Psychonauts 2 delayed to 2020

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Double Fine Productions has delayed Psychonauts 2 to 2020 from its previously planned 2019 release window, the studio announced in the game's latest Fig backer update.

The developer confirmed the delay in addressing the E3 2019 announcement that it has been acquired by Microsoft:
As you just saw, E3 kicked off with us sneaking into the Microsoft press briefing to adorn Phil Spencer in a Psychonauts shirt. We then snuck past Keanu to announce that we would be joining Xbox Game Studios, and that Psychonauts 2 would be published by Microsoft (instead of Starbreeze) as a first-party title. Now, before anyone panics! We have confirmed that we will be able to honor Psychonauts 2 for every platform that we have already promised here, and that includes bringing the game to PlayStation 4!
There really shouldn't be too many other noticeable changes for you at all, at least not for a while…with one notable exception: We're now targeting next year for release. We know it's always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who—just like us—want the game to be as good as possible. So we're hopeful you'll understand!
Psychonauts 2 will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

You can't create a "first party title" and make it available as a multiplatform game... can you? This has never been done before, to my knowledge (I don't count PC as "losing exclusivity" like some others do, personally).

MS' deep pockets probably gave them the development time they'll need to polish the game further.

Does minecraft count? Iirc MS had acquisitioned the series prior to the wii u and current gen ports.

Not as much because it was already released but TBF I'd have to say yes but other than that... this has pretty much never happened.

Probably for the best.

Even if the could get it ready for this fall there's an onslaught of major release staring in September and a niche title like this would likely get lost in the shuffle. Better to delay it, get it ready and polished and put it out in a less crowded month.

Sega games mostly when once the Dreamcast died and Sega dropped out of the console race.

For a bit, Psygnosis (after being bought by Sony in the 90s) still made Saturn games. But after a few games multiplat games stopped.

Depends on the contracts, We Happy Few and Outer Worlds studios are now MS 1st party, but they both are also on Playstation...

The contract for PS is still valid in regards to Psychonauts 2, but if theres a 3 (God willing) it will be a Box exclusive.

Good. Psychonauts is one of my favourite games of all time.
Take your time, do things right.

Imagine it's something to do with them buying DF during development of a game. Psychonauts 3 on the other hand...

Phil Margera's looking well.

Tim Schafer unequivocally looks better than Bam Margera in 2019. What world are we living in?

This game coming also on PS4 even though they are bought by MS? Just a question, I obviously don't want that something which was multipltform became exlusive game.

(I am still fucking salty, about that Control DLC, fucking Sony : D )

I think so. The games from the other new Xbox studios that were originally meant to be multi-plat like The Outer Worlds still released on those platforms and I believe Wasteland 3 is also going to be on the PS4, so this one probably will too.

I refused to buy the game because of this. I will absolutely play it if it comes to GP though.

Yeah, they already said that even if it's not a full release, there will be PS4 copies for at least the people who backed for it. It was on the DoubleFine forums for a few days before being deleted, but some of the dev team also stated that if it's not a full release, just a one time limited print just for PS4 backers, we'd likely get no patch support in the event the game is bugged. It was a pretty obvious attempt to get people to support the Microsoft move.

Personally, I'd take a Steam copy if that's all I could get.

Still excited for this drop would be awesome if they just released it PC gamepass I was a fig backer when it first dropped.

The issue is that Control is by far the best game this game in my opinion. It's well worth the price.

- Psychonauts
- Abe's Odyssey
- Beyond Good and Evil
- Perfect Dark

I always see a lot of gamer support on forums for these games. Where's the sequels? Day one buy! Do it!

Can't wait to see sales of any sequels.

I have no doubt it is and it would have been day 1 for me, but I refuse to buy it on principal. Sony's moneyhatting was scummy as was Remedy taking Sonybux to keep content away from their Xbox players. Won't contribute to that.

If only people had been this principled between 2006 and 2012. Back then, refusing to contribute to scummy moneyhatting would have mattered more.

So, from that list:
-Psychonauts has a direct sequel already, called Rhombus of Ruin.
-Abe's Odyssey has two direct sequels, a spin-off, a remake and one more in the oven I believe.
-Perfect Dark had two direct sequels.

So aside from Beyond Good and No One Cares, go nuts.
