See now you are going off the deep end. The 2018 world cup is being in held in Russia, which has lately been in the news for making some really progressives legislations for its citizens /s. But where is the outrage ?
A lot of shit is wrong in a lot of countries, but this isn't about that, this is about sports period and has nothing to do with the political/moral stands of another country. I mean, remember the Olympics in China ? Those chinese got freedom over their man. But it all went through because international relations pertain that you keep the two seperate, it used to happen back in the cold war when the world was divided but not since.
The exception here are the slave labour issues which are a real concern. Because the workers are being put explicitly in bad conditions because of the world cup and not qatar's domestic policies. You can go ahead and deny it but the majority of people are not mad because of slave labour or corruption in FIFA, but because they are pissed that the other nations which were competing for the 2022 slot didn't win.
Also, your ramblings about religion sounds like it's straight off of reddit, seriously where did that even come from ?? Qatar/UAE are considered among the more progressive countries in the gulf, which is not saying much but please keep this bullshit for another middle-east-is-fuckedup thread, we get plenty of those every week.
Uhuh, you haven't asked my opinion on that matter. This thread is specifically about Qatar, you can search through my post history but I am very critical of Russia getting to host too. Similar issues, although Russia actually plays football, has stadiums, fans and won't physically kill you for playing it unless you go in winter. Although heated pitches are common place. Russia has major issues, football ones are the lesser problem. Qatar is just full batshit crazy. I think both bids were corrupt as fuck and involved major bribes, Russia's computer meltdown before investigations were such an unfortunate accident.
Qatar's bid had nothing going for it, trying to spin it as if other countries having problems means they are a valid bid is the same as doing it for north korea. Where is the line drawn? There is so much wrong it is hard to know where to start. The bidding process itself at the time of voting was invalidated as they were directed to go with newcomers.
You speak as if there can only be one valid problem, not multiples. There was nothing right about their bid, you can break it down however you want. Every step was a crock of shite, and whether people are more concerned over one problem does not mean it is the exclusive one they consider.
Because they imprison people for dissent, not even open dissent. And religion is a major factor in their laws to say the least so another relevant point. I as a football fan would be open to execution for going there to support my team because of a lack of religion. Unlikely I would be perhaps but why am I in that potential position. The rhetoric over reddit is an ad hominem, in keeping with your other standards of debate. Haha, I love how stating facts about their laws and beliefs is me attacking them. Well duh, but I didn't get that far. They aren't positions that can be defended. You admit in forming your sentence that even as a lenient middle east country, their laws and thinking are fucked while at the same time acting like they are victims. A gay man or woman, apostates etc. should be able to follow their team without fear of persecution. Yes or no? The rest of it I also agree with such as weather, country size, standards, historical football association, bid corruption, bribes, that the bid was for summer and competition lined up and argued as such... and on and on. Actually instead of having to respond to your silly position of defending the indefensible, how about you put forward points for hosting it there. Genuinely curious what you can come up with.
