PSSR 2.0 System Wide Toggle Is a Masterstroke For Pro Owners

I'm on the beta software update, I have the latest one installed, but I don't have the toggle under Screen & Video on my PS5 Pro 😕

is it just that I'm not in the wave yet for the OS update?

I manually had to go to update in the system settings and manually check for update which it found, it never got pushed through to mine either.

I tried that with no luck, so I figured I'd go back to the regular system software and download the beta anew but now I can't get the beta anymore 😞

This is how it should've been launched.

Current it does look cool but too bad PS6 is closer.

Make sense to get that directly. Or next gen Series S.
Yes pay more money for a PS6 for same performance lol.. You realise unless PS6 has some separate more advanced AI integration, devs aren't going to squeeze better out of the PS6 for at least 2-3 years. I highly doubt you going to notice much difference. People should by a Pro now and enjoy it, especially if interested in GTA 6.

And next gen Series S, one of the most unnecessary consoles ever made.. You think that would be better than Pro? No idea what you're smoking.

This is insane dude 😂

You should recheck what you posted.

PS6 is being mentioned to have path tracing capabilities.

You have to leave the beta and install the latest software update manually. You'll then find the toggle in the video section under settings.

Note: this is assuming that the system override will work the same as it does on PC with something like DLSS override. If there are differences, hopefully Sony will share that in the future.

So the PSSR 2.0 Firmware update is out now and for many folks (including myself) the initial impressions are overwhelming positive! Free system update dramatically improving many games for free and zero effort for the user. However, I think it's worth emphasizing a point about this update that seems to be flying under the radar for some.

By enabling a system wide toggle for "enhanced PSSR quality" it means that ANY and ALL future updates to the PSSR model/algorithm can now be provided to PS5 PRO gamers fast, easy, and WITHOUT dedicated patches from devs. So all of these games will continually improve over time as the machine learning model gets more advanced. For example imagine playing your GT7 or Crimson Desert in 6 months and noticing that it looks and runs even better than it does today. May require a system update to update drivers and such but pretty much zero effort for the user. Just leave the toggle On and it should sync to the latest and greatest model that Sony has. If you think these games look much better today, wait to see how it improves even further over the next year or so.

It was said at one point from "insiders" that the new PSSR would require complete reimplementation from devs to use new APIs and such which would have required more work from devs and dedicated patches (meaning slower and more limited support). So glad that turned out to not be the case and Sony was able to deploy this at the system level for seamless updates. THAT is the power of machine learning and pretty much unprecedented in the console space. Absolute Masterstroke from them on increasing the value of the PRO over time!!

I'm happy but seriously speaking with an upscaler based on AI it's the minimal put a toggle forced option setting otherwise you are completely fool and idiot, especially with such priced hardware. There is nothing to be particularly phenomenal about this move, it's a regular job we should be mandatory.

'Mentioned' path tracing abilities, you really think from day 1 launch, there is going to be all these path tracing games? I'm talking about the first 2 or 3 years of the lifecycle not being much different.

I'm just saying buying a Pro now and then waiting for when PS6 actually has some next gen games is better than sticking with OG PS5 until PS6 launch.

The PS6 will run circles around the PS5/pro.

This is not like going from PS4 to PS5 where the rendering focus was still primarily based on raster with some sprinkles of RT here and there.

The PS6 is being built from the ground up to be an RT powerhouse. And you need to understand that basing the majority of your games on RT or PT actually gives you less work to do. And have you looked around you recently? Pretty much every cross-platform game being made now has an RT mode.

And all this is befoire we even start talking about the PS6's AI hardware which will make it perfectly suited for not just upscaling, but also for things like FG and neural illumination, which is as good as baking in RT global illumination into the hardware.

The PS6 is so easily leaps and bounds above the PS5 (all down to new GPU tech design direction and not just raster performance), that it actually makes comparisons boring.

Oh... and the PS6 will likely never have "next gen games"...in the sense that probably for all of the PS6s life, 90% 0 100% of all its games will also be on the PS5. Dont forget that the lowest entry high end consoles will be handhelds, that are going to be less powerful than the base PS5.. albeit with build in Ai hardware.

Are you going based off of leaked specs or just assuming?

Leaked specs, sonys and AMDs tech video, and common sense.

  • PS6 is based on RDNA5, and as per their amerthyst video, neural arrays, radiance cores, and compression were emphasized. Thats aka decoupled and more advanced dedicated Ai cores, More specialized RT cores, estimated to be about 12x that of PS5 RT, and more compression stuff, which just means they wouldn't need as much RAM/bandwidth. Those neural arrays don't just make for better PSSR, they also make neural illumination possible, basically doing for RT what PSSR does for upscaling.
  • And thats before even taking into account the 40TF of raster performance, but more so, the fact that they will likely never use that performance to drive anything primarily at native 4K. All devs will probably focus on running their games at 1080p-1440p with RT and using PSSR to drive it to 4k@60fps because every box is shipping with dedicated Ai hardware. It would be flat-out stupid not to use it.
  • And Sony has been cooking this stuff for a while, they filed around 3 patents specifically tied to RT as far back as 2021... and things that were talked about in those patents ultimately showed up with what they were talking about in the Amerthyst video... just with different names.
  • And the common sense part? RE9 was released day and date on the Switch 2. A 3TF handheld. So if a handheld launches with the PS6, its likelu going to be a 4-5TF handheld and maybe more when docked... tahts even less raw raster power than whats in the PS5, but it would likely have RT better than the PS5 and Ai hardware too... long story short.. everything that would be released for the PS6 will likely make its way as far down as the switch... and everthing in between.

Games already gearing for it - we see increased number of PT games - RE9, Tides of Annihilation etc. those probably will have version for PS6 as well

That was good insight and hope you are right.

Metal Gear Solid 3 looks great on PSSR2, but the game still suffers from frame rate drops at certain points.

In the end, I opted for graphics mode rather than performance mode because the frame rate drops appear in both modes, but it looks fantastic in graphics mode.

For me the question is when ps6 will launch, cause for me knowing this i could do the Pro upgrade

Graphically there isn't anyway an huge difference. There is a more pronounced use of Hardware Lumen in the LoD in medium/long distances especially on the trees but I mean you really have to look side by side to notice it.
