Psy's Gangnam Style Music Video

Many probably have refreshed hundreds of times.

Likes is a much easier to see how many people have seen it; of course only a small percentage of people actually like a video, but it's still probably a couple hundreds of millions of people.
You don't seem to know how Youtube's view counter works.

It only counts separate machines. It does not count the same machine more than once no matter how often you refresh it.

That is not what that article is saying at all. Really have no idea how it would give you that notion. If that were true "Baby" couldn't possibly have that many views. Yes, if you just sit on the page and hit refresh over and over, it probably will filter out those views, but...:

... they will only say a view is counted whenever someone watches a video on YouTube and claim they “do not get more specific than this to avoid attempts at artificially inflating view counts” – the company is not shy about discussing the technology in more obscure terms.

Youtube counts multiple views from the same machines. It just has a lot of technology behind it to determine fraudulent view activity.

Also from my research, I’ve come across a little hitch in the incrementing logic that says somewhere around 300 views (some people say at 308 views), YouTube freezes your view count while it starts sniffing around for view fraud. Obviously, since video view count is such a huge part of the ranking algorithm on YouTube, they are sensitive to people inflating their views. This can happen in a number of ways, but they basically want to comb through cookies and IP addresses to make sure that the video views up to and past this point are valid. I guess it’s possible 308 is some sort of a point of inflection that determines whether a video is actually popular, according to their math.

http://www.snaphow.com/4505/youtube-video-view-count-stuck-frozen-after-300-views

From the Official Explanation :
YouTube has sophisticated technology to count views consistently. If this algorithms detects that there has been an attempt to inflate a video’s view count artificially, that video’s view count will be frozen. During the time in which the view count appears frozen, valid views will continue to be counted.

But as soon as you cross 300 views, YouTube’s internal counting system takes a more careful look at what they call "unique" views. This means that to count a view as a valid "youtube video view", that video should be viewed from a different PC (unique IP addresses). Hence, this way one can correctly know which is the most popular, most viewed youtube video.

Also, you must note that the counting process after 300 youtube video views is not instant. The process of counting the new "unique views" takes from few hours to even few days. So that might be another reason for your youtube video view count not increasing.

So, the main thing to note is that, after 300 video views… you must get unique visits on your youtube video to make it count as a view. So, if you’ve got few subscribers and a video that has a lot of video views from repeat visits/your own visits, it might take some time to see an update in that youtube video’s view count.

In other words, before that 300-ish view count, they do count the same machine more than once. After that, however, it must ALL be unique views. Of course, it's not fool-proof - there may be instances where they count the same machine more than once - but they make a big point of being as accurate as possible considering all the different things view count affects (from the popularity lists to advertising revenue).

I dunno, The first article doesn't suggest that either and the second article seems to be surmising that from the vague youtube policy statement.

How do they not...?

Okay, look. If they regularly count a machine more than once, or if they even halfway regularly count a machine more than once, that amounts to view count fraud. It throws the whole metric out of whack. If you have no certainty as to how many people actually viewed those videos, you wouldn't even be able to put a price on it, because you have no certainty.

Remember, these are just the number of people who hit play on the video and watched it for more than 5 seconds. It doesn't mean that 800m unique machines actually viewed it from beginning to end, that's just the number of machines that hit the play button. Viewed from that light, it should make a whole lot more sense.

There are a lot of internet users out there. 1/3 of the internet viewing population seeing a single video seems feasible to me. Remember, they're the most popular videos of all time. If this was a regular occurrence I would certainly agree that something is fishy about the view counter.

Then why in the youtube stats dashboard can you break out unique views? :P

Youtube's own faq says they count all views, save for ones they deem illigitimate. (Also "internet viewing population" != equal unique machines.)

Pfffft, it was the Bush administration. We've all said some angry things during the Bush administration.

About slowly and surely murdering people and their families?

And from foreigners who then later tried to come into the country and sell records?

Maybe something is added in the translation? Korean speakers... Anyone?

Anyway I would remind Psy that you never go full retard.

Korea is known to have these netizens who (I don't know how) manipulate these views and voting things. They particularly ruin Korean celebrities' lives if they don't like them as well. Its kinda funny actually.

Like when they had Rain win Time's most influential person award. TWICE. Who really gives a shit about Rain?

This is great though.

I just checked.

I stand corrected.

Now I'm wondering why they show that and not the unique view counter considering they already have that.

My whole Youtube-viewing life has been a lie!

Edit: Waaaait a minute. I think see what's going on here.

The stats dashboard gives you an option to see unique cookies. Now, I don't know exactly how Youtube tracks these, but it may be that it assigns cookies only to accounts and not to actual machines, hence the distinction between what it normally counts for views (which is any ol' machine, including those not logged in) and "unique cookies".

Orrr I could be reaching. I dnno. Just a thought.

Yeah, that falls under "some pretty angry things." I wanted the southern states to sink into the ocean.

Also what are wrong with foreigners?

I'm happy this guy's 15 minutes will soon be up. And as with all fads, anyone who enjoyed PSY will be filled with shame ~5-10 years from now.

I'm at a bar/club in Boracay, Philippines and the dj played Gangnam style and everyone lost their goddamn minds. Patrons, bartenders, bouncers, the security guards, everyone just started going apeshit. This "fad" is going nowhere soon.

Same at a bar in central Illinois this past weekend. I expect this video to get a lot of new views as people get new tablets, laptops, and phones this Christmas... Surely, 1 billion will happen before 2013.

Holy shit, we are in celebrating our Christmas Party and the Managers and Exec of our company remade the Gangnam Style Video.

Fucking awesome and funny seeing those respected exec do the dance.

Anyone know if the video will hit 1 billion views before the end of the year?

That'd be pretty amazing, I don't think any other youtube video has managed to get that many views in a year.
