PSU's COD4 Preview - "difference on platforms will be minimal"

Preview from PSU.

Nothing new, but it helps my worries about 360 and PS3 discrepencies. :)

We already know what minimal means when talking about 360/PS3 games : aliasing, 30 fps, no more motion blur and slowdowns on PS3 version of the game. Oh, and Sixasix support gimmick, of course.

I'm giving a lot of credit to Infinity Ward.
Hopefully, my faith is not is not misplaced..

Infinity Ward already stated that CoD4 is proper programed for the PS3 and not just a 360 port and that it will run at 60fps.

Just because Starbreeze sucks at game porting doesn't mean the PS3 will always gets the shaft. IW will do the game justice.

This is an honest question: Why did you buy a PS3 and not a 360 if you knew this to be the case?

Or maybe I'm missing sarcasm, but I doubt it. The things you list often are problems with PS3 versions, and it'd be weird to be sarcastic about the truth.

Snide. I've had to open my english dictionary to actually understand what you meant.

The problem is that the definition of "snide" is as unclear as the word itself :

"Derogatory or mocking in an indirect way"

Now I have have to find what derogatory and mocking mean.

:lol

Because there are much more exclusive PS3 games that interests me than on 360. Don't get me wrong : I'm the first one feeling sad by the treatment offered by third party editors to PS3 ports. But I still actually find it very funny when I hear them pretend there will be only minimal differences : history has proven that minimal means...

The very fact there will be differences should scare PS3 owners.

It should scare PS3 owners if we were in year 3 or 4 of the PS3's life. At this stage of the game, I'll be happy if it's on par seeing how the lead dev platforms have been Xbox 360s.

I want the PS3 version just for the fact that I get to play online for free. No XBL Gold for me when the game is released. I do have it now though! 3 months free! Yeah!

I really thought PSU was banned because of this.

I thought it was highly suggested. Although, they did offer an some-what official apology?

I just hope the only differences graphics-wise are the "on-screen buttons" (ie it says "press O to throw grenade" on screen vs "press B to throw grenade").

Infinity Ward is one of my favorite third-party developers, their one of the few that pay a lot of attention to detail, and really care about making the best game they can.

Infinity Ward FTW!

Good, now i dont have to worry about what version im getting, i really look forward to buying my first Call of Duty game!

Where exactly was it confirmed ? I can't find anything on the page you linked. And it seems to me that the 360 is the main focus since there is a public multiplayer beta for that platform and nothing for the PS3.
Well, the devs explicitly say it's the PS3 version on the page, and the control prompts are also clearly sixaxis. I'm not sure what you mean unless you think they're flat out lying about it.

Promising.

The only real differences will be the lack of rumble and six-axis control for the PlayStation 3 controller. The guys at Infinity Ward preferred the 360 controller for shooters, but said that the PlayStation 3 controller was easier to target enemies with, which gave it a slight edge for multiplayer.

For being in Beta build, the game is looking fantastic, and very complete. This title is almost certainly going to be a must have for all consoles, and is set to release this November.

So you have both consoles but 13 cents/day is too much? :D Xbox live just feels more robust. Since it's Infiinty Ward I think they'll do a good job on the PS3 port, but it won't change the fact that the 360 version will likely be the better of the two. Plus the controller is way more suited for FPS games.

I just can't find where they say it is the PS3 version...but I've seen the D-Pad of the Sixasix on the video, so it pretty confirms what you say. Not the most impressive video of the game, to say the least, but at least, we know they are working on the PS3 version.

Minimal with the exception of the exclusive beta.

Hooray, an exclusive beta.

Really, that was very strange to announce at the E3 MS conference...now, an exclusive demo is something that's worth chiming about, but an exclusive beta?

Then again the Warhawk beta was a blast despite the glitches, so I dunno.

Well I'd hope so.

There also was the Sony press conference video that has shown the PS3 version. In fact it was the same level (middle eastern town) that was shwon for the 360 at E3.

ehh... is the Wii version included in that promise?

If they're graphically equivalent I'll probably get it on PS3. I like the 360 controller a lot better but I'd rather play the game on dedicated servers.

Great. I'll dig for it.

Yeah, it's in that E3 Sizzle video in the PS Store. I'm not sure if it's compression or a genuine downgrade, but there were a bunch of jaggies on things like light poles and fences in the distance that weren't in the video of the same area on 360 hardware.

I thought dedicated servers were only for Sony 1st party.

Proly having problems with AA. I suppose the video is only available on the US store, since I've not seen it on the European one. Time to log my US account, it seems...

Well, sure it's free, but how many players will be there online compared to the 360 scenario? All of my gaming friends have both systems, and they end up buying 360 versions of all the multiplatform games because a) the do look/play better or b), if differences are "minimal", there is still that little thing called GamerScore they want to feed (this is a huge hook for them, clearly the best feature Microsoft could have come up with this gen. But this is beyond the point). So unless PS3 versions of multiplaforms, online-centric games are at least IDENTICAL to the 360 ones, they will keep buying the latters. Which "forces" me to do that as well in order to play with them online.

Wollan said:
Yeah it seemed identical but it seemed to have slightly more jaggies for whatever reason.

I don't really remeber seeing that but who knows what the final version will look like. Infinity Ward is one of the few developers I have faith in.

Hopefully by this fall the PS3 will also have its trophies (and cross game invites).

Yep. That could counter the GamerScore thing effectively if done right. I personally hope so as I see the trophy system as a more "meaningful" reward/showcase for your game accomplishments compared to a simple text. Good thing the Trophy Rooms will be accessible even when the respective "owners" are offline (was fraid it was going to be a by-invitation only thing). But Sony also needs to allow users to put them (not all of them, just some would be ok) into their private spaces (apartments) for people to come in, see that 1:1 Helghast soldier standing in the corner near the sofa and start thinking about getting one themselves.

Oops, going OT.

No mouse/keyboard?

Probably not, although you need to wonder why, though. It's not like it requires a lot of extra coding to support a keyboard or mouse and any concerns over competitive advantages can easily be solved with bifurcating the online play to match the control scheme.

There is a point system coming to PS3 games besides Home Trophies and Home clothing/furniture. Phil said it was a point system but that it was different. Forum speculation is that it might actually be consumable Home 'credit'.

Aww shit, I forgot you have to sign up to see that stuff:

This week we're introducing a new type of perk. Previously showcased perks focused around Special Abilities such as Increased Bullet Penetration with Deep Impact, Increased Rate of Fire with Double Tap, or Increased Reload Times with Slight of Hand. There is another category of perks that focuses less on these Special Abilities and more on Special Weapons.

Special Weapons include things such as C4, RPGs, extra grenades, etc. The first Special Weapons perk we're going to showcase is C4. C4 doesn't need a ton of explanation - it's a perfect perk for objective game types such as Search and Destroy where you can set traps for your enemy, and for faster paced games like Free For All (Deathmatch) where you can lead your target towards you and blow them up with well placed C4.

To show off the perk in-game, we decided to load up a Free For All (Deathmatch) and Team Deathmatch game on the Playstation 3 and just blow the hell out of the level. Keep in mind, the actual perk only gives you 2 C4 per spawn, so you have to choose your usage of them wisely. C4 is great for setting traps, especially since vehicles are fully destructible in multiplayer. As you can see in the first part of the video, we planted some C4 on a car, lured the enemy up to it to take cover and sent them flying. The rest of the video is a montage of death showcasing the many ways to take out enemies using C4. We go from planting it on the run, to planning an attack, to catching our enemies off guard by throwing C4 over the wall in the direction they’re heading. Watch out for the little blooper reel at the end that I like to call, "When C4 Collides."
