this thing will probably help Apple more than hurt Apple.

It's nearly the same architecture as the iPhone 5-?. It's pretty much known that Apple has decided to adopt the multicore Arm 9 and the a multicore 43.

Apple has a *much* larger net than Sony. The iPod/iPhone/iPad is really looked as general purpose devices that can also do gaming. While they may not the best thing for gaming due to the lack of physical control options; this has not stopped developers from tweaking their pre-existing games, and has not stopped customers from buying them on the cheap.

The NGP will increase developers ability to port games back and forth between iOS and NGP.

This can only help Apple.

This is why I like Sony. Rather than just focusing on one primary feature for the system, the basically put it all together in one package, which will result in a much greater variety of software.

At 300$ I'll bite.

I wonder how this will affect production costs over time. The fact that there are millions upon millions of devices using this same exact architecture has got to reduce costs quickly.

Don´t worry about battery life, guys.

1) OLED screen is more energy efficient than LCD when showing dark colours.

2) GAF decided that PSP2 (sorry, NGP) will only get "next-gen" console ports, which are all, as we all know, made from very energy efficient hues of brown and grey.

3 ???

4) PROFIT!

Give me MGAc!!!d with super bright colours D:

I think they should expand "Near" by letting you game share certain games with those around you. PSP could do this if i remember.

It did?

I know the DS had some ability like that.

yes, it will which is why i dont think it will be as expensive as a lot people seem to think. even if sony's profit margin is very small at the NGP's launch, it should increase relatively quickly.

Early on it did, I don't think they bothered adding it to later games.

Street Fighter 3DS is confirmed to do let you play a Ryu vs. Ryu match or something. The transferred game can then be played against other users without any cart at all.

PSP had it as well. Almost no games used it, but it was the same as on the DS: download part of the game and play a limited multiplayer mode with the host.

This is amazing. Looks sexy and powerful. I really enjoyed that Near demo, especially the "most played games" in each city tab, very useful stuff.

I can see NGP extending the PS3's lifecycle as well, especially through PSN. The ease to port a PS3 game surely means more HD Classics too. Hopefully that rumor about a HD Peace Walker port is true.

OMG HYPE HYPE GIVE IT TO ME NOW SONY

Oh yeah, didn't it use the infrared or something?

On DS it's just wireless, I don't really understand the point of the 3DS infrared unless their next console uses it as a Move-like positional marker. (And I'm not throwing that in as a silly suggestion, it's the most likely one I can think of)

I was wondering about the Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Volume 2 Trailer.

I really hope it's for NGP. I don't think they will make another KH game for the old PSP.

I'm not sure I can pass on such an awesome looking piece of tech. Buying 3DS day 1 and will probably buy this too. Fuck my wallet. I just hope it does better than the first PSP and there will be a lot of original games and not a ton of console ports.

On a different note, big question I have is - Playstation Suite is meant to be this big cross platform push. So...will that extend to PS3? Or just mobile?

Jack Tretton confirms this in this interview: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/engadget-interview-sceas-jack-tretton-talks-sony-ngp-announce/

For a brief moment, Tretton "confirmed" that PlayStation Suite games (currently slated for Android devices) would work on PlayStation 3. We asked rather directly, to which he responded, "Yes, they will. Yeah." By the next question, however, he explained that he might've misspoken and wanted to clarify that Suite is only NGP right now.

At least... that's enough confirmation for me.

Am I just not seeing EA on that list?

Based on very quick Google searches from japanese sites, it seems SCE is responsible for it. Not 100% sure though.

Thanks, that's more info than I could find. It looks a lot like a Grasshopper production and I notice now that they're on Sony's developer list. I wonder if GM is making it and Sony's publishing? Either way it looks like something I'd want to check out.

I don't get why there's a touch pad on the back. The 3G is interesting though, I really wish Nintendo had included this feature on the 3DS (although it might come later). It will be successful as the PSP was, but I don't see it as innovative enough to overtake the 3DS. I was really hoping they would have some "wow" feature that would make it a possibility, but this upgrade is pretty predictable.

I gotta say that I really love the design of this thing, this picture basically illustrates why I dig it so much. Love the way they removed all the unnecessary text that was on the bottom of the original PSP. It just adds to the sleekness.

I seriously can not wait for this system to come out... I love madden and NCAA on the 360 and PS3, but on the PSP... it just was pretty bad.

If Sony gets this out before the end of the year, madden and CoD are launch games, and they confirm that there are some JPRGS coming (FF PS2 collections pleaseeeee. Or maybe even a 13-2 port?) I will pay upwards to $450 for it.

Im already saving up for it on amazon. Have $250 worth of gift cards on there after paying off my 3ds.

Does the D-Pad on the NGP look a little funky to anyone else?

yes jack treton confirmed to engadget that

PS Suite will have non-gaming apps.

btw i have a question about 3G, i have this iphone plan with tmobile here in holland and it gives me unlimited internet acces and no download limit, like literally iv downloaded more than 5gb's a month sometimes of apps and videos and i never go over my monthly fee.
I used that in my ipad but my question is, if this psp2 will have a sim holder, wont i just have the option to put my sim in like the ipad and have it work.
