PSX on PSN - I've never owned a Playstation, recommend me software!

So I finally picked up the last piece of the puzzle that is connecting a PSP Go to a TV last night, a Dualshock 3. I had purchased the component cable a few months ago and have had the dock for almost a year now, but better late than never I suppose.

Considering PSP games themselves run in a thumbnail-sized screen, I suppose this'll be used largely for PSX titles. I've never owned a Playstation console before; PSX, PS2, or PS3, so I've played little to none of what's on PSN in terms of Playstation software, so where do I start?

I already own Crash 1-3, Rayman 2, and Jet Moto.

Intelligent Cube holds up better than anything else.

FF7/8/9 are all great. If you're in the US, I recommend Parasite Eve 1.

EDIT: It's actually Intelligent Qube, and Kurushi if you're in Europe.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Castlevania Chronicles
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Silent Hill
Jumping Flash! 2
R-Type Delta
Rayman
Twisted Metal 2

Driver
Crash Team Racing
Metal Gear Solid
Ridge Racer Type 4
Final Fantasy (all of them PS1 ones, the SNES ports are usually not worth getting if you can play the original versions)
Vagrant Story
Rayman 1
The Adventures of Alundra

Symphony of the Night holds up better than most PSX games most likely. I have not played them in a while but Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3 are probably still stellar. Most of the stuff in this thread is pretty good too.

Dragon Warrior VII is a must, as is MGS and all Final Fantasy's. Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, and Einhander are also excellent. Brave Fencer Musashi and Xenogears were amazing. So was Street Fighter Alpha 3. Persona and Castlevania: SOTN were classics too.

Wow, how did you miss out on one of the best software libraries of all time?

Hoo boy, so many folks not reading the OP.

Was a N64 + PC gamer from '96 - '00. Switched over to Dreamcast + PC Gamer from '00 - '04.

Ah, thank goodness you experienced the Dreamcast.

I've only bought FFVII and MGS so far, but I'm thinking of picking up FFVIII (as my discs don't work for some reason), Xenogears and possibly Um Jammer Lammy, mainly for that boss final song where Parappa comes in.

What games do you like? Get ones like those.

Ah, thank goodness you experienced the Dreamcast.

I grew up a Nintendo kid; received a NES in '89 at the age of four, and actually played my NES well into '93, when I kinda switched over to PC games for a bit. Then when the N64 dropped I was into that mostly while being supplemented by PC games. I had nothing personal against the PSX, I was just satisfied with what games I had so I had no need to look elsewhere.

I bought a Dreamcast at Christmas 2000 due to the impending release of PSO and the $149 price tag; ended up playing and buying new games for the thing throughout 2003 along with my GBA, and PC.

2005 is when I gave up on PC gaming as I bought a Mac in 2003 and just didn't feel like updating my PC hardware anymore, so I moved over to the DS and PSP until I ended up buying a Wii in late 2007 and a 360 in late 2008.

And here we are.

But this isn't my gaming retrospective thread, so I dunno what I'm babbling on about...I need to get some sleep.

Don't get the SNES FF's or Chrono Trigger, you have a Wii, so you can play the better versions.

Plus I actually have the DS version of CT and the GBA version of IV (with a possible version of DSIV in the future)

Wanted the GBA version of VI but I was too late in grabbing it while it was widely available.

I got:

Resident Evil 2
Soul Reaver
Blood Omen
Castlevania Symphony Of The Night

I didn't get Metal Gear Solid cause I already own Twin Snakes, but that's probably worth picking up too.

Silent Hill is also very good, but I own the actual disc.

Metal Gear Solid 1, dude. One of the all-time greats, and it holds up very well for a PSX title.

Get Dark Forces if you're a Star Wars fan. It's dated, but playable.

What genres are you into?

No Suikoden mentioned? I'm disappointed gaf, no wonder Konami ditched suikoden
...you stole my post. :P

But it depends on how far OP wants to go with with the RPG genre. Genso Suikoden was released in 1995, and whenever I recommend it to people, some people like it and some people don't. The people who did not like it thought it was rather archaic, and I can easily see why. I really love Genso Suikoden I (and its soundtrack), but I'll admit that Genso Suikoden II improves on all of the game's mechanics dramatically. I like to think of both games as sister games, really.

So OP, if you want to give Suikoden a chance, go for it. Otherwise...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy IX
Soul Reaver
Arc the Lad I and II
Alundra
Legend of Mana
Wild Arms
Grandia
Rayman
Metal Gear Solid
Parasite Eve
...and Suikoden if you're willing to try it out.

Would have bought it day one had I known

And OP, you want Alundra and Grandia, as has been mentioned!
Ummm, my mistake, it's out in Japan and Europe, not in the US it seems.

Anything else?

If votes are being tallied:

* Final Fantasy VIII
* SotN
* Vagrant Story

If your Japanese is up to the task, add:

* Tales of Phantasia (PSX Remake)

Put me down to add to the tally for:

Castlevania: SotN
FFIX
Xenogears - Read about it, look into it, know about the faults and the length (along with the lengthy cut-scenes and plot exposition) and see if it's for you.
Legend of Mana - A different kind of action RPG, not super huge on the story, but some pretty unique mechanics that can make multiple playthrus quite different.

So the first two are a total definite in my opinion, and I strongly suggest you read up on the second two to see if they're within the realm of something that might interest you.
